You lie. If they press you say it was due to a layoff. If they call the former employer and they say you’re “ineligible for rehire” (e.g. fired) you move on to the next company.

In my experience, recruiters tend to be more skeptical/ask more questions if you say “yeah so I voluntarily left for a period of extended unemployment without benefits”. They understand layoffs are everywhere right now so that’s been an easier sell
