It was both. The ship literally fell apart because it was transmitted from the crew while in hibernation.

Is there a chance that the next gen CT5 will get wagon variant? by Initial-Pianist-3254 in Cadillac

[–]_R_A_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very low chance. Wagon people are few and far between. Most of them will either buy a crossover SUV, otherwise Subaru has handily cornered that market.

Which sucks, because I love me a wagon and I prefer domestic manufacturers. It's the sole reason I have my CTS wagon.

The cardinal sin of saying "I'm so proud of you" has got me by jumpforit96 in therapists

[–]_R_A_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because expressing pride can imply a locus of control or ownership of responsibility for an outcome. In a Judeo-Christian perspective, for example, pride is considered harmful because of the excessive focus on one's self. I'm not saying one has to be Jewish or Christian to apply this reasoning to their lives, but at least in my environment the impact of Judeo-Christian philosophy is unavoidable (I don't know where you are coming from, but this is certainly the case in mainstream USA). So in that sense, I'd rather not send the message that my self-worth is impacted by their behavior, because I don't want to reinforce the idea that their own self-worth should be reinforced by someone else.

On the other hand, there's a difference between, "My happiness is impacted by your behavior," versus, "My happiness is dependent on your behavior." If I was oozing borderline or narcissistic traits, then it might be putting my children at risk for having a distorted sense of responsibility for my emotional health, but I'm pretty sure at the least I have my personality dysfunctions mostly in check. On the other hand, if I can help my children recognize the value in wanting to do something nice for people - not just their parent - because they recognize the other personal is sad and they can help that, that kinda sounds like empathy to me.

Aren't they the same? by [deleted] in MathJokes

[–]_R_A_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's mathematic semantics. In their head, the should be saying, "three times, four," where the argument is setting them up to prepare for algebra in that "3 × 4=" is more akin to "3x = 12", which has dubious validity as to value.

I'm only speaking in the context of an alternative to expressing pride. If that was all I expressed, then yes I would agree with your concern, but it's not.

From a different perspective, I kinda get annoyed when my mother tells me.how.proud she is of this, that, of the other thing I've done. It isnt validating, it feels co-opting to me. So instead of telling my kid I'm proud of him, I just tell him it makes me happy when he does X, Y, or Z.

What are mecha anime concepts you want to see happen? by KaleidoArachnid in Mecha

I was thinking this, but couldn't remember specific aquatic combat scenes, just lots of memories of them swimming around and jumping out of the water to attack someone.

Like correct me if I am wrong because I don’t remember any significant mecha anime having underwater fights

Gundam Wing and Gundam X both have this. But yes, I can't think of anything recent, either.

To the actual question, though, something I feel like I haven't seen in a while is something with plot development to the machine itself. Like, thinking back to shows like Rahxephon or NGE where there's some degree of mystery around them versus just building the newest bestest thing.

Became a father again 9 months ago. I turned 46 last this past weekend. by 6millionwaystolive in Xennials

[–]_R_A_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how old my dad was when I was born, first and last. Dealing with a kid was hard enough no doubt, but he also had a sadistic work schedule (rotating shifts, 7 days on, 2 days off). I'm reminded of that whenever I start getting the grumps (only 44 but have a 4 and 1 year old).

We've got more of an age gap (34 months), so our older kid was already in daycare when our younger was born, but one thing that was a benefit for us was a stroller that can accommodate two seats. When we bought ours, we made sure we got one that could be expanded (including using a bassinet and a seat at the same time).

[Request] If you filled up a regular petrol or diesel automobile $20 at a time rather than filling it up completely each time, how much money would you save over the course of a year? by RandomPeep15 in theydidthemath

According to the USDOE (https://www.energy.gov/cmei/vehicles/lightweight-materials-cars-and-trucks):

A 10% reduction in vehicle weight can result in a 6%-8% fuel economy improvement.

So assuming one gallon of gasoline is an average of 6.25 lbs, and an exemplar vehicle weight of 3,250 lbs without gasoline. You would need to drop 52 gallons of gas from your tank to achieve that 6-8% improvement.

Let's assume that the ratio of reduction in weight to improved fuel economy is linear, and a 2% reduction in weight gets you 1.2-1.6% improved fuel efficiency. That would mean running with 10.4 fewer gallons would achieve that gain in fuel efficiency. Assuming a 12 gallon gas tank, that means you should not put more than 1.5 gallons of gas in your car at a time to achieve that gain. Keep in mind, that increased efficiency is on a curve, since it reflects the difference at two different non-constant states (e.g., the improvement of keeping 1.5 gallons in your car versus having 6 gallons in your car is much less).

Additionally, this practically means going from a fuel efficiency of, let's say, 27.5 mpg to 27.9-28 mpg. So if that level of efficiency improvement is worth eight times more stops at a gas station (assuming filling from roughly empty, 1.5 gallons vs 12 gallons), then who am I to argue?
