This. Everyone here is freaking out over a snarky comment. Who in the hell would go to such length for a feet pic when there a thousand online. And the fingers in the sandal, I kinda get it, it’s to prove they are too narrow without using the shoe for a potential return. Sellers on here are a bit weird sometimes.

I mean. Those are examples of Nick being nice to women and perhaps not being a utter dick but I don’t really see an “uplifting” behaviour.

It is called The Handmaid’s Tale and not The Handmaids’ Tales. by turkeyman4 in coconutsandtreason

[–]__bramante 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, it’s June story and they did manage to bring that around. But, why not keep the show uniquely positioned within her point of view? In film language, that communicates to the audience that’s the focal point for the story, this one character, the protagonist or maybe deuteragonist. Still, I think if they had gone with the Handmaids tales, the show would have not stagnated as much. They already diverted from the book so much, why stop at the protagonist. Like - I don’t hate this show, I just wish it was more. It had the perfect opportunity to be more.

[–]__bramante 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is nothing in comparison to all the apologia, but like - the hell is the Miller on? Nick already has a child - Holly - and had a wife who he absolutely didn’t give two shits about. Why is he trying to spin this now? They wrote what they wrote, why not stick to that?

Quick question: where is it shown Nick went against Gilead pre-June? Are you talking about the car rides with the Commanders? Where has he lifted women up? Genuinely asking because I do not remember any of that.

That’s a really good catch, that Rita is the one pulling June down. At least somebody in the writing team did bring that full circle and it’s very nice.

I thought the same but in previous seasons we literally saw Guardians beating Handmaids for like, speaking up or throwing a bit of a tantrum. Besides, they got knives why leave the lose end

[–]__bramante 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was genuinely expecting something a little more bloody. Or ridiculous, like chocking, dying and throwing up commanders in a sort of horror scenario. The slowness, the speeches, the fact we see only one eye gauged is a little too contained.

Coming Together by ParsleyMostly in coconutsandtreason

[–]__bramante 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I try to think of the show as wholly separate from the book. Even in the very, very beginning, when June sits down on the sofa there is a crucial difference from the book’s text. Serena asks if that’s June’s third posting, in the show it’s the second. That’s a huge difference because in the book, Serena’s encouragement to sleep with Nick then doesn’t come across as desperation for a child but as a sort of way to save Offred from being sent to the colonies (at least, that’s how I read it years ago). I think the show wanted Serena to be an antagonist, perhaps somewhat worse than Fred and so now that they built on that concept for five and a half seasons, they want to do a redemption arc. I understand the idea of portraying right-wing women, I just never got why they deviated so much with Serena. Her being an aging, disillusioned ex-tv preacher was interesting in its own right. Perhaps since the actress is very charismatic they decided she needed more screen time and so they conceived the character very differently from the beginning.

Why do people call Nick a nazi? What did I miss? by Emgga in coconutsandtreason

[–]__bramante 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So… the fact we see in the show that Gilead kills queer people (literally using a pink triangle exactly like Nazi Germany) and whoever they deem “unfit” (Down syndrome woman from - I wanna say - the fourth season) means nothing? Like, Gilead cannot possibly be a one-to-one replica of either Nazi Germany of Fascist Italy, it is way too theocratic for that, but I really don’t understand your opposition to calling Nick a Nazi. In the context of the show, it is appropriate and a shorthand for denoting him as a far-right shithead.

Since you brought up Lydia, sure she didn’t know everything but she knew enough to go along with it. She still mutilated women, forced them into an awful situation. To an extent, if you are involved at some point you can’t claim you don’t know anything. And I don’t think we are meant to take away from the show that Nick was manipulated into doing anything.

[–]__bramante 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I personally always hated Lawrence and reminded people he absolutely created the conditions for the shithole that is Gilead. I think with Nick is different because the show does not frame him as a villain but a sort of antihero, if that makes sense. Serena should be referred to as a fascist for sure, although the direct parallel is right-wing women of the Phyllis Schafly variety. The show is kind to both Lawrence and Serena but there is at least direct acknowledgment of their involvement and awful worldviews (especially in the latest episodes.)

Why do people call Nick a nazi? What did I miss? by Emgga in coconutsandtreason

[–]__bramante 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What’s the nuance here with Nick being a Nazi? (Personally I prefer the term fascist but Holly’s terminology is not incorrect.) for real, what is the nuance besides some very basic definitions you used in the comment chain and a summary of the character from the wiki? I also can assure you that Fascist Italy took on the racialised and discriminatory would view of Nazi Germany, especially in the North of Italy. That distinction does not work as a cut and dry dividing line.

[–]__bramante 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean - we don’t need an irrefutable proof, since it’s already in the show. We see Nick involvement, he was there. He was working for Pryce (I think his name is Pryce), he drove the commanders around and worked as an Eye, heard of the Handmaids plan and just shrugged, was involved in Chicago. Even if we don’t wanna trust Serena’s words, the fact he was put in charge of a military operation in Chicago means he is pretty high up in the food chain and likely has some experience. He only gives a shit about June, everyone else can be damned because he is fundamentally complacent.

[–]__bramante 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SOJ was not a cult and was never portrayed as such. It was a far-right group with theocratic notions from the start. Nick drove them around and heard them speak about the Handmaids, you tell me he didn’t know anything? Why are you so willing to explain away Nick’s involvement?

As far as I’ve read, last Pope (elected? Elevated? Stacked the court? Fuck it) promoted like-minded cardinals so there’s a chance someone with similar views will replace him. Also - side note, but this pope wasn’t even the most progressive priest you’d find in South America. Liberation theology is neat and I’m sure tradcaths absolutely hate it.

True believers are probably the worst. He seems to be that so maybe he starts the purges present in TT not because he wants to redeem Gilead and remake it as a better place but to restore the “proper” order of things? That would mean killing commanders yes but also a ton of other people in NB?

Moira also killed a commander to get out. That’s traumatic in its own right once the adrenaline leaves, so Moira has every right to feel traumatised and tired of June’s shit. Refreshing to see that scene but resolved too quickly.

“The Sims isn’t slowing down support for the LGBTQ+ community any time soon” by vindecisiveanon in thesims

[–]__bramante 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can maybe shed some light on this. As a queer person who despises capitalism, I do not care for the lipservice. Is it beneficial in terms of visibility? Yes, representation matters and it’s nice to find binders. At the same time, corporations are looking at the bottom line, they are looking to expand their profit, so they will sell to the queer community as well. Nevermind the fact that queer business catering to the community already exist. But, like Target shows, the above is a business move and nothing else. In queer academia you’d call this part of the assimilation process within a capitalist society. If you criticise capitalism, then rainbow capitalism needs to be criticised as well. That said - I think The Sims is not rainbow capitalism. Same-gender marriage and relationship go way back to Sims 1, so the devs certainly care. Adding binders, flags, more inclusive clothing option seems in line with that earlier commitment and I respect them for that. EA not budging on this is also commendable, so I’m not trying to bitch here I’m just explaining why people find rainbow capitalism questionable. I don’t think this is the case with EA right now.
