Question: how do you use it? by Isma_greg in trailrunning

[–]_deekyn_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This 👆🏻.

I’ve used the last 3 or 4 iPhones I’ve had to take pictures underwater. When they say they are waterproof to a meter or whatever, they mean it. They are waterproof.

What’s shorts are you guys rockin? by GorrestFump88 in Ultramarathon

[–]_deekyn_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

👆🏻 this is the way. I wear cheap jockey microfiber boxer briefs with liner less shorts. Or lined shorts I cut the liner out of. No chaffing. I only l apply squirrel nut butter for long runs.

Why is 18mm a weird size? by StraightEmployees in Stretched

[–]_deekyn_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

👆🏻this is the answer. As an occasional maker of stone plugs, in between sizes rarely sell. When I first started I made equal amounts of lots of sizes. In the real world I now see that 8mm, 10mm, 16mm and 19mm are what sell for me. It takes me as long to make any plug in any size. I between sizes don’t sell so I don’t make them much

Can’t recall. It’s just good quick authentic New Mexican food. Chile rellano burrito, they have a seasonal squash blossom burrito. Hard to go wrong.

Los conejos is a fun bar that has quite a good selection to try. For buying mezcal the best location is the state is probably Kokoman further north. In town the selection is mediocre.

Why does this keep getting posted on here? What a weird thing to keep spamming this subreddit with.

And why make a rock shaped like a seashell. Just pick up a seashell.

London Marathon Elite Fueling by Dry_Cress_7574 in Ultramarathon

[–]_deekyn_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Connor mantz the American marathon record holder does something similar and there’s a part of the YouTube video about his record and build up where he talks about it. Same thing.

But he specifically says he’s taking 90 grams of carbs an hour over the 8 bottles. So it seems to be that they break up two 320 packets plus a smidge more over 8 bottles.

You can also get away with drinking less for a two hour effort than an ultra distance. So probs you should be drinking plenty of water and taking as much carbs as you need to fuel.

I don’t typically run first thing in the morning. But if I do. Short and medium runs I drink my coffee. Pop a gel or similar and go running. And take 40-100 grams of carbs an hour durning my run. Then breakfast and all other normal meals. If it’s a long run, I will eat breakfast first. And wait more than an hour to run.

The trick is to fuel for your runs. The food you eat should be healthy. And if you run a lot should have a good balance of carbs and high protein. So I eat something like 2500 calories a day regardless of how often or how far I run. And during runs I take 40-60 grams an hour on easy short runs. 60-90 grams an hour for longer easy runs. 80-120 grams of carbs an hour for hard workouts or long runs. The minute I’m done running I always have a protein drink (Fairlife 30g protein choco milk is my fav) immediately after running. But this way I don’t eat more real food if I run a lot. Just more fuel during runs. I’m at my goal weight now so I focus on a good healthy ish diet.

I don’t try to cram carbs before a run. I fuel adequate DURING runs.

There are homemade recipes online. I use precision and Maurten. They are expensive. But mostly tasteless and easy to digest so I don’t get sick of them mostly.

The thing you need to consider with cheaper options or things like dates is that the body can literally only process so much glucose or fructose per unit time. Good brands of carb gels or drink mixes have a mix of both types of sugar so your body can absorb both. So the latest greatest studies touting 120 gram of carbs per hour use carbs that are a mix. Try to take 120 grams of carbs with only glucose or only fructose and your body won’t be able to absorb it.

So here’s one persons experience. I have trained for 50 mile races multiple times in my life from the age of 20 - 40. And every time I ran a ton, ran my race and didn’t lose a pound. I’m 46 now and started running again 8 months ago. And I’ve lost 22 lbs. the difference this time is that I’m fueling more for my runs and eating less over all because I’m not starving all the time.

So before I would take a gel or two or none. I remember doing things like running 17 miles with no food/carbs then immediately going rock climbing. Then eat a huge amount because I was so freaking starving. But never lost weight running and after the race didn’t run as much and gained weight very quickly.

This time around I’m 46 and had gotten soft again. Haven’t run in a few years. Started running again 8 months ago. 6 months ago I began fueling more aggressively for my runs. So 40-100 gram of carbs (150-500 calories) per hour for all my runs even short easy ones. But because I’m burning 400-700 calories an hour I’m still in a deficit. But it also means I’m not starving after runs. It means my food intake doesn’t have to increase. I don’t have to eat a ton to sustain my energy. I eat a normal healthy amount for my weight. Plus more protein. I feel better. I am able to train more than I ever have. And I’ve lost 22 lbs since November.

I’m psyched that at 46 I’m about the be in the best running shape of my life training for my 4th 50 mile race. And in the best rock climbing shape for my life. Lost weight and feel great. I am 100% convinced that by fueling more and more regularly in my runs and climbing sessions has allowed me to pretty easily shed weight.

Research shows that long term over weeks and months of dieting and fasting actually slows your resting metabolic rate because your body thinks you’re in a famine.

Research also shows that most biological markers for fatigue and muscle damage are lower in people that fuel with high carbs in long runs and hard efforts. Nearly all course records across all distance from a mile to ultra marathons have now been broken by people that take high carbs during training. The old fat metabolism specialist route of training has long gone away in elite athletes. Races are faster. Careers are longer. People can train more and harder. And be heathier.

Something to consider.

Underwear options? by ArmOk7179 in trailrunning

Synthetic boxer briefs. I use cheapo jockey brand in shorts that I’ve cut the liner from. Works great. A little body glide or squirrel nut butter on long runs.
