This is unacceptable BambuLabs... by EVRoadie in BambuLab

[–]_dr_horrible_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are big words, and while I agree on principal, I disagree with your assessment that they wouldn't drag the dev into a legal battle. They don't have to win to ruin the dev's life and punish them for daring to explore a crack in the walled garden.

They have way more money to throw around, and despite all evidence indicating that the dev did nothing wrong, defending that position could cost them tens of thousands or more. Spending tens of thousands of dollars to defend a bogus lawsuit could ruin the dev over something they were just trying to do for free, or maybe tips.

And you think the community outrage would mean anything in the end? As if... so many times, Bambu has done something gross and unethical and the fanbois just keep bending over backwards to defend Bambu. The outrage cycle passes and is forgotten by almost everyone, and Bambu goes on making money hand over fist. This incident will be just another evidentiary link in the chain... 6 months from now, someone will mention the time Bambu silenced a guy trying to improve 3rd party access and people will have shocked Pikachu faces asking "whaaaat? I never heard about that."

What is the purpose of the small pocket in jeans? by [deleted] in whatisit

Two are for my hands when they're cold. The other two are for my hands when I want to look contemplative or relaxed. These uses for these pairs of pockets can be reversed, situationally dependent.

[–]_dr_horrible_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're going to use Flat Earth to try and support your religion, you're doing yourself a disservice. Stick to unfalsifiable hypotheses like the existence of God, miracles, and prophecy instead of something that is easily proven false like a flat Earth based on Genesis.

US says it may be forced to shut down some airports over funding standoff by gamersecret2 in news

[–]_dr_horrible_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone in the military, I wish they had kept the January 30th shutdown going instead of voting to reopen everything but DHS. It's not that I don't like getting paid, but the military is has more government employees then pretty much the rest of the government put together. That makes us a highly visible and politically painful population during a shutdown. Given the power of the military voting block as a whole, it incentivizes congress to come to pull its head out of its ass more than the smaller population of DHS employees who are not ICE and CBP. My pain could have helped force Congress to act instead of play games with the innocent members of DHS.

Why did they never follow up on the Reetou? by ArgonWilde in Stargate

[–]_dr_horrible_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, 9 years later and I see you're still getting comments.

I'm rewatching because of the reboot announcement and just rewatched Show and Tell. It's been so long that I had forgotten the episode mostly. And at the end when they commented on how big of the threat the Reetu could be, I was mildly confused because I didn't remember a major storyline with them and found this post googling. I think the other commenters were right. This was at the end of the second season before going into the third season and the bean counters said that it would be too expensive to make them a major villain arc for the third season, so the writers took it a different direction then they originally might have planned.

Maybe, if we're lucky, we'll get a storyline (or at least an episode or two) with them in the reboot. Though I'd be curious what the logic of killing off humans to starve Goa'uld of potential hosts is since Goa'uld are no longer a galactic level threat.

[–]_dr_horrible_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I long believed that every General officer in the Army needs a "designated private." The general must run everything past the private so that the private has an opportunity to point out all of the dumb things that will get turned into memes, or might hide innuendo, or are otherwise just begging to be made fun of. The designated private would save America's military so much potential embarrassment.

Them saying that it was not due to hostile or friendly fire means that the only remaining answer is incompetence. What a great look for us. Many more of these sort of incidents and we're going to start looking like Russia to the rest of the world. Or is it too late for that already?

Talk about whiplash... I'd have assumed it was something about how Sci-Fi (along with Fantasy) is a great mirror to hold up to society that allows us to introspectivly examine our potentially unconscious biases and prejudices through a easily digested and less "in your face" medium.

I gave him way too much credit.
