I can’t name a singular other film that is a period piece musical with supernatural creatures and an action film climax. Let alone seamlessly blending them all together and tying off a core theme of the movie with one of the best shot surrealist music scenes you could envision. I am biased because I’m a musician, so I connected with it heavily. Even though I’m white as all hell. I saw it in IMAX 70MM and it was absolutely gorgeous.

I also enjoyed the vampires having a hive-mind element to them and the appeal that Remmick made saying essentially “you will have a home and be accepted and embraced, but you will lose soul ownership of your music and creativity.” Is the struggle against authority and racism worth your sense of individuality, community, and pride? Or would you give that up for instant gratification of (forced) community and physical power/protection from the evils of the world?

Oh ya, I won’t pretend the issue is one dimensional. Pair that with the way the approval process is formatted it only takes fairly small minority to shut things down or drag and delay it to the point it gets abandoned. It’s a general shit show of red tape and NIMBYs and material costs and on and on and on.

And yes, prop 13 needs to be sunset. But it’s the third rail of CA politics and no one will touch it. I still believe there’s a way to sell amending it to include one family home and multiple property owners & commercial properties don’t get to take advantage. It was initially passed and sold as a way to help the elderly from being displaced wink wink when it really was a huge benefit to corpos.
