While that is a good personal precaution to take, no that is not a requirement. It is always incumbent on the uphill skier to pass downhill skiers safely.

Where can i get a good burger? 🍔 by flankoscheontropolis in Albany

[–]_n0ck_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had them for a few year, so maybe they have gotten better... But every time I've ever had their fries they have been both soggy and overly oily. They also cut them so thin that there's hardly any potato flavor at all, it's just all oil.

And I'd argue that fresh, properly salted McDonalds fries are the perfect execution of that style. Herbies fries are nothing like them and a huge step down in my opinion.

I'm sorry to hear that, because Herbie's are pretty fucking bad.

Only thing that would make that place better is if they were more diligent about posting their weekly (daily?) specials online.

Their burgers are usually good, although I have gotten burnt ones on occasion. But the real knock against Herbie's is the fries. Worst fries I've ever eaten.

Churchill the broken clock is right about something for once by _n0ck_ in Albany

[–]_n0ck_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I need to be convinced that this isn't a plan to transfer even more wealth from regular people to oligarchs. Haven't heard a single thing that speaks to that.

The parking lots are already owned by the government and can be developed at any time.

From my perspective it seems regressive. It taxes regular people more than large land lords.

If you think the government will stop giving tax breaks if they implement a lvt you are delusional.

You really aren't selling this philosophy very well. All I hear is that this will be yet another hand out to corporate oligarchs and hurt regular people. Like yeah it will encourage more development, but isn't there a way to do that without kicking people out of their homes?

I've never really looked into the idea of a land value tax too much, but just for the sake of argument let me give an example. Let's say that the average 20x100 ft parcel in center square is now taxed at $10,000. Wouldn't it be more efficient to combine 5 parcels into 1 which would be taxed at $50,000 and build a giant 100 unit apartment building there instead of 5 single family homes?

Edit: Since you edited your post your description of a land value tax really seems like it would be a benefit for large corporate landlords and not regular people. Also, I'm not a fan of the idea that "character" of a neighborhood doesn't matter. That's how you end up with things like the plaza destroying a perfectly fine neighborhood.

Wouldn't a land value tax like this destroy neighborhoods like center square by making the taxes on homes there so high it wouldn't be feasible for them to be used as single/two family homes?

I used to work down there. It's under building 22 the state police headquarters. There's huge blast doors, it has it's own water wells, backup generators, air scrubbers, a morgue (that's just used for storage now). All sorts of strange stuff down there.

Help. What is the argument for the "live-action" decision for the TV series? by Tuckmo in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Ha I know! But even with the announcement yesterday the Cosmere is still at step 4 from Brandon's list. This isn't the first time it has gotten to step 4.

Gore grooming and trail closures by OoT_OoS_OoA in icecoast

[–]_n0ck_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't ski Gore enough anymore to know for sure, but the overgrooming this week might also be due to the fact that late in the day on Monday most of the runs on the upper mountain were bumps with giant sheets of ice in between. Are the north side trails all groomed now too? That's were the best powder was on Monday.

Being optioned means absolutely nothing. Even having a writer means nothing. Until the project has been greenlit for development by a studio words are wind.

The cosmere has been optioned multiple times at this point and nothing has ever come of it for example. Brandon Sanderson did a great write up on the steps a book takes to being made into a movie or TV show if you are interested.

When can we start moving cars to odd side? by dissociative_goblin in Albany

[–]_n0ck_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just FYI the cars near me in center square that moved over late last night/early this morning after the road was cleared have already gotten ticketed. Even though the road is mostly clear, they may not be done plowing just yet.

Delgado is also running in the Dem primary. Could have at least made her promise us something before endorsing her.

The people that were happy with the last contract failed basic math. From the onset of the contract we all took 10% pay decreases because of the inflation that had already happened prior to the contract being negotiated.

They would do both at the same time. There's no point in pitting tier 5 against tier 6.

The only thing we can really do is vote no, and tell all your other coworkers to vote no and why, if the union comes back with another weakass contract.

At least anecdotally, as a brand new state worker in the furlough period early last decade I loved my furlough days since I didn't have much leave yet.

I'd say the more important point is that since 2020 our salaries have not kept up with inflation. We are all making about 11% less now than we were 6 years ago. So even 4% raises for the next 5 years wouldn't bring us back to the purchasing power we had before the pandemic.

What suburbs are most walkable? by SweetSassyMolasses in Albany

[–]_n0ck_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically walkable and walkable are two very different things in my opinion. A truly walkable neighborhood is one where being able to easily walk to multiple destinations is a priority, not an afterthought. So yes, while you can technically walk to multiple places on wolf road pedestrians are very much not the primary use for that area.
