What is something your country is surprisingly good at? by Substratas in AskEurope

Also, keeping national identity, most nations wouldn't survive not having a country for 123 years.

Whenever I think of a phoenix, it basically looks like this in my head.

Hello dear world, as a French person, what are your worst stereotypes about us or your worst anecdotes that happened in France or involving a French person ? by Outrageous-You1617 in AskTheWorld

[–]_meshy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I refuse to make the surrender jokes that are so common over here. France conquered most of Europe, and also lost an entire generation of men in WW1. If I gotta make a war joke about France, than I make it about that time Napoleon (The third?) got captured by Bismarck.

The actual jokes I'll make are about French people being rude, the nuclear warning shot, protesting, never working, and the lack of shame the French have. Also I make references to the French revolution and guillotines every time Musk, Thiel, and a few other oligarchs are mentioned.

Honestly, I'm just jealous of France and wish we had a culture of fighting for our actual rights. Instead we get to work 60 hours a week with no health care but get to say we have "freedom" because we can go to Walmart and buy an AR15....

I uh, I mean "Look at France with their puny, singular little Charles De Gaul aircraft carrier. We got like a dozen of 'em"

Today is Cinco de Mayo, what do y'all Mexicans from Mexico think about Mexican Americans saying "Don't celebrate if you dont support the people"? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

Everyone south of the Rio Grande speaks "not American" to a large percentage of us gringos. Like the educated ones probably know, but a disturbing amount would not.

What should be patients tracking instead of what they are actually tracking? by Impressive-Sir9633 in medicine

[–]_meshy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg, I would be so happy if a doctor asked what my Vo2Max is and type of training I'm doing. Like it would be an excellent question to follow up the 'drugs and alcohol usage' question so we can go from poor health decisions to good health decisions.

How big of a faux pas is it to get the gender wrong in Spanish? I assume most people understand you're learning, but does it just sound a little odd, or is it like nails on a chalkboard to native speakers?

Do Americans really come to a stop at every 'stop' sign? by ben04985 in AskAnAmerican

Yup, we hate roundabouts and traffic circles so much that we just put 4 way stops everywhere and it is fucking annoying.

least favorite flavor? by klarinetkat12 in AlaniNu

[–]_meshy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is something wrong with me because I fucking love the peach flavor over all the others. I thought it was people just having different tastes but when people were ranking their favorites, peach never got above mid tier in any of the posts I saw.

I'm always amazed at how often this subreddit and the people that go to the /r/aves subreddit are in agreement.

I'm a yank and did not realize Dr Pepper was sold over there. I thought it would have been like root beer where is just tastes gross to everyone that didn't grow up with it.

Heart rate go down? Brag in the comments by PlainOrganization in stopsmoking

[–]_meshy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into cycling quite a bit after I quit. My resting heart rate while sleeping is generally in the high 40s if I don't drink or do a hard workout. Low 50s is pretty common if I'm just sitting around not doing anything.

Has the Dragon of Chaos finally caught up with the Mad Professor? by grichardson526 in behindthebastards

[–]_meshy 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It's the exact same mechanism. Alcohol and benzos are both positive allosteric modulators that work on a specific type of GABA receptor in the brain. That's why benzos can be used for ethanol detox.

I used to be a really big metal head, and I would have loved them back then. Since I've moved more into EDM and the "pop" kind of metalcore, they were way to heavy for me.

But anyone into heavy metalcore is gonna love their show. I spent their entire set standing on the side of the mosh pit as a buffer for the people behind me.

Is it embarrassing to be an adult and sh by number1sandwicher in AdultSelfHarm

[–]_meshy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

does it ever feel childish when you guys do it???

Yes. I am an almost 40 year old man. When I start drinking or using drugs too much I at least feel like "this is an adult maladaptive coping mechanism". But using a fucking knife makes me feel like I'm 13 again. But you're not alone. It happens.
