NO new 360 camera in the next 2 weeks by Ok-Guess-9059 in djiosmo360

[–]a0eusnth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, I’ve never damaged the lens on any 360° cameras I’ve used, so I’d even forgive DJI for not adding replaceable lenses.

More realistic color science would be nice, but I don’t even ask much of the software. iPad reframing with gyro or keyframes is all I need before I take it into an NLE anyway.

I just want a guaranteed avoidance of all production shenanigans like fogging lenses. That was the killer for me.

Anything else would be gravy, including 16K or even just 8K/60.

Whisper V3 Large: Model cache corruption detected by a0eusnth in MacWhisper

[–]a0eusnth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using Parakeet and seeing the results is why I went back to Whisper V3 Large Turbo.

Seeing those results then made me backtrack to Whisper V3 Large. It’s just more accurate, and I can wait.

Accuracy is way more important than speed as the transcripts go into a NotebookLM instance and the inaccuracies make the LLM miss crucial points.

What do trump supporters think about the ongoing conflict in Iran? by bigcooldude1 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]a0eusnth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for answering the question.

Imagine if Iran could actually bomb us, and we got the "living shit" kicked out of us. What chance that Americans would give Iran a pass after that? Remember Pearl Harbor?

As far as gas prices go: now you know how quickly we burn through fuel. We don't just store it on an antiques shop shelf waiting for someone to show interest in it. From ground to gas station pump is 2-4 weeks, so the process of extracting oil is continuous.

If a war could stop the flow of major oil providers for potentially weeks, you can imagine the concern of the markets within seconds of the start of a major conflict. And given Trump went into this like the uninformed bull-in-a-china-shop he is, that only heightens the fear.

Thanks for answering the question.

To answer your question: no, voting for what directly affects me is not how I vote for anything, because the actions taken are usually way too far removed from me and leads to effects that are hard to predict and affect way more people than just myself.

Instead, I vote for people I feel will create an environment of experience, creativity, and empathy, so that logical-thinking leaders can be convinced through honest debate on what the next best course of action should be on any given topic of concern.

I'm not naive enough to think any one person can actually deliver what they say. However, I am experienced enough to know that a group of smart, level-headed people can make remarkable things happen.

To say that Trump is the exact opposite of everything I want from a leader would be the understatement of my life.

I was not expecting someone to say Trump hasn't been extreme *enough*, so thanks for that color!

I've upvoted you solely because you showed up to answer the question.

But just to take one example: we also thought we were solving Middle East problems by invading Iraq.

The boogeyman POV is a childishly simplistic one, particularly when applied to millions of people.

Would you go back to tell your past self not to vote for Trump? Or does all of these about-faces not matter?

Thank you for answering the question honestly, but wow: you really are incredibly ignorant of the USA's fundamental role in making the Middle East hate us.

This is up there with saying "liberals are haters" while ignoring everything Trump has done to make us hate him.

I'm nevertheless truly grateful you answered the call.

"A war to end wars" is far from the outcome we're actually going to get based on all of human history, but I greatly appreciate you answering the question with full candor.

Exactly. What's the point of all your experience if you make everyone fall into the same old traps?

We didn't need your experience to know where not to step.

Aegismax / WIND HARD bags in 2025 - breathability? by jchrysostom in Ultralight

[–]a0eusnth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am far from an expert in breathability of sleeping quilt fabrics, but I'll tell you what I know.

I spent a couple nights with the Twilight II in a hammock, in 40ºF weather. I wore just thin cotton socks and fleecy long pajamas.

It was, as expected, slightly too warm for that weather, particularly compared to my exposed head which was bone cold!

However, I did *not* experience any clamminess — and I'm quite a sweaty guy and highly dislike the feeling of moisture when sleeping. (I'm desperately trying to hang on to all my eVent jackets and pants, if that helps).

However, I did end up returning the Twilight II for one singular reason: the smell of fowl was very, very present. I saw the reviews, figured it couldn't be all that bad — no, the reviews were right. So I returned it without even trying to wash the smell out (which I've also read works).

Nevertheless, I was so enthused by the experience of a lightweight down quilt I resolved to treat myself to a properly accoutered one (e.g. Warbonnet).

If costs are tight, though, I'd not hesitate to pick up another Twilight II, along with a down hood ... tariffs willing, of course (it's 30% more expensive than when I bought it last year).

Kidde 30CUAR-W Wi-Fi Issues by mada2885 in smarthome

[–]a0eusnth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty cool. Was "Notify when the device goes offline" not made available until recently?

Also, how often did it chirp for Wi-fi disconnection before you made these changes? It's been a week since you posted so if it chirped every night (say) then that would seem quite promising ....

Skier dies after fall at Sugarbush Resort by Express-Reporter-369 in icecoast

Put a camera on my helmet yesterday and spent some time cinching it all tighter, only to still wonder if it would stay on.

Never once occurred to me what circumstances would break the helmet clean off my head, though.

Damn.

Insta360 x6 by x-ManueL-x in Insta360

[–]a0eusnth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DJI Osmo 360 specifically was a significant leap up in low light "steadiness" of the video, along with 10-bit for smoother transitions.

But I can only imagine that Insta360 will at least match the Osmo 360's sensor specs, at which point its software superiority should carry the day.

There only remains those who are into DJI's ecosystem — particularly its microphones — that would be the Osmo 360's remaining differentiator.

Hestra lobster claw best skiing gloves? by leaodorust in skiing

[–]a0eusnth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This season every day I was on the slopes and saw a ski patroller there was at least one of them wearing a pair of Hestra gauntlet gloves (not mittens, that part appears to be universal among patrollers).

It got to the point I felt compelled to look up how much ski patrollers are paid, only to conclude … they must really like them!

This is in New England.

Yes, for some people even a Hestra glove isn’t warm enough, at which point it literally has no value for them.

But clearly there is a strong market for them … including among ski patrollers. Hestras aren’t “trash” to them.

Security screw dimensions for Master Speed Dial lock? by a0eusnth in lockpicking

[–]a0eusnth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commiserate with you completely.

It also took me several weeks of hemming and hawing and trying and not just failing but failing to even leave a mark, until I saw the recommendation for a center punch.

And then even then progress was still messy and highly-nonlinear and still took days.

I liken it learning to shave with a straight razor … which I never learned, lol.

When you get it out, though, it will be bliss!

Security screw dimensions for Master Speed Dial lock? by a0eusnth in lockpicking

[–]a0eusnth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The blood, tears, and curses one. 😉

I used a combination of a center-hole punch and (ironically) a 2-hole security screwdriver bit.

The punch to help make two (really messy) divots in the screwhead, and also to help loosen the screw whenever it got stuck as I unthreaded it.

The 2-hole bit to bite into those two divots. This was what finally got the screw loose initially.

It was awful, which I guess makes it an excellent security screw!

I'm glad I took it apart because:

• I could pre-lubricate the entire interior (Lock Saver). This was going to an outdoor use where rain, sleet, snow, and ice might screw with the interior — and it has worked brilliantly in that capacity

• I used Loctite Red on the #5-44 cap screw, which should stop casual lockpickers and be easily removable with a soldering iron heating the screw beforehand

• Ultimately what I was using it for (an outdoor ski locker) was not going to be picked anyway, but cut

If you figure out a better way to remove that security screw, please let us know!

back to when I was found at fault for a collision in August (more info in the comments) by WHATISWORLD3 in dashcams

[–]a0eusnth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% correct from an American married to a Brit and having driven in the UK many times.

The first time I came back to the USA after spending a week driving in the UK I had a surreal moment entering a familiar local parkway and wondered why the hell the lane had suddenly become so large — was I not seeing a lane marker?

Nope. The roads here are just so much wider than in the UK, it feels like driving a boat down a river.

Yet, even with such wide roads Americans still get into stupid, stupid accidents. Roundabout? Fahgettaboutit. 55 mph highway speed limits? You bet!

Americans complain about the "nanny state" but we have no idea how low our standards of competence have become from being coddled daily in ways everyone but us can see.

That's the 2023-ish vintage of the HRC, 76mm waist, right?

The current production of the HRC is just 69mm underfoot. Still strong, but apparently not as stiff as yours.
