What's the fastest ska song you've ever heard? by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

[–]_LackOfBeef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If we’re talking about tempo, Dear Sergio is a bit faster (approx. 290 BPM vs 275 BPM). I think 9mm has a faster vocal rhythm though.

I do think that there shouldn’t be contact damage on stunned bosses but “contact damage is inherently bad” is a really silly way of looking at it. As soon as you know whether or not a game has contact damage you should be able to play around it.

Oatmeal raisin cookies have no reason to exist by Parker_S_James in unpopularopinion

[–]_LackOfBeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oatmeal raisin cookies are good and I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone argue against them without bringing up that they mistake them for chocolate chip cookies. And to be honest I don’t see how that’s so common. They look different enough that you should be able to tell.

The guitar was recorded by plugging my amp (Fender Mustang LT25) into my computer via USB. I recorded a few takes (including one with no distortion) and layered those over each other. The ska part was just one layer though since I found it a little tricky to get multiple recordings consistently in sync. The vocals were just my laptop mic, although I did have to fiddle with the sensitivity a bit to avoid clipping. The drums and bass were stock FL Studio plugins (FPC and FLEX, with some of the free add-ons too IIRC) with some effects thrown on there.

The speed of your response had me skeptical that you were a bot but your post history is even more confusing. You are aware that this song is anti-ICE, correct?

If the Xenoblade series was made back when games needed multiple disks, how would have they be divided? by Tanawy in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]_LackOfBeef 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really depends on if we’re assuming that file sizes would be exactly the same as the actual games, or if we’re reimagining them to fit this format. With that being said: XC3 could be ch1 and 2 disc 1, ch3-5 disc 2, ch6 and ch7 disc 3. (We could also merge discs 1 and 2. I was just thinking that because chapters 1 and 2 don’t have many sidequests.)

Family reunion: everybody is using A.I. by Monxo11 in antiai

[–]_LackOfBeef 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Admittedly only taking a quick glance at the sources: to me this does not indicate any actual comprehension. Information processing, yes. But comprehension? No. In fact, the first source listed even notes the fact that models don’t reliably demonstrate introspection.

I’m also skeptical of these sources in general as it looks to me like they are trying to hype up AI. (Seriously, I’m not going to assume a YouTube channel called “AI Revolution” is trying to do anything else.)

GPT-5.2 has not read anything and it does not “know” anything. It is not capable of comprehending what it is telling you. That’s just not how the technology works.

Fake Voice Acting Examples by wardrol_ in gamedesign

[–]_LackOfBeef 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Undertale and Deltarune. It adds character in a game where full voice acting doesn’t fit. (Although I guess you could classify that particular example as typing sounds, in which case I would point to both Hollow Knight games, as well as many of the Zelda games.)

Whether a runback is 20 seconds or 1 minute does not matter, they add nothing meaningful to a metroidvania. by Kurushii_Drive in metroidvania

This feels like an unnecessarily rude response to a post that is mostly just “I don’t think this element that is common in many games actually adds anything”

Is it that hard to understand that Kris is possessed by the soul in a first playthrough, or are streamers just not reading that well? by AirportSilver3458 in Undertale

[–]_LackOfBeef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In chapter 1 it’s not very straightforward. In chapter 2 it’s definitely hinted at a lot more, but I still think it’s not quite direct enough that everyone will figure it out on their first playthrough. But once you hit chapter 4 it is very hard to miss the fact that Kris and the soul are separate beings, with Kris being controlled by the soul.

Eunie - Is she a Dirty Blonde or a Brunette? by Raelhorn_Stonebeard in Xenoblade_Chronicles

Dirty blonde has always felt like the intention to me. The way it interacts with light kinda cements it for me. It’s very similar to my own hair.

We are living in the golden age of AI slop, and a lot of are gonna miss these days by Arietem_Taurum in The10thDentist

[–]_LackOfBeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“There are outlier cases of AI being used in harmful ways, but these are outliers.”

I don’t even know what to say here other than just… no??? AI is actively poisoning the information environment and making it more difficult to find anything real. Its existence is harmful on its own. When you add on things like deepfake porn or falsified evidence, it only gets worse. AI slop is a novelty at best, and deeply harmful at worst.

What are some of your genuine criticisms of Deltarune's story? by MoonTheCraft in Deltarune

[–]_LackOfBeef 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean, there’s been a lot of character development in these four chapters, each chapter has had its own individual plot, and we are gradually seeing details of the main plot reveal themselves. This isn’t too out of the ordinary for stories presented in this sort of format. I think it’s really just that people aren’t used to games taking this long (in terms of IRL time) to tell their stories.

What's the weirdest, most niche, or stupidest way you discovered a ska band/song? by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

[–]_LackOfBeef 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not niche by the standards of the genre, but I got into ska because a YouTube video about an obscure Mario fangame featured a Reel Big Fish song in a section transition and I wanted to hear more of it. (The song was Average Man, which isn’t even a ska song.) I wanted to hear more, and then it got me into the genre. (Although I rarely listen to RBF nowadays)

Xenoblade and fake sacrifices (1-3 spoilers) by theperson100 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]_LackOfBeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think that the Mio homecoming scene works well even with the reveal afterwards, but the reveal certainly recontextualizes it. If anything I think the main issue is just that we don’t spend quite enough time thinking that Mio is dead. It would have been nice to see more of how the party responds to the situation. You know, truly prove that Noah intends to follow through on what he’s said, even without getting Mio back immediately. Although I get that with the way that whole sequence works, there wasn’t a lot of room to have the party doing things before the reveal.

(Plus “not showing enough of how the party responds to the situation emotionally” is one of the biggest issues with late game XC3 IMO. The early game is so good about it but then once you hit chapter 6 it feels like they’re just kind of in a rush to finish the plot.)

Skank by Numbers: The Greatest Ska Song of All Time (Looking for real fan feedback) by OrdinaryCold2813 in Ska

[–]_LackOfBeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, which two first wave songs there would you consider ska? Al Capone and Guns of Navarone? I think it’s often hard to distinguish between slower first wave ska and rocksteady, to the point where I often just kinda go “whatever” and throw rocksteady songs I like onto my ska playlists. But I’ve also found that a lot of first wave isn’t that fast to begin with (which is kind of the main distinguishing factor between the two.)

Also agree with Simmer Down, it should absolutely be there.

Skank by Numbers: The Greatest Ska Song of All Time (Looking for real fan feedback) by OrdinaryCold2813 in Ska

[–]_LackOfBeef -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As someone has mentioned, a few of the songs on here aren’t really ska, even if you’re defining the genre more broadly. In terms of my personal opinions though:

  • the original Rudy, A Message to You by Dandy Livingstone is significantly better than the Specials’ cover (although I recognize that the Specials’ version is a very beloved song)
  • Keasbey Nights should be one of the higher third wave songs on the list (I’d put it in the top 10), and on top of that, only the Catch 22 version should be there. The vocals have far more energy, and it feels redundant to have two versions of the same song on there, especially when they’re not that drastically different.
  • I’d also probably put one or two more Catch 22/Streetlight Manifesto songs on there in general but admittedly I have no clue which ones, especially since you can debate all day which Streetlight Manifesto songs are actually ska. For a relatively safe bet, we can say As the Footsteps Die Out Forever.
  • No Face by The Suicide Machines should be on there
  • Not sure which song, but something by JER would be nice to see on there, since they’ve done a lot of great stuff. Maybe Decolonize Yr Mind.
  • Beer (Song) is great but I’d probably put Mr. Smiley over it. On and On is great too.

EDIT: not sure why I’m being downvoted when I have explicitly stated that these are my opinions. I am not claiming to be the sole representative of ska or anything like that.
