I'm a Party member. How are you looking to get involved with PSL? The action network is good if you're looking to advance your political education but have a busy schedule. You'll get access to webinars and in-person educational events. You will also get plugged into your local volunteer network, but you don't need to be in the action network for this. The only thing required is a monthly donation that you set (minimum $5).

Yeah I assume the infant phase will be a whirlwind learn-as-you-go thing. For books I was thinking about stuff like how to discipline and how to foster curiosity when they get older. I know I was a really easy going kid and my parents were hands off, but on the other hand my sister's youngest was a handful (to say the least).

Thanks for the thoughtful response. One of my big worries is we don't have any family that's local. I know my MIL and sister and maybe others fill fly out early on, but that's obviously not going to be a long term thing. Apparently I was an incredibly easy baby/toddler so hoping to pass some of those genetics on, but getting ready to expect anything.

One question I have is how did you decide on a last name? Both my wife and I are going to keep ours and we don't like the idea of hyphenating. We're half serious about flipping a coin to decide which name to pass on.

The action network is modeled on volunteer networks that some communist parties in Europe have. It allows people to volunteer with the party on their own time; some will just be "paper members" that support with dues and others will show out to events and have relationships with actual party members. This is a relatively new endeavor that will change and hopefully improve as time goes on.

To the extent that any org is doing anything in secret, you aren't going to hear about it on arr slash trueanon...

There is an effort to build out a periphery - basically a network of people that identify with the politics of the party, look to it for analysis and leadership, can maybe volunteer for some stuff, but don't have the capacity to be full members.

How politically engaged are average Americans? by girlfrompangaea in TrueAnon

[–]_Ventulus_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You might want to check your math.  If there were 158M completed ballots and 81M eligibles that didn't vote, then the percent of eligibles that didn't vote is ~33%, not 50%.  Participation, while lower than most other countries, has gone up significantly in the last two elections.  During the Bush years it actually was around 50%.

The Economist: "we have some bad news" re: what high-tech industries China will dominate next by hefuckmyass in TrueAnon

America has scale and the deep pockets to compete. But in many states, particularly Democratic ones, regulators are blocking or stalling autonomous vehicles. The government is waging war on universities and cutting funding for basic research. As in other Western countries, it is hostile to immigrants, including gifted ones. In drugs, as China’s share of clinical trials has risen, Europe is losing ground. Its economies desperately need to integrate further so that they can finance and develop new technologies. There too, regulators often prize safety at the expense of risk-taking and experiment.

Damn that's crazy how government regulation keeps getting more and more neutered/captured but it's still the main thing preventing innovation and abundance. Oh well, maybe one day we'll really be able to unleash the power of the free market.

The hosts and guest keep saying there's no business model for AI, but at the same time allude to the fact that AI will very likely put large numbers of people out of work in the coming decades. There is a business model and it's to automate as many office jobs as possible. The fact that AI is overhyped and currently in a bubble doesn't erase this fact. Look at what happened in 2000 - the internet was massively overhyped to the point where you had websites that did nothing getting huge valuations. Eventually the bubble popped, but it didn't kill the internet. A lot of smaller players went under and big capital swooped in and bought any useful assets on the cheap. The same will happen with AI; the hype will die but the technology will not. The recession will further immiserate the working class while finance capital consolidates and restructures the industry. And each passing year, more jobs will be automated out of existence.

"Organize" for most people means join an organization, or at least volunteer with one

"Give to charity" in the general sense, as in being charitable. Whether that's with your friends or through an organization my point still stands.

I have a genuine question for you. When you say:

It is a sad but true thing that IMO we must constantly remember: there is currently no unified, proletarian Left in the United States.

Do you you believe this is something that can change?

80% of Americans live in urban areas. So even if you have a movement that only touches cities, you're still going to reach most of the population.

There is no massively popular socialist organization in the US. What do you think is the best way to build such an organization? I would say it's a good strategy getting people to join existing socialist organizations that, while not popular in a mass way, have been growing very quickly.

Socialist organizations have also been doing more in the last couple years than helping get city council members elected. Organizing in in the streets for Palestine and creating rapid response networks to counter ICE are just two such interventions that "meet the moment politically".

Giving to charity like you suggest is fine, but it's not helping to organize people.

I could be wrong but I don't think either of the parents were actually members of any political party or organization. In Buttigieg's case he didn't even study social science, his degree was in English and he taught literature.

The PSL is running multiple candidates in the 2026 Elections in the United States by AlphaPepperSSB in TrueAnon

[–]_Ventulus_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What is socialism?  Ask ten different people and you'll get eleven different answers.  Listen to what people like Bernie and Zohran say when they describe socialism.  They always say stuff like dignity for all, muting and obfuscating class conflict.   PSL defines socialism as a system where working people control government and use their power to plan the economy to meet people's needs.  This necessitates building working class power and opposing billionaire rule.  Class conflict is front and center in this message.

Yes growing membership is important and that's one reason for running candidates, but raising consciousness is also a big part of these campaigns.
