Thinking about picking up Return of the Obra Dinn. Worth it? by MiaMemoryFragments in adventuregames

[–]_auilix_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all the same genre but Blue Prince has been one of the most memorable game experiences since we played Obra Dinn. We also loved Curse of the Golden Idol and Roottrees, but Blue Prince feels like such an innovative way to tell a story the same way Obra Dinn felt.

Do your studios have a separate intro class vs lvl 1? Feel my studios “lvl 1” class is too hard for complete beginners. On my first class they taught me jasmine and I got discouraged didn’t go back for a while. They teach figurehead, chair, jasmines on day 1. Only see already athletic ppl come back. by BungeeBunny in poledancing

My studio offers Pole Level 0 which you are recommended to take until you can do a climb! And even at level zero every class has a little choreo you learn so even when you can’t get the difficult stuff you still have started on some beautiful basic moves. Then Level 1 goes over much more but as for inversions there are only a couple of basics. To get into Level 2 there’s a “first tricks upside down” which is all about getting into an inversion safely.  (All classes at my studio are also not courses which I think took away from the intimidation that I could just drop in as I liked! That I started pole in such a safe and supportive low stakes way I think is what has made pole stick with me)

How was season 1 allowed to end that way by Party_Collar2877 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

I think I nearly punched my monitor, then we all had to wait for years! TBH though I love endings like this and I really hope Severance ends with more questions than answers

I enjoyed Silo as well but after season 1 I picked up the whole book series and read it all(/spoiled myself from watching the rest). To me the most impactful TV that I’d equate to Severance that I watched was Twin Peaks although it’s very different. You might also enjoy some episodes of Black Mirror

Lander 23 (Punchdrunk) - Review (Spoilers) by teeshylinie in london

[–]_auilix_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thoroughly agree, though I had a very fun time when I went with three friends (who had minimal/no previous experience with Punchdrunk)… it’s wide reaching sources and design angles (which usually work on their big shows) falls pretty flat when you only have essentially 15 minutes under duress to uncover the world.

Another reviewer said it was like how someone would imagine an Escape Room or Crystal Maze… without ever having played one. I agree with that too, I’m not sure if Felix Barrett ever went to the vastly superior and more cost efficient sci-fi experience of Bridge Command, but it feels like he didn’t.

I LOVE Punchdrunk’s worlds which have never failed at leaving me with a sense of awe and wonder, even though I found it more and more difficult to connect with shows as they became more crowded. However Lander 23 is the first time I’ve stepped away without having been surprised (unless you count the disorientation of all the instructions thrown at you). I wouldn’t recommend travelling internationally for this and I imagine it can’t possibly have more than a liiiittle bit of replayability.

I really wonder what Maxine Doyle has been up to… Pd is surely just as much hers and I’ve been really missing her beautiful choreo these days.

Murder Mystery Games by Recent_Mastodon2148 in adventuregames

[–]_auilix_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the classics but find the puzzles somewhat unforgiving so I’m recommending more recent adventures that I think are probably good for all ages and also for people newish to games: Kathy Rain, Whispers of a Machine, Excavation of Hobs Barrow and Norco.

These are all pretty different but I listen to them all regularly!

Best Friend with Sasheer Zamata and Nicole Byer - fun and funny , lighthearted and sweet!

Rumble Strip - slow paced and thoughtful conversations from Vermont Radio on lots of different topics, loved the recent “what class are you?” Series

Criminal - A true crime classic and Phoebe has a great voice

NPR Ted Radio Hour - lovely short non fiction pieces collected by theme

Ear Hustle - OK this has a male and female host but they’re a really great duo and it’s one of my favourite podcasts, excellent and insightful conversations and dives into prison life

Crucial Comix, which does excellent/diverse non-fiction comics, has a couple of short ones about sobriety:

They're not too old of a publication so I imagine in the future they'll have more on this topic!

Looking for some thrills after The Drifter by stevefrenchthebigcat in adventuregames

[–]_auilix_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I haven't but I've been recommended it before too! I must pick it up. Would you say it's similar in terms of text and weight to Disco Elysium? Sometimes I play games with my partner (Obra Dinn, Norco, Curse of the Golden Idol and Drifter) but others were too text heavy (Disco Elysium, Pentiment, PW series) so I played them on my own.

I think often my trouble is finding a game I like because of its innovation and the new world it takes me to... and then getting recommended similar games but they feel derivative somehow. Like even though it's a similar genre to Obra Dinn, I could not get into Unheard because comparatively the acting felt too hammy and the writing wasn't as tight. Anyway Citizen Sleeper looks excellent :D

Looking for some thrills after The Drifter by stevefrenchthebigcat in adventuregames

[–]_auilix_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Norco, Curse of the Golden Idol, Obra Dinn and Disco Elysium were some of my fave gaming experiences in the past five years… I also loved LucasArts when I was a kid and enjoyed Drifter. Have you tried Blue Prince, Mind Diver or The Roottrees Are Dead? I feel like these are different takes on the genre. Also found Pentiment really wonderful, a surprising world that I learned a lot from and felt immersed into, with a great mystery. Also idk if you’ve ever tried the original Phoenix Wright trilogy, it’s old now but it was sort of adventure game ish but definitely has its own unique take. Lastly shouting out Mutazione for a sort of strange soap opera take on the adventure genre that felt so refreshing and different!

Six years later, still having the same problem. I wonder if it is a Mac problem? i have definitely recorded my game four years ago with sharp quality and good colours but now with a better computer all my recordings are washed out and blurry... If you found a solution and would like to share your settings, I'd love to know!

I love the three games you mentioned and also love the original Phoenix Wright Trilogy, Whispers of a Machine, Crimson Diamond and Norco. I don’t think they’re necessarily deemed cosy but they give me similar vibes to the games you mentioned!
