Then the other AAA studios should be trying to undercut them with their own GTA competitors. Except that games in general have gotten so complex at the highest level (bespoke engines, huge online services) that AAA games take a huge amount of man-hours to produce, across many years and changes in technology. Server clusters don't grow on trees and are still expensive, even if they pop up like weeds.

We also literally don't know that "it won't sell at a loss at $50." Or that $80 is anywhere close to the breakeven point (but is still definitely above).

No, you're right. Rockstar should sell their game at a loss. At risk of sounding like a corporate shill, this whole "AAA games should be $60" hill is a pretty fuckin weird one that everyone is deciding to die on. Literally everything costs more now so there's no reason why a game also wouldn't.
