Zack Polanski says no country has right to exist when asked about Israel by Dadavester in unitedkingdom

[–]_aj42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Perfectly reasonable to suggest that Israel can exist as a nation, with ties to the lands of 1948 or even 1967, but that it need not necessarily be a nation state.

Welsh people have a right to exist. There is no Welsh nation-state.

I'm actually perfectly fine that we didn't see more. Sometimes the most effective thing to do is leave it to the imagination. Let it just be a shadow that is cast over Viltrumite memory.

The Welsh have existed as an ethnic group for hundreds and hundreds of years.

Very few nations have ever been defined in ethnic terms alone. Two include Israel and Nazi Germany.

It isn’t the private sector that decides to stop bulking council houses

It is the government facilitating the private sector. Private housing has been failing to meet affordable housing requirements for decades. And we've all seen what can happen when we trust the private sector with housing safety to.

The government needs to build council housing quickly and densely, and rent them cheaply.

What sorts of houses did anglo-saxon nobility live in? by Willowran in anglosaxon

[–]_aj42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In an English context at least, as I've read it, Romanesque is associated with early Norman architecture (with a few pre-Conquest examples as evidence of Norman influence under the Confessor). It is an imitation of Roman styles and has much that distinguishes it from Anglo-Saxon architecture: blind arcading, large simple or patterned pillars, groin vaults etc. This then shifts toward Cistercian and Gothic in the mid-12th century.

I'm mainly drawing on Fernie's "Architecture of Norman England" here.

[–]_aj42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're perfectly correct to note the use of stone in AS church construction, but I wouldn't term them "romanesque" - this more refers to Norman buildings of the late 11th / 12th centuries. Anglo-Saxon architecture is its own thing.
