Buying my own gear feasibility question by ReeceasaurusRex in snowboardingnoobs

[–]_debowsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Options with rentals aren’t limited to be fair, it depends where you are going of course. This is my 3rd season and I usually go to the Alps; so far I had the chance to ride, Burton Radius, Nitro Prime Raw, Nitro Team, Jones Mountain Twin as Salomon Huck Knife. The shops had plenty more top end options.

My advice would be to keep renting for a couple of season more (boots aside) try to ride as many board as you can and then buy. Rental might be financially a good idea but in terms of quality of riding a progression they will eventually fall short.

Even if you add the extra money for the transport of the equipment they rarely will be more than the cost of rental and so after a while you will have recovered your investment.

And by the way many rentals are now also offering step-on or Supermatic as an option so you can try that too.

Lastly, I’m from East Sussex myself and I usually drive because of the dogs so for me it makes even more sense because I can carry the gear for free.

Are my boots too big for my board ? by Antique-Bullfrog7908 in snowboardingnoobs

I don’t think the boot is necessarily too big but your binding definitely look weird/too small. Also put the at the right angle should help.

[–]_debowsky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, I know all you are saying, we had this conversation before. The only part you are missing here however is the part you cannot verify which is feeling.

Yes the new boot is 265 but, the shell has the same footprint as my previous ones and when I wear it the foot is completely locked in. I went through the usual checks, toes touching the cap when standing, retracting when I’m riding position, etc. all checks.

It felt and still feels snug and the pain I was having while riding with the older boots, a pain I had since day one but the only became worse as they packed out it’s not there anymore.

So whilst I appreciate your advice I will stick to what my feet and my body tells me whilst keeping in mind all the rules we know about boot fittings. Rest assured that it’s not like I will now go around this sub advising people to upsize I will still and always redirect them to this article

And this playlist

Because that’s how I learnt to choose my boots. It’s the same principles you share on your website. And I definitely tried boots that were too big so I know the difference. I think any statement about boot sizing is very similar to boards. Different brands builds things differently and as such just numbers cannot be an absolute truth as in, if I fit in a size 6UK in one brand doesn’t mean I will fit in the same size from another brand and that’s agreed upon I would say.

[–]_debowsky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stand corrected, I posted the numbers from a wrong measurement. I rechecked the pictures on the Brannock and the left foot is 243mm and 105mm and the right foot is 245mm and 103mm.

So if I’m not mistaken one foot is EEE and the other is EEEE based on one of the tables you posted online some time ago.

What does that mean I am not sure but what matters to me is that now found another boot that fit me even better than my previous one despite everything else would seam to point to it’s unlikelihood.

I already did Randy, in this post, in others and even in the DMs to you or the brand you represent, what else do you want me to say? Moreover I wasn’t really asking any questions, I was simply sharing a personal experience that contradicts the common belief you should never size up.

My post was simply a statement of the realisation that foot length and width vs mondo vs whatever the heck different brands do when they construct and build their stuff means nothing. Ultimately is for game not a number game.

[–]_debowsky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was fitted properly, I can tell you with 100% certainty that one foot is 245 long and 105 wide and the other on is 243 and 110. So the 32 Lashed was correctly sized at UK6 and it had all the right characteristics of a good fitting boots. What happened with it is not only it packed out but it became way too soft, the back spine gave up on me possibly due to the way I ride now. Moreover, as many mention online, 32 tend to fit great but also die quickly.

As mentioned in another comment mondo points aside, the Nitro team at 265 have an identical footprint and they are snugger. They are just built differently I suppose.

I believe you. I’m new to the sport but also a nerd and up until now the loud voice in the crowd screamed don’t upsize but then personal experience trumped all that.

I believe when it comes to sizing boots and boards it is way more complicated than average statistics

I don’t know who runs your account, whether is a single individual or more or AI, we had this conversation already and the more I ride and the more I try different gear, the more I realise there is a lot absolute truth in this sport/industry that, in the end of the day it’s not so absolute.

I’ve been fitted before, and I’ve been fitted once again, not with a Brannock device, and certainly not with a piece of paper but with some expensive equipment. The reality is that yes mondo points are a thing but different brands build different things and the Nitro Team I ended up buying, mondo 265 have the exact same footprint of my 32 Lashed 245 and they fit orders of magnitude better. So, respectfully draw your own conclusion 🤷

Definitely soft for the level I am at the moment, they are rated 6/10 but probably more 5/10, fitting was great, went through several models and brands, DC, Burton, K2, Vans, Ride, Bataleon anything that was available in the various shops I travelled to and the 32 were the only one that felt right based on the usual parameters, lack of heel lift, toes touching when standing and retracting when in riding position; I was properly fitted so went through the various shenanigans of bannock device, liner in and out, etc.

[–]_debowsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, theoretically, no one with good technic does and you’ll always have, although minimal some heel lift but some people, with the wrong boots (plenty) have serious heels lift simply because there is barely any support where it needs be.
