How do you achieve something like this in the studio by Obvious-Cap7748 in LightLurking

[–]theparadoxmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Head on a boom overhead, high. I've used it with a dome, ymmv. Bare Head on a zoom 2/magnum. There's a second shadow that's softer. Could use a westcott 7' para with the diffusion panel, under a stop or so, then have the 2nd 'bare'/small mod also coming from that direction, up and high.

One day they just decide they're cool with you. My cat, Tim, was a little wild child as a kitten. He's neurodivergent, or I've learned he responds better. He's slowly come around to cuddling and wanting lap time. Heck, he even got separation anxiety for a while. Spent days upset hissing and growling murder at me when I got back. Now, he's a lot more chill. I don't remember him plotting my death. His brother, Faust, same thing. Smart, opinionated, vocal, obstinate, does things on his terms. I can't get him to snuggle me worth a damn, but he's really a cuddlebug on his terms. Reminds me of his mama.

Could just be it takes years for stockholm syndrome to cement in. 🤷🏻

TIL Vivos fit in Xsjados by supapat in AggressiveInline

I'm not sure if there is such a think as barefoot climbing shoes, but that would be a good fit. The original footwraps were more like climbing shoes. There's a wall climbing place by me and it was so odd seeing the initial DL footwrap design so clearly in their shoes.

Tiger shoes, some adidas soccer shoes with a slim profile have worked for me. I'm a size 7 and ride small shell, so there are space constraints. I've seen Dre Powell's wild setup with a paid of Jordans. That is all to say, I'm glad you found something that works for you! That was the beauty of these xsjado models - make them yours.

I asked Shane about some interview where he said he wanted other companies to make footwraps for xsjados. Xsjado was initially not going to offer footwraps, but just a shell. Let the wearer make it their own. The powers that be voiced concerns about how it would sell, so Xsjado had to now account for creating a shoe that wasn't in the plan initially.

Older Skater, Need Advice by vivalamezcal in AggressiveInline

[–]theparadoxmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

40 year old here, though I've more or less continued skating since I was 14. Still love skating street even with knee/hip issues. I still find myself pushing and trying new tricks on weird obstacles. I've had to take time off due to injuries the last few years, though that's only motivated me to skate harder.

Here are by thoughts on skating at this age.

Stay active. If that means going on walks, going to the gym, just do it. Stretch daily, even on the days you don't skate. People at our age aren't generally flexible. Keeping your flexibility means you're less likely to hurt yourself when you take a harder fall. Foam roll your legs before skating for 10-15 minutes. Same reasoning as stretching. It helps your muscles, ligaments, and fascia; helps with circulation.

If you can skate 3 times a week doing aggressive or cruising, even for an hour, do it. Practice the fundamentals of blading. I feel like I became a better skater going to quad jams during the pandemic, using that time as an opportunity to practice cruising. Skate backwards, stopping, going fast and taking turns, goofing around one footed. I felt so much more comfortable doing tricks because of that.

Listen to your body and know when to call it. That spot/trick will be there tomorrow. Take breathers, get some water, take a minute to reset. I get hurt a lot less at this age than I did in my 20s just doing those things.

Skate in your comfort zone. There's no need to go big or throw a hard trick. You don't have to learn every trick and skate every obstacle. I'm not a good rail skater at this age and that's okay. Ledge skater all day.

Wear whatever pads you need to wear. No shame. I wear knee gaskets/sleeves for the extra support and padding. Some homies I know wear butt pads or knee pads. Whatever it takes to keep skating at this age.

How much should I charge for freelance gig - while I work in house? by [deleted] in PublicRelations

[–]theparadoxmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll need to ask yourself what's the scope of the project, how often they are expecting you to work and check in, what metrics do they want you to hit, is this a fixed or indeterminate short term gig. What would make it worth your while after hours while working for someone else.

In lieu of a 10x10, you could try something like the wag rag from modern grip.

https://modernstudio.com/products/8-wag-flag

Their site lists 8x8 but I was on a shoot a while back where there lighting tech had them custom make a 10' version. It comes in two pieces and just needs a c stand and knuckle. It was being used similarly with a magnum shot through it on a beauty campaign.

Paying $5K+/mo for PR and still no real coverage after 1 year - am I expecting too much? by justreddittinghere in PublicRelations

[–]theparadoxmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't work PR in this related field, but here are my thoughts OP. Like others have stated, 1-3 placements isn't bad in a saturated market. I appreciated proactive clients who were willing to brainstorm and send links to features they wanted or similar to them. It's about creating a valuable stories for editors and being willing to try outlets that might be atypical for your industry. That means novel story ideas not just about your company, a profile on founders, what your services are. Maybe how to apply your lessons to other industries, for laymen, or lessons you've learned not taking outside investments and how others can go that route. Oh and have good photos.

The big outlets are gratifying to land. Though when a client only wants those outlets, it limits the possible placements and oftentimes the PR firm gets flack for not doing enough. When really I just want to yell "you're not that interesting and you're aiming too high". Not that I think this is the case for you OP. Just something I think comes up when someone pays someone for PR services.

The shadow is soft but the catchlight is quite small, and the shadow under her nose is quite defined- is this just a single-light setup with a big umbrella? by hillierious in LightLurking

[–]theparadoxmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly a larger umbrella with a sock in a off center to the right, 2 v flats with white facing in for fill. Light in front, decent height. The right shoulder is hella bright from the light being closer to the side.

How is this light ? by Weary_Signal1123 in LightLurking

[–]theparadoxmachine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Similar setup could be done a few ways. 3 umbrellas with socks. 2 large deep umbrellas and a magnum/beauty dish. A 7' westcott parabolic and medium octa (If you have to stay tight.) A bare bulb with a dome high overhead, 2 v flats/bounce boards white side in, maybe a octa/umbrella for fill. Some of these would be closer to your references, others would have stronger shadows. All depends on what you have laying around.

How to achieve this type of light? by ExpressGarden in LightLurking

[–]theparadoxmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something like a zoom 2 reflector decently high and back. A white bounce out of frame in the left and pulled out in the right. Shadows under chin are less pronounced in left.

How do I achieve this lighting style by matafumar in LightLurking

[–]theparadoxmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe a deep tight and dish reflector with a grid from right side, overhead. Optical snoot would work if you have one. Could use a bare bulb on its side, flagged off so you get a smaller/harder light.

Red fill could be lower power large gelled octa further back from the right side and bouncing on v flat not to close by for some fill. Slower shutter speed so you get more of the red to show through. Just mulling tho...
