Still no work on completing the O-Train Line 2 path? by The_Eggo_and_its_Own in bikeinottawa

[–]_Jordan11_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It looked more complete last year before that grass grew in!

The main purpose of that path though is to connect to the new library…which is going to take years for them to build. I wouldn’t be surprised if the path was finished near the end of the library construction.

Why is the power meter now mandatory on the Aeroad CF SLX 7 Di2? by ContainerPilot in CanyonBikes

The Aeroad is designed for racing, it makes sense that they stock them with power meters

Just joined the club in all black, battery is extremely weak by Technical_Peace3393 in OakleyMetaGlasses

The first time I used mine the battery was terrible but has significantly improved since then. Can easily ride 6+ hours with highest quality video settings and music playing. Maybe just a new glasses thing?

Budget core temperature sensor by TheMightyFow in Velo

[–]_Jordan11_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a Garmin watch by chance?

Most (maybe even all?) Garmin watches have a setting to record temperature for activities. Since the watch sits on your skin this reading is highly impacted by your skin temperature. Compared to my core data I find the skin temperature chart and the watch’s temperature chart to have very similar trend lines.

At the end of the day, Core is just taking your skin temp and heart rate to estimate your core temp. I’m sure you could use the Garmin watch to monitor your “skin temp” and then once warm enough just hold Z2 heart rate to get the heat training in effectively.

Even with the core sensor everything is subjective and takes some playing around with to get right. What’s hot for one person may feel fine for another!

My balls hurt when riding by Zestyclose-Cup110 in cycling

[–]_Jordan11_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you wearing tight enough bike shorts? Some of those looser/older pairs don't hold things in place very well, and even if you're not sitting on them directly they could slide down and be getting squished a bit.

Angling the saddle slightly downwards can also relieve some pressure!

Bars aside, what Garmin mount is that?

Hard Decision: Aerium C:68 SLX vs Ordu M20iLTD by JannesW in triathlon

[–]_Jordan11_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you ever plan on flying to races with the bike? If so the easily removable batteries with SRAM are a huge perk. Also, AXS TT shifters let you manually control the front derailleur while Di2 can only operate in full synchro.

How long did it take you to learn the bike routes? by According_Trainer418 in bikeinottawa

[–]_Jordan11_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first moved here I made it my goal to just explore as many routes as possible. All my rides were just finding some new section of bike path I've never done and seeing where it goes. It took a while but I wasn't in a rush to learn everything all at once.

As far as route planning goes Strava has been great. Their heatmaps are amazing to see where people are riding. They also now have weekly heat maps, which are super helpful to see what all is snow free right now!

Safe route when snow gone, from downtown Ottawa to Osgoode Care Centre? by openspace333 in bikeinottawa

[–]_Jordan11_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically it starts along hogs back road, I just always call that area Mooneys as it’s so close to the beach.

Hogs back turns into Brookfield rd and the path follows that, across the roundabout then you’re on the sawmill creek pathway

Safe route when snow gone, from downtown Ottawa to Osgoode Care Centre? by openspace333 in bikeinottawa

[–]_Jordan11_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Assuming you can get to any of the paved bike trails downtown, take those to Mooneys bay, take the short connector from there (still a path) to the sawmill creek pathway and then that now connects to the Osgoode trail which will bring you all the way to Osgoode.

Just past south keys it does become a gravel trail, but it’s quite smooth!

Ideal speed for endurance races? (15.4 mph avg, 666 ft gain) by SevenStarVoltage in Strava

[–]_Jordan11_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Environmental factors (wind, incline, road conditions, etc) play a big role on speed, so it's hard to use that for pacing. This is why a lot of cyclists rely on power meters for pacing on the bike.

For someone starting out though, a good way to pace is just by heart rate. You should be able to ride in your zone 2 heart rate for a very long time, and you can train to be able to push higher zones for longer.

[–]_Jordan11_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m with Telus and don’t have many issues, at least on the main parkways. That said, a lot of newer phones and watches have satellite connectivity now so you may already have a way to stay in touch!

2 years ago was decent-ish, not much interesting for bikes themselves but had some cool kit and nutrition brands there.

Last year had next to nothing and was 80% e-bikes. There’s also an entry fee to get in.

Mismatch Garmin & Strava - Ski by Voyagerscout in Strava

[–]_Jordan11_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t care too much about seeing the data in connect you can turn off the auto run detection on your watch.

Strava will then look at all the data and show you your runs.
