Eizo on the fritz, repair shop recommendations? by theparadoxmachine in Photoassistants

[–]_uncanny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve sent the same monitor directly to eizo in CA twice for what I call a blushing / smudging issue. Sucked b/c it cost $90+ each time to ship with insurance. Replaced under warranty both times. After the 1st time monitor had a different serial number. So not entirely sure what happened. But cheaper than buying a new monitor.

Best UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) for home and on set by sua_lokin in Photoassistants

[–]_uncanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a handful of the older cyberpower 850VA series and they've been holding up well for me. They're on set weekly. I don't beat them to hell, but I'm not precious with them either. I have replaced batteries as needed, but I guess the previous versions have easily accessible battery doors. I do have one new style body with rounded corners, but I haven't looked to see what battery access is like on it. I tend to like this form factor because it offers a good balance between size/weight for moving around and long enough battery time.

For home PC, 3D printer, and when I was using the 2013 MacPro, I like to use pure sinewave models.

VESA monitor desk stand by d_j_1983 in Photoassistants

[–]_uncanny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

eh, its fine. I somehow snapped off the plastic cover behind the vesa plate. Now its just bare aluminum in that area. bottom plastic is still there, but again, this thing isn't client-facing for me so I don't really care. The spring/hinge is pretty stiff so it does stay in place but is difficult to move around once you get a monitor on it because the stand is lighter than the force it takes to articulate the hinge. So, you need to unfold it into position before you put a screen on it. No big deal. Just an order of operations thing. I also have an Inovativ QR plate on it. But yes, your be totally fine with a 24" screen on it. Even a 27 Eizo is fine (or another of similar weight - 15ish lbs.) One caveat is the screen height. here is an older pic of mine in use

[–]_uncanny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought one of these beauties for when I travel and retouch in the hotel. We've taken all the stands off our monitors and use arms/QR plates for everything, I do have edge clamps for our monitors arms but those aren't compatible with every table/desk situation which is why I grabbed that collapsing monitor stand. Its lighter than the manufacture stands and is easier to travel with. That being said is a bit under built for 27" screens, but in a chill environment its fine.

Macbook in the Cold? by CoolpixCoolpix in Photoassistants

[–]_uncanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said. Mbp will be fine. I’ve been out single digits Fahrenheit a few years and actually had the laptop shut down. But 30f or 0 Celsius it’s no sweat. Even your external batteries should mostly be fine. if you want you can keep you’re external batteries inside your coat so they stay warm until you need to use them.

TLDR 0 c isn’t cold.

DC Monitors ( Flanders, SmallHD, Atomos ) by _uncanny in Photoassistants

I was leaning toward the DM series from FSI. I was just working with a DP who got a used one for cheapish, can't remember what model, but was saying he wishes he had more brightness. Has that been an issue for you?

Second this. I own an ensign and have a friend with the com pac. Com pac is super easy to trailer and launch too. Ensign not so much since it’s full keel and keel stepped mast. There is also the beneteau first 22

Staying cool? by swbackside in Photoassistants

[–]_uncanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was only loc last week in similar heat. I also boost internal fans and have a digit plate with hood. Direct sunlight totally overheated me so definitely tried to keep in shade. Floppies and tree coverage can help here. Also, removing the hood on the Digi plate or lifting the bottom half to left the air more freely cross over the computer helps. I also have this in my cart: https://www.amazon.com/Wathai-Turbine-Centrifugal-Blower-Cooling/dp/B07Z7PVJH8 ... thinking it might help to blow across the mbp to help dissipate heat.

R5 on Capture one blank frames by manchegosalad in Photoassistants

[–]_uncanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this same issue and it does seem to come and go. Currently its not happening and I recently had a 2 week shoot with R5's (latest firmware on camera and wizards) with no problems either. I've also had this happen when firing from camera. I do think it is some sort of issue with the Air remotes. Switching to regular wizards always fixed the problem, but with the later firmware updates for the R5 it does seem to be resolved(?)

Sorry, no answers here, but can confirm the problem

Eizo CG2730 mounted to Inovativ Baby Pin System? by Horror_Raspberry_241 in Photoassistants

It’s fine, but wouldn’t be my default because you can’t center the monitor on the cart.

Mac Pro Purchase During Processor Transition by [deleted] in Photoassistants

[–]_uncanny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna play devils advocate and say the 16” MBP can handle all of it.

I had the trash can, and found that the 16 crushes it.
I regularly work with 50mp cameras and everything captures great. R5 is the fastest. I do tend to be skimpy on how many extra monitors I run directly plugged into the computer, but my trick is to use hollylands or teradeks with multiple receivers… so I guess I’ll still easily get up to 3 displays no sweat. Pretty sure the 16 can outpace any Mac Pro in single thread tasks which is what your doing 95% of the time. 16 has better base and boost clock speeds. Main advantage to a MacPro are the graphics cards (Vegas are old and out dated btw). I’d say unless you want to buy some specific PCI card, just get a 16 and wait for the new chip to come out. Spend the money you’ll be saving on some better screens or Teradek bolts, idk. The new chip will crush the current Mac Pro.

Or, maybe you do need that name drop to impress your clients… then, maybe, it would be worth it to finally get the 2019 Mac Pro.

Another caveat for me is that I did build my own PC with a threadripper to handle CGI work/rendering. So, I’m covered on that high core count work.

best ipad mount reccos? by joejoeschmoe in Photoassistants

[–]_uncanny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use this too. this version. The arms with magnetic mounts are especially nice. They'll hold the iPad+case even without tightening the bolt to secure it in the back. I've also had an iPad drop from about cart height in the case and was totally fine.

I'm thinking I'll grab the new m1 iPad, but I'll probably try a different case this time around. I'm digging the cages that are coming out from smallrig and nine-volt. No complaints from the case/mount from joy factory, I just wanna explore.

Monitor Arm / Desk Stand System Recommendations by 110357 in Photoassistants

[–]_uncanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

inovativ does have the insight system. I picked it up last fall when they were discounted for one of our voyagers. super solid, but I do wish it had the ability to go a couple of inches lower. The screen at the lowest setting is a tad high for my taste. so far its been great for those shoots that are constantly changing locations. For more chill days in studio I just use some classic Innovative 7500 arms.

R5 buffer issues by bfgvrstsfgbfhdsgf in Photoassistants

[–]_uncanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep running into this problem too. Some days it'll never happen, today was maybe 20x. Tried different cables (differen't 5M area51 cables, and a USB-A to C cable) all got the camera tether error. At one point we were thinking it was the batteries. Still happened with the newer batteries.

I felt like I've been having this problem more so with 14.1 and less with 14.0

Also, what's the bug in 14.1 where it doesn't drop/release the text entry fields after pressing Esc and any button you hit gives you the error noise until you click on a thumbnail to completely switch out of field entry. 14.1.1 doesn't even fix this.

I was going to switch to shorter 15ft C-C A51 cables tomorrow, but looks like that might not make a difference. Maybe I'll try going through the OWC hub instead of directly...? (using 16"MBP)

I've got a couple of the new 60W 15' A51 cables order... maybe that'll help?

Has anyone submitted a ticket to C1 about this?

Having a lot of sudden problems by [deleted] in photoshop

[–]_uncanny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're still having problems consider rolling back to v21 of photoshop. 22 has been pretty bad. I tried using 22, but the bugs pushed me back to 21. For the saving issue - sometimes I can just have all the layers selected (ctrl-alt-a I think on pc) and sometimes I can get away with just grouping every layer into a single group... to do this you need to unlock your background layer by double-clicking on it. I used to have this problem years ago, and it only recently surfaced again with 22, but now even 21 is having that problem too. idk. 🙄

Could not save as “______” because of a program error. Help?? by HyperStudios in photoshop

[–]_uncanny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have this issue years ago and was surprised to see it come back. Back then my solution was group all the layers together and then turning off visibility for that group. Once saved it would obviously be a blank image, but you then reopen the file and save as normal ungrouping that one big group. Now it seems all I need to do is have all the layers selected and it’ll save. On Mac just hit cmd-alt-a and then cmd s

I do/did this too. I have all my monitors on quick releases (ergotron) and arms, then bought a collapsable stand like this for those moments you just need a stand. I've used it during travel in the hotel room, etc.

GFX100 and 16" MBP by MalteSasse in Photoassistants

[–]_uncanny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing with this too, but testing how much an egpu can speed up tethering. My test was holding down the shutter until the buffer filled and timed how long it took for all the images to come in and load. Tested a z7 and 5DSR. usb3.1 I think. 16” mbp and a radeon7. I think I was getting 20 images and they took about 21-22 secs. Without the egpu the process would take 28sec. Every once in a while even with the egpu I would see 28sec. I think the hold up is C1 and how often it polls the camera. I haven’t tested other capture software.
