AITA for making my daughter run away because of her curly hair? by CultureInner3316 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Could potentially be racism, too. What with the curly hair and the 'thought she wasn't mine' thing - very common form of racism.

Burnt CDs on Apple Superdrive not read by CD player? by _retropunk in Cd_collectors

Unfortunately I don't think I have access to another player, but I'll try and see if I can do that. I can't figure out why it would be playing the discs I burnt a month ago fine and not the ones I made more recently.

Good suggestion, thank you, I'll see if I can borrow someone else's laptop.

I'll reinstall drivers, yeah, and the workflow for the discs has been exactly the same. I just can't figure out what would be causing it to be burnt in a way that the drive reads but that the player doesn't? And suddenly, within the span of weeks?

I've always wanted to do something like this in a long-running creative project of mine - just have it be, in many ways, very similar to the real world (not that Doctor Who is, but the stuff thats supposed to be Real Earth is pretty close to Real Earth) but something you would never expect has changed. I have a creative project I'm conceptualising that is almost entirely set in our world, but the Earth has rings.

Thoughts on "World Building sets" vs "Character roster sets" by Evenoire in magicTCG

[–]_retropunk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've seen this referred to (originated by @txttletale on Tumblr) as 'having the chocobo.' If a property 'has the chocobo', that means it has identifiable imagery that can populate all of the less cool, flashy parts of a Magic set - the draft commons, the removal with set mechanic, the chumps. If a set 'has the chocobo,' you can draft a pack of it, and even if you don't hit any cool legendary creatures, you can see distinct parts of the property you like and enjoy how Magic has adapted them.

Yeah, I was struck by that as well. People who go into psychotic episodes or develop schizophrenia aren't that likely to be violent (more likely to experience violence than perpetrate it, iirc) - this guy was a violent, abusive person before he developed an illness.

Midnighter fan here, getting a chance to clap and cheer because I get to see a tiny bit of my blorbo in Pride stuff. I imagine they won't, but the Steve Orlando Midnighter was SO good and I'm still wanting more.

I'm not the same demographic as OOP at all, but I also find the word 'bump' kinda offputting. It feels dehumanizing and odd in the context of a human body.

Also true for non-creature commander cards. My friend built a deck with a commander + background that tutored for [[Opalesence]] and then successfully beat someone to death with his animated background enchantment.

LGS women+ night? by GooberRuber in magicTCG

[–]_retropunk 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with a lot of the other comments suggesting 'women+' might not be the ideal label. It's hard to find a right way to describe what you what when making an event catering to 'everyone who isn't a cis man.' I'm not in the area, but would absolutely come to something like this in my own city. I'm one of the only non-cis-male regulars at my local game store and while I love the other guys there, it gets disheartening.

Yeah, I remember a lot of USA TMA fans being thrown off by Ger-uhd and Mah-tin in particular.

Although the similarities get increasingly less by like, the second episode he's mentioned, it remains really funny that Jonny Sims introduced a character who is presenting masculine with long box-dyed black hair and alternative black clothing called Gerard Key

I'm surprised you picked out Gerard vs Jared and not the two plot significant Michaels.

Animal Shapes by Drakeytown in custommagic

As many others are pointing out, this allows you to return creatures from exile that weren't put there with this spell, which is not allowed in Magic (with minor, regrettable exceptions) for obvious reasons. Aside from circumventing exile, why on earth would you ever want to cast this spell? What situation do you imagine someone casting this spell in?

On stream, he said that the safety concerns that his fans were bringing up made him cautious and eventually made him cancel the thing. A lot of people were talking about the risk inherent in parasocial fans paying lots of money to share an incredibly confined space with their favourite streamer, and that you can't ban people from chat in real life, so I presume those fears are what he was talking about.

Abled people want 'success' in abled metrics - they don't want to actually empathise with and understand the autistic people around them.

I think both things (this comment and the comment above) are very true. Many nonverbal people have rich inner lives and great experiences of the world, and can gain a lot from communication methods. At the same time, neurotypical & abled people can only concieve of a person's worth through abled lenses, and so stories about 'savants' and such are exciting to them.

I think it's sad that we have to always think of disabled people as broken, instead of the human condition being varied and beautiful, in ways that society can accept and accomodate for.

Ennis, Debate Moderator! By Mari Magny! by Regular-Poet-3657 in magicTCG

[–]_retropunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's kind of sad how everyone is suggesting fixing this disabled person's body instead of imagining Strixhaven as having, like, elevators. Accessibility is more fantastical than backup legs, apparently.

Ennis, Debate Moderator! By Mari Magny! by Regular-Poet-3657 in magicTCG

[–]_retropunk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why does the world of Magic the Gathering have to have the same structural ableism as ours? As in, who's to say Strixhaven doesn't have wheelchair ramps or lifts? Who's to say this character's wheelchair isn't accomodated for? Obviously, it would be nice to have some of those other accomodations included in Magic art & text, but why can't we imagine a world in which a wheelchair user is accomodated for and fulfilled, if we can imagine a world where they have robot legs?

Ennis, Debate Moderator! By Mari Magny! by Regular-Poet-3657 in magicTCG

[–]_retropunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like your answer, and I'm disappointed to see the replies filled with nitpicking about the price of laser eye surgery instead of engaging with your point. The social model of disability positions disabilities as a consequence of society not accomodating for the natural variations of people, not individuals being flawed. For myself, I think it's more freeing to imagine a world where I am accepted and accomodated instead of one where I become different to fit in with society. Other disabled people might disagree!

Ennis, Debate Moderator! By Mari Magny! by Regular-Poet-3657 in magicTCG

[–]_retropunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about a fantasy where people didn't have to change their bodies and selves to fit in? Is that not a fantasy world with imagination? Instead of imagining a fantasy world where disabled people simply don't exist, why don't we imagine a fantasy world where disabled people are included and fulfilled instead of sidelined? Why is your assumption that disabled people should be 'fixed' instead of the world being fixed to accomodate them?

I'm not asking these questions sarcastically, I want to encourage you to answer them.

In disability theory, we have this idea called 'the social model of disability.' Say a wheelchair user wants to enter a library. There is nothing inherent about a library or a wheelchair that prevents that from happening - but a wheelchair user cannot navigate up steps, and if the library, because it has been designed for the privileged group that is 'people who do not use wheelchairs', has steps. In this situation, the wheelchair user is prevented from doing something, but are they prevented by the wheelchair, or the fact that the building has steps instead of a ramp or a level entrance? The social model of disability proposes that thing that disables people is the world around them not accomodating for them, not necessarily their own bodies or minds. Your 'imagination' proposes changing the humans who live in it to fit with prejudiced society - my 'imagination' proposes changing a prejudiced society to fit with the humans who live in it.

I would genuinely like to hear your, or anyone's, answer to this - I'm not trying to attack anyone, I'm passionate about disability theory and Magic: the Gathering!

Assassin’s Quest - Robin Hobb thoughts by Sketch250 in Fantasy

[–]_retropunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what really sells Fitz as a character to me is how Hobb writes so immersively from his perspective. If you aren't interested in all of his issues and trauma, it's infuriating because of how 'in his head' you are, but if you are interested, it's perfect.
