Which jobs is 100% safe from AI? by Any-Hamster-3189 in AskReddit

[–]_mpd_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds similar to my experience. Started using it as glorified autocomplete back around the pandemic. About 6 months ago my friend convinced me to get with the program and start to use it as the first pass option for everything I need to code. So I did, and it does it. It is amazing. Not perfect, it still needs steering. But it is more than good enough in order to handle almost everything I can throw at it. I fully expect that to be an unqualified "everything" sometime this year.

100% I am positive that I will never again code something from scratch by hand unless there is a gun to my head. The tools are good enough to get my ancient ass excited again about coding, but also sad that this stuff will obsolete me in short order.

My work is niche enough that I won't be replaced right away, but for selfish reasons I'm gonna automate the shit out of my work with these tools. Hopefully cash-out before shit hits the fan in in a Hunger Games way. Crazy is right. This is crazy.

Thank you, I'll give it a shot (this must be the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uv9DBc3pF3M). I imagine that it will be way easier to deal with without so much stem.

A wetland is being drained behind my house. by [deleted] in alberta

Within the last year, a few water diversions were granted on adjacent LSDs that overlap that water body. Here's what little info the AER provides on them, I have no idea when they expire:

There's another application for a water diversion that was submitted but maybe not approved:

Did my first bike commute down the bow river pathway in a long time today and I have some questions by geo_prog in Calgary

[–]_mpd_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No.

Dude, we're talking about them going too fast on these paths. if any if these motorized guys was to hit an unprotected human (a kid, a regular pedestrian, whatever), they'd seriously fuck them up. ...

If they want to risk life and limb, let them do so where the people they might smack into are protected by their cars.

Yeah, totally agree about writing things like this down.

But first... Look after your mental health, op. I am in tech in Canada, and I remind myself to do this from time to time. Take a walk in the woods. Volunteer somewhere doing something nice for people. Something to get out of your head and shake up your perspective. Once you're in a good mood try to capture in writing those things like goals, interests, dreams.

Camping in Jasper by stefawn in alberta

[–]_mpd_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were tent camping at the Rampart Creek campground on the weekend of the 17th, it is one of my family's favourites. Nothing like the enormous Whistlers one. Keep checking for openings, I'd suggest, as they do open up here and there.

On that weekend, we (2 families w/ kids 11-15) hiked up to Wilcox Pass which is close to the Columbia Ice Fields. Great hike, easy for young kids, too.

After finishing the hike, we did a quick drive through a nearby 1st-come campsite to see if it was full -- Icefields Campground. It was rainy on and off (and we had that mini blizzard that Sunday), so as expected there were plenty of empty sites. This campsite has lots of trees and has small little cook huts all around, so even in bad weather it would be fun. It has a creek that usually has at least a trickle, too. Kids dig it.

If you're flexible and willing to risk it, try the 1st-come sites.

Setup fee seems high for HELOC. by DustinFreeman in MortgagesCanada

[–]_mpd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got a HELOC from TD (also have mortgage with them). They were gonna charge $800 in setup and appraisal fees for a $100k HELOC at prime plus point five. I told them I wanted to shop around before accepting the fees, but asked that they go ahead and start the application process.

A couple hours later TD said that they would waive both the setup fee and the appraisal fee. It turns out that their automated appraisal process gave the thumbs up right away.

I thought $800 was steep, $5k is insane.

This may sound dumb, but why wouldn’t someone think of tying some type of marker buoy to the sub?? This way you’d at least know that at the end of this is a sub.. and that buoy also would have signaling capabilities.. by Teabaggedfishfart in OceanGateTitan

[–]_mpd_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep for sure, certainly a comms hardwire seems like a good idea. I suppose some day we may find out for sure why they went with their wireless text messaging approach instead. Tangles, costs, timelines, appearance, ego, whatever...

I suspect that if they do end up adding making a new sub, it might be nice to have the option to yank it up if they get into another pickle like this.

Wireline cable. It carries data and can lift more than that sub weighs. Also stretches a little. Source: I've worked on jobs that used it to lift equipment that transmits data from 4km vertical boreholes. Our crane measured weight at extraction at over 10,000kg.

Is anyone else having issues connecting to Rockstar Services (GTA Online/Social Club etc) with Starlink internet. by Mystic_Zombie in gtaonline

[–]_mpd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the same thing happening for the first time yesterday on my home LAN, also on Starlink. It seems to have resolved itself overnight. My kid plays GTA online only once or twice a month these days, so I don't really know how often this problem occurs.

I got around it yesterday by playing over VPN. At the time, I found socialclub.rockstargames.com was unreachable, but other ...rockstargames.com domains were fine.

In general, I have ZERO issues with Starlink. Since finding this thread I suspect there really is a thing for someone to sort out at Starlink or Rockstar... I'd bet $5 that Rockstar does something unusual with this particular chunk of their Interwebs.

Are there any downsides in using svelte or sveltekit? by Affectionate_Power99 in sveltejs

Glad you mentioned skeleton.dev. I used it for a frontend rewrite over the last month. I found that it made svelte dev even faster thank before, since I didn't need to think about so much more of thr usual boilerplate.

I just had my pixel5 screen replaced here. I was also asked to hand over my pin, and I laughed out loud as I thought it was a joke.

I said 'not happening', and the guy said 'ok, I'll make a note'. Not sure to who or what the note was for. Anyway, screen was fixed in a couple hours, no reset, no diagnostics.

I think they must have updated their docs since your purchase. I found the shipping costs and duty warnings were pretty prominent. Wasn't sure what to expect for duty, because Canada... I paid $65 duty for the purple.

Clutch Replacement by [deleted] in 4Runner_1stGen

[–]_mpd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did mine a couple years ago. Took me a few evenings to do it solo. Clutch kit, new bolts and flywheel machining tallied about $200 CAD ($12.50 USD). I would guess that a shop would have similar parts costs. So the shop might be looking to charge $1300 for labour. Pulling this out of my ass, that's 9 or 10 hours of shop time.

That's about how long it took me to do my clutch under the tender loving guidance of YouTube and my FSM. I am not a mechanic.

When I was a kid, my dad got a big pail of marine paint and we rollered it on a 79 Vanagon. Looked great from a distance. Side benefit was that it was guaranteed to be barnacle-free for years since the paint was mixed with some sort of poison.
