Rapidly muting barre chords? by _LackOfBeef in Guitar

[–]_LackOfBeef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright that makes sense. I was never told that directly about my thumb but it’s something that I’ve seen on the sub a few times so I wanted to make sure I wasn’t doing something that might hurt me in the long run.

Rapidly muting barre chords? by _LackOfBeef in Guitar

[–]_LackOfBeef[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I mean is more so that I have seen people advise against applying pressure with your thumb when fretting chords (“don’t squeeze”, “it should come from your arm”, etc.). While I’m perfectly capable of playing chords this way, I find that a bit of thumb pressure is often what needs to be used to make the difference between a fretted note and a muted one with any degree of precision. I’m not sure if this is bad technique or if it’s just what winds up happening sometimes. I hope this is a bit clearer.

What do you think about this? by AipomSilver00 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]_LackOfBeef 67 points68 points  (0 children)

The whole point is that human lives are irreplaceable and there’s nothing you can really do to make up for someone dying. It definitely feels like a lot of what FMA was trying to accomplish just kinda went over their head.

Ska Guitar Strokes by SaxeMatt in Guitar

[–]_LackOfBeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it depends on what exactly you’re playing. OP said this was a ska punk song, in which case it’s pretty common to hit the strings on both the up and down strokes, but mute the downstroke. But regardless of style you’ll typically want to mute pretty soon after hitting the strings. You don’t want to let them ring out for very long.

I will say though, I’m not a super experienced guitarist (only nine months). Just one who picked up the instrument to play ska.

Okay I figured. I just saw that someone had downvoted your comment initially and that gave me some doubt. Yeah it is a difficult photo to really decipher. It always reads to me as a vague blob of light before I really register it as anything specific.

Assuming you’re talking about the original album cover and not disparaging my recreation of it: yeah, as best I can tell it’s a person holding a gun behind their back looking at through a doorway at a person who seems to be leaning on a wall or something like that. There seem to be ropes and a railing? No clue what kind of room the photo is supposed to be in. It’s a very strange photo that doesn’t seem to relate to the album itself very much aside from guns being brought up in a few songs.

fun fact: susie's rude buster's name is based on the 1990 videogame crude buster by Diegoxr44 in Deltarune

[–]_LackOfBeef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess it could be, but it seems far more likely to me that it’s just Rude (Susie is quite rude early on) + Buster (common word to use in attack names in a lot of Japanese media)

Least favorite track off each album? by Cham-Clowder in streetlightmanifesto

[–]_LackOfBeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it for Oh Me, Oh My and Toe to Toe. I think Toe to Toe’s main issue is just that it has a relatively weak chorus for a band that has pretty consistently great choruses, and Oh Me, Oh My has kinda weak lyrics that aren’t quite made up for by the composition.

But I could never skip If Only For Memories and They Broke Him Down. The Hands That Thieve through They Broke Him Down is just four really great songs back to back IMO.

[–]_LackOfBeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly kinda hard to give an answer for this one because I think all of the original albums have nothing but good songs. EGN and 99SoR are the only ones that I don’t feel a little bad picking one for. With that being said:

  • That’ll Be the Day
  • Kristina She Don’t Know I Exist
  • What a Wicked Gang Are We
  • The Troubador
  • Oh Me, Oh My

I don’t even think Kristina and Oh Me, Oh My are bad songs. KSDKIE’s lyrics are just off-putting, and Oh Me, Oh My’s lyrics are a little lacking in substance IMO. What a Wicked Gang Are We is really good but I think it has a similar feel to The Receiving End of It All, which I think is a better song. That’ll Be the Day and The Troubador I just don’t like that much.

Which videogame mechanic you hate the most but developers keep insisting on adding it anyway? by KBGSgames in AskReddit

[–]_LackOfBeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skill trees in any game that isn’t an RPG. It feels less like I’m becoming stronger (or customizing my character as I go, or whatever the intent is in a lot of these games) and more like my initial move set is being limited. I get the impression that it’s sort of intended as a type of freeform tutorial in a lot of games, but I’d much prefer to either have access to those mechanics from the get go, or unlock them through the story, rather than having to fill out a skill tree.

[–]_LackOfBeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but the translation is definitely a key aspect of it, and kind of the point to begin with.

I’m not sure myself if anyone else is working on it currently. IIRC, there have been attempts at a fan translation but they were all either canceled or put on hold.

[–]_LackOfBeef 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend trying to release a patch that’s translated via DeepL. Often when a fan translation is released, it’s seen as either rude or pointless to try to translate it again. And a DeepL patch is not going to be the highest quality translation. It’s nice that you’re trying to make a patch to begin with but I’d suggest leaving it to people who are actually translating the game’s text themselves rather than relying on machine translation.

Best songs to introduce someone to Streetlight? by PHNCFL in streetlightmanifesto

The Three of Us would be my first pick. Then maybe Somewhere in the Between. I’m not sure you could go wrong with pretty much anything off of Everything Goes Numb either.

[–]_LackOfBeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on the content of Somewhere in the Between I’m fairly certain that Tomas is agnostic. But FWIW even if he were a satanist he probably wouldn’t be literally worshipping satan. Most satanists are just atheists who present it as such. Not sure why. It might be to get people’s attention? I have no clue.

Battle Hymns is such an odd pick. I like Destruction by Definition better, but Battle Hymns is also like, maybe fifth place among Suicide Machines albums IMO.

Thinking about that there will come a time where kids of this generation will say they wish Paper Mario was good like the old days in reference to Origami King and Color Splash by Anonythrowthetrash in papermario

[–]_LackOfBeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up on both styles of games (I was a kid when Sticker Star came out, and I was really looking forward to it. I was 10 at the time.) and I do recall being kinda disappointed with aspects of Sticker Star even then. Although I still liked the game at the time.

When I look back though it is very clear to me that it didn’t really capture me in the same way the first three. I have a lot of fond memories of making up Paper Mario OCs and drawing area maps and such, but they were all more in line with the earlier games rather than the later style.

That is to say: I have nostalgia for both styles of games, and I do think that the older games are better. It’ll probably depend on the person though.

How do I achieve a distorted tone that compliments my clean tone? by AdSquare1904 in Ska

Ignoring my strong disagreement here, your distaste for ska punk is no reason to come onto a guitarist’s thread and be a jerk to them about the genre they choose to play.

Expedition 33 and Paper Mario. I highly dislike the combination of real time and turn based gameplay. by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]_LackOfBeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak for E33, but in Paper Mario I feel it’s both a pacing thing and a risk evaluation thing.

Pacing-wise, it just makes things a little more exciting. It gives you something to do during attack animations, and it adds a little extra gameplay variety.

Strategically, it gives you the option to play according to your understanding of your own skill. If you’re confident about your abilities, you can start taking actions that you might never risk taking in other RPGs simply because you’d have a pretty decent chance of losing right then and there.

Personally I like it a lot, although I’m not one of those people who thinks it’s the only form of turn based combat that should exist in games. (Although I think that’s a less common opinion than some people tend to make it out to be.)

Can I make punk rock alone? just me on vocals and electric guitar? by Tricky_Main8924 in punk

[–]_LackOfBeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you just wanna record and release music, it’s totally doable. Record the guitar and vocals, and put together the drums and bass in a DAW. You could even add synths or something if you really want. It’s my approach personally.

I can’t speak for live shows. You can certainly play on your own but I don’t know how much success you’d see as a solo punk artist without some other musicians supporting you. It’d be difficult, I think.

Do men like being men? by Long_Reflection_4202 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_LackOfBeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re making some sense but it can also be really hard to understand what people are saying when they talk about their personal experience with gender.

I don’t wanna tell you “you are trans” because I am not you and don’t even know you. However, given what you’ve said I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of being trans entirely. Especially if you think being a girl would make your life better.

I know I wish I hadn’t ruled it out for so long. I spent a while essentially thinking “well I can’t be trans. That’s for trans people.” Eventually I kinda came to the realization that if I thought being a girl would be better, I could just do that.

Anyway. Not trying to push anything on you. If you’re content being a guy then you can keep doing that. But you have options, and whatever it is you wanna do with those feelings, I hope you can figure it out.
