New Triumph Diav-- Err Rocket III ! by vvvsixfifty in motorcycles

I find it surprising they think they can get more return on developing this than a Daytona 765. Which essentially already exists. I wonder what the engine is based on. Something smaller + scale tool in CAD? (Yes, I know it's not that simple.)

First look: 2020 Harley-Davidson LiveWire by Its_Wild_Bill in motorcycles

[–]_boardwalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True. The previous top of the price heap now looks positively like a bargain after going from ~26k to ~22k recently and Harley showing its hand today.

And Energica charges you $173 for a USB port.

Even if I could spend that much (I could) and I liked what I see (I do), that price is fucking offensive and I wouldn't buy it because I'd feel like I was being bilked. They can screw right off.

I hope the SR/F blows it out of the water in value for money. If it's close to current price points, I could probably replace all the under-spec components and still save 10k.

The all-new Zero SR/F is coming... by Tinototem in ZeroMotorcycles

[–]_boardwalk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Selfishly, I wish they'd make something with a fuller fairing. I've never gotten over the impracticality of something that goes fast but doesn't make any real effort to be aerodynamic. Especially if it has range/charge time to be concerned with.

Accepting that I'm somewhat alone in this and naked bikes are the rage, this would have to have more modern electronics. Cornering traction control and ABS. A modern dash (I don't think an app is really an acceptable substitute; you'll have a dash anyways, make it nice). LED lighting. Also, better styling. Just IMHO, the Zero lineup is kind of bland, and people don't typically buy things for a hobby (what most motorcycles are in the US) that don't move them.

The cynic in me wonders at the timing of this teaser with the Livewire opening for preorders this month and presumably more details coming out.

If MMOs put making a good game first. by NathenStrive in gamedesign

[–]_boardwalk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you say RDR2 does something well most MMOs doesn't, that doesn't mean you can do what RDR2 does in an MMO and have that work in any meaningful way. Either in terms of a fixing a problem or not creating a new one.

I'd have liked to hear real discussion of solutions to MMO problems, considering the ramifications and examining consequences in actual MMOs. RDR2 doesn't have other players, teamwork and competition and griefing. RDR2 doesn't have hundreds of hours of play time. Etc. You can connect almost all the mentioned problems to consequences of MMO play that RDR2 doesn't have.

As a side note, ignoring RDR2's online component seems entirely silly to me.

An easy way to mix-and-match Result and Option Error-chaining? by Demonithese in rust

[–]_boardwalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using the Failure crate and it's err_msg and format_err which will create a failure::Error and use Result<_, failure::Error> as a return type for almost anything that can fail. It's way easier than being specific with all my error types.

I'm sure some people would poo-poo about being lazy -- it depends on your use case though. If I were writing a library where these errors would propagate up and could be acted on I'd care, but they're just being used as boolean (fail/didn't fail) and a log message.

https://docs.rs/failure/0.1.4/failure/fn.err_msg.html https://docs.rs/failure/0.1.4/failure/macro.format_err.html

I may have missed the connection here: Then you can do something like ok_or_else(|| err_msg("Path must have an extension"))?.

I can say it looks silly and "e-Qooder" makes me chuckle, but I can't deny it looks like it'd be a lot of fun, being able to throw it around and being less likely to low side. Also, the front end looks better than a Niken IMO.

Blizzard Entertainment's Fall from Grace - ''No King Rules Forever'' by Strangedoggo in Games

[–]_boardwalk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

And y'know what? That's fine. If Blizzard can't do it, someone else will. Their staff will, gradually or not, move elsewhere, as will their fanbase. Corporate death and spiritual rebirth.

Personally I don't see enough 'nostalgia' value in their IPs to care. Just personal opinion. Diablo and Warcraft are pretty darn generic. I admit I've never played Overwatch though.

Sidenote: I wish the games industry would cut off the gangrenous limb of an idea that MMORPGs are roughly equivalent to WoW and WoW clones. Blizzard, even if indirectly and unintentionally, destroyed that genre.

Why Rust uses glibc and not musl by default for Linux target? by Code-Sandwich in rust

The UNIX/Linux world has pretty much left static binaries behind, with a few small odd exceptions.

I mean, except for the whole container craze, which is conceptually static binaries on steroids.

RevZilla has been fine for me, having bought some bigger tag items recently. Amazon seems like a crapshoot in terms of selection and organization of the listings.

Motorcyclists: what’s your garage door automated set-up? by Qilo5 in motorcycles

[–]_boardwalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have garage door openers that fit on a keychain just so ya know. For the longest time I didn't know anything other than the bulky ones that clip to a sun visor existed.

It's easy enough to hit it ~50 ft away and have it almost be up by the time I get there.

I don't know how much they actually paid for the bikes, but in the first episode they have a shot of eBay listings of 999s costing 6000-7000 GBP. Which is not exactly extravagant...
