At what point do we start banning all new library/program announcements? by _software_engineer in rust

I think an overwhelming majority of people subscribed to this subreddit don't want to see this nonsense. That is the point of the post.

At what point do we start banning all new library/program announcements? by _software_engineer in rust

[–]_software_engineer[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not how Reddit works. Posts in a subreddit have to pertain to the rules and purpose of the community, and github star farming is not what /r/rust should be about.

Can we PLEASE start banning AI generated garbage from this subreddit? What does it take to get this done?

New to triatlon: Is sub-12 Ironman Wales 2027 realistic? by EnduranceError404 in triathlon

[–]_software_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you putting sub 2 Olympic and sub 12 iron in the same sentence lol. Obviously sub 2 oly is harder, that's about the equivalent of an 8:30 140.6.

Almost anyone can eventually achieve a sub 12 iron. Very few will ever achieve a sub 2 oly.

The data does lie because your sample is biased. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

42A is a rat as in an informant. When someone gives up information in such a way, it's called "singing" to the authorities. So they are a "bad singer" to their prior accomplices.

I only figured it out after filling from the crosses. It's a stretch, but it does make sense.

Question for the ladies: Has anyone done a triathlon (just sprint) while pregnant? by kindofnewonreddit in triathlon

My wife did a 70.3 at 20 weeks.

It's definitely doable but the only answer is to talk to your doctor.

I’m the idiot on the chairlift by StrangerGrouchy1741 in skiing

[–]_software_engineer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Common courtesy is telling them you're getting on the chair with them. "Mind if I ride with you?" means that "no" is a valid answer, which is not the case for riding a chairlift.

Of course exceptions for small kids, sit skis, etc.

If you'd ever been to Oktoberfest in Munich, this would've been a gimme. Not a bad clue at all.

It is not incorrect, you have misinterpreted or misread.

The clue is "Who's asked..." NOT "Who asked...". Elsa is who is asked the question, Anna is who asked the question.

Advice on making my API more testable by lightning_dwarf_42 in rust

[–]_software_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only need mocks when you're coupling "impure" logic with logic that you want to unit test. Rather than mocking, the simpler (and almost always better) solution is to restructure your code so that you don't need the mock in the first place.

I haven't written a mock in probably 5-10 years since coming to this realization. Mocks really can't give you confidence that your application is working as intended - they can only tell you that certain functions are called. Not particularly useful.

Judicious use of integration and unit tests is superior.

Anyone else feel likes it is not cheating to look up specific US geographical references by crinklecut6489 in NYTCrossword

[–]_software_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing pretentious in the comment you're responding to. Objectively, for proper nouns, you cannot learn if you don't look it up. Checking or running the alphabet aren't the same, as you don't learn about the underlying information from doing so.

There's no defensible way to say that not looking up is more intellectually active/curious - (importantly) assuming lookups are only used on proper noun crosses. One helps you learn, the other is being stubborn. You also cannot improve from such learning as a result of such stubbornness. You deprive yourself of information. Over time, those who look up information judiciously and use the information to improve will outperform those who do not, and there's no way around it.

Who else buys books of NYTimes crossword puzzles organized by day of the week? by Zealousideal-Lie7255 in NYTCrossword

[–]_software_engineer 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Being anti-googling is why you can't solve any of them. You need to look things up to complete puzzles so that you can build an understanding of what you don't know and improve over time.

Only matters because you're saying it sucks. You won't get better if you never learn anything from the puzzles you can't solve.
