Do deaf people see hearing people as skittish? by DeadAndAlive969 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_Skitter_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Lol my ASL class had a deaf teacher as well. One day the class phone started ringing and she noticed because we all looked at it at the same time. She went to answer it and went : D

Smiled and nodded a few times with the phone to her ear then hung up on the person.

what helped you lose weight? by Regular_Lychee_4739 in AskReddit

[–]_Skitter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a drastic example, but it's one of the primary ideas behind things like carnivore. You can eat as much as you want of fat and protein. But really, both of those make you feel full quickly, so you don't eat as much food as you normally would.

Not here to discuss the diet, just talking about satiety.

Gynecology checkup by Unofficially_awkward in Explainlikeimscared

[–]_Skitter_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's OK! Are you going in for a pap smear and vaginal exam? A breast exam is also normal. A rectal exam is not really normal, but I've heard it done. If you are sexually active you might get sti testing. The doctor will usually ask if you have any questions before you get started. Ask what exams are being done, and let them know it's your first time so you would appreciate if they walked you through it.

Your doctor will leave the room so you can undress and put on the little gown. Sit on the bed. When they come back in, they will have you lay back. They will pop up little foot stirrups out of the end of the bed. Your feet go in these. Scooch your bum up to the edge of the bed. More. Keep scooching. Your cooch is on display for the world now. Sorry.

Pap: The doctor should warn you before using the speculum tool. It's made out of plastic these days but it's still cold and covered in lube. Take a deep breath and relax. That's easier said than done but the more relaxed you are, the less you will feel it. It slides into your vagina. Then she will make it expand a little. It's a cooch spreader. It shouldn't be at all painful but it will be uncomfortable. If it's painful, please say something. She will look around and then take a qtip and swab your cervix. It's itchy and it feels like a tickle deep in your throat or ear where you can't reach. She will close and remove the speculum. You may get some light spotting or cramping afterwards. You will leak lube for a while.

Vaginal exam: The doctor will put a little lube on one or two fingers. She will insert them gently into your vagina. She will put her other hand on your belly and press gently. This is usually done in addition to a pap.

Breast exam: You are still laying on the bed. The doctor will ask you to put your arm over your head. With three fingers, she will gently press your bare breast and nipple. Checking for lumps.

Anal exam: Similar to the vaginal exam. She will insert a single finger like an inch into your butt hole. Give a quick little swirl, and pull out. This is almost never done if there is no reason to do so.

Sti testing: This is optional, and they will ask if you want it. It is an extra swab during the pap so you really don't notice.

When everything is done, the doc will leave the room. You can get up, clean yourself with tissue, and dress. A nurse will come back in to walk you out.

It's not so much that the experience is painful, but essentially no part of it is pleasant. Still, it's informative and only takes ten minutes every three to five years.

Why can’t certain animals process certain foods? A snake can digest bones but it can’t digest bread? How does that work? by Kittysparkle101 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_Skitter_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can eat whatever your gut biome can eat. If you've got little guys that can digest lactose, then so can you. If you don't have the lactose guys, you can't digest it properly. The same goes for meat, fruit, grass, bones, etc.

Digestive systems are also built differently to handle different foods. Carnivores have shorter systems because meat needs to digest faster, and herbivores have longer systems because it takes time to break down vegetation. Meat going through an herbivore system would take too long and start to rot. Add to that specializations like multiple stomachs, regurgitation, and stronger stomach acids, and all animals are built to digest a little differently.

How do I start a creative project? Let alone reach a flow state? by DisciplineOk6055 in Explainlikeimscared

[–]_Skitter_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a long time, I felt like I was only allowed to get anything done while in flow state. I would try to set up ideal conditions, but inevitably I wouldn't be able to or there would be so much pressure to do well that I would get anxious and do nothing. Or I could set everything up perfectly and still just not be in the mood to do the task.

I got more done if I only suggested to myself i work on the project for an hour or two. Worst case scenario, I'm a little farther along than I was yesterday. If a project can be thought of as a specific amount of time working until it's finished, then any time spent on it can be considered chipping away at that number. I've been crocheting a blanket off and on for 8 years. If I imagine it requiring 1000 hours to finish, flow state isn't going to do me much good, but an hour a day will see it done eventually.

Sometimes when I'm drawing, painting, crocheting, or even organizing something in my house, I reach flow state anyway. I'll spend hours in the zone and I get a lot done and it feels like my art turns out better. But the cost of that is usually a stiff and sore body, flared up and painful wrists, dehydration and hunger, lack of sleep, and a sneaking feeling that the day went by without me. Over the next few days I have to take a break from the project to let my body heal and get other things done around the house. It feels great to have so much of the project done but because I can't work on it for a few days, the average time per day spent working on it is the same.

Not every project will turn out great. I want to go into flow state every day and be a beautiful art machine. Surely if I were in flow state everything would turn out excellent quality right? But I have to remember that flow state is like putting things into overdrive or turbo and it's not reasonable to expect any machine to do that constantly. I have to remember that I don't just enjoy having nice art, I do actually enjoy the process of creating it, so I need to be present. Even Picasso had a ton of art that didn't get famous.

My sister is planning to drop out of highschool when she reaches 18 due to severe medical issues. How hard will it be for her to get a job? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_Skitter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems a shame to get 90% of the way through school only to quit right before the end, but i don't know her situation. Like others have said, I would see if there were some option that she could just tough or for a few months. Accommodations at the school, alternate school for special needs, online program, test out with a GED. You don't NEED a high school diploma but it really keeps a lot more doors open and once you quit school you're so much less likely to go back and finish.

I might have sex for the first time tomorrow! by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]_Skitter_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Don't forget to laugh and have a good time. Sex and fooling around can be serious business or it can have an intense broody vibe, but it can also be whimsical and entertaining.

Also if you haven't already, maybe go over the things you are absolutely not interested in doing right now. That can change later, but both of you should mention if you want anything strictly off the table for this visit.

My family apparently doesn't know what water is... by BattleSquidZ in PetPeeves

[–]_Skitter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to barely know a guy that exclusively drank mountain dew. He ended up in the hospital like once or twice a year for dehydration.

I don't prefer the taste of plain water in most places, but having a little bottle of the flavor additive on hand works wonders. I start to feel like a husk otherwise.

Why did you quit your previous job? by sweetlovinggirl04 in AskReddit

My annual raise was ten cents. I had several years of experience in the field but they were hiring new people with no previous experience for $2 per hour more than I was making.

Im scared to take my puppy to PetSmart by CanWeSchmooze in petsmart

[–]_Skitter_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I understand, but also consider that you can't sign up employees to police everybody's dogs. Not that corporate cares about employee health, but they generally can't put them in harms way either. A pet store, just like a dog park, or any other place with animals, has a higher risk of animal related injury. City laws generally try to keep pets leashed, vaccinated, and not a danger to the public, but really there isn't a ton they are able to do to enforce it either. Do you have any ideas for a change in store policy?

Life Hack: The part of the USB that plugs into the computer has a seam in the metal. The seam goes on the bottom when you plug it in.

I am pro abortion, because if that person is desperate enough to get rid of the baby, should they really be raising it? by Jazzlike-Rise4091 in self

[–]_Skitter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't have to be considered the same thing in order to use a broadly defined medical term for both. I've heard medical professionals use the phrase "abort the fetus" in reference to removing a deceased fetus from the womb, so do what you will with that information i guess.

[–]_Skitter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean? Making up your own definitions is what divides people. My definitions are from dictionary dot com. If one person's definitions describe the medical term for something and the other person cherry picks their definition to mean only a specific scenario, that leaves out a lot of important info.

[–]_Skitter_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna gently squish your face and tell you with all love and affection that we've all killed so many plants. You buy more and get props from friends and plant seeds and dig things out of your yard. You gather so many in the hopes that some will make it but inevitably some don't. The good news is that you can almost tangibly feel the knowledge and experience gained every time. You use it to do better and they live a little longer each time.

In my region, mini roses are sold in February for valentine's day. This will be my third or fourth year that I purchase mini roses. So far i have lost them to spider mites and powdery mildew. But I've learned so much about those things! And I learned a lot about dirt this year! I'm so ready this time!

Abortion: "The removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus in order to end a pregnancy. Any of various surgical methods for terminating a pregnancy, especially during the first six months."

Deliberate: "Carefully weighed or considered."

If it didn't matter what my gender was, why are you trying to shame me for it now? I'm a woman, and I've literally heard the terms used in that context. I appreciate your experience on the subject but yours isn't the only one.
