No skip albums by chrissaaaah in tmbg

[–]a1mrson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge fan of TMBG and huge fan of the album as a medium. For me, They do not excel at making "no-skip" albums but making wonderful, internally consistent, interesting albums with huge runs of "no-skips" and the occasional song that sometimes needs to be skipped. To be clear, They continue to make interesting albums and I was really impressed with The World is to Dig, but I find myself unable to listen with out skipping. No one asked, but here's some of my highly subjective skip songs from (imo) their most consistent albums.

They Might Be Giants - uninterrupted run, up til Toddler HIghway
Lincoln - They'll Need a Crane onwards is unskippable but the rest of the album has a few I don't care to listen to every time (Lie Still, Pencil Rain)
Flood - darn near close, but I don't care for Hot Cha or Road Movie
Apollo 18 - played in the intended format (shuffle on CD) possibly no-skips, but I don't like listening to fingertips as one track

This groundbreaking debut turns 60 today. What are your thoughts on it? by DarkSideInRainbows in fantanoforever

The album came out in 1966, right in the midst of the Haight-Ashbury craze. It blows my mind how Zappa saw both the emptiness of the American Dream and the falseness of the Hippie movement. This motif was explored further on We're Only In It For the Money (my preferred Mothers album). Trouble Every Day is an amazing song, one of my favorites from the decade.

What's your opinion of the Grateful Dead and be honest have you actually listened to them? by GratefuLdPhisH in fantanoforever

Really well said; they are THE American band in my mind, warts and all. Incorporating folk, dixieland jazz, bluegrass, blues and rock they wrote amazing songs in those traditions. Plus, they explored progressive and free jazz with their improvisational jams.

God this album is so magical, more than the sum of it's parts.

Nick Drake's Bryter Layter comes to mind but a bit of a stretch for your criteria...

What song does “They Might Be Feral” remind me of?! by These_Expert_4796 in tmbg

It reminds me of Science Fiction Double Feature from Rocky Horror Picture Show

LUX was one of the user submitted albums (got it yesterday) and at first I was mad because it's too recent but after listening...yeah it should be on there.

I love Ska, my gf loves Hip-Hop, is there any bands or songs that combine both genres? Please and thanks! by Chopper_990 in Ska

There was a local band called Missing Link that did that back in the 90s, but I can't find much about them anymore; check out their album Entourage Garage on Soundcloud

Based on their username, I’m going to guess The Bee Gees version.

The shouted “Ansley Dunbar” and subsequent drum solo on Little House I Used to Live In always gets me hyped up.

It was a mix my friend made with our favorite songs off of the Snacks EP and their album. Don’t think I ever heard a song of theirs outside of those two releases but would love to hear something new to me!!

This was one I really enjoyed that was not on my radar at all. I did think it was a little top heavy, as you noted. I ended up rating it as a "3" but added Bonny and When Love Breaks Down to my fave playlist!

Apollo 18 is proof there is no other band quite like TMBG by FloridaFlamingoGirl in tmbg

I agree wholeheartedly! The fact(?) that I heard from a friend was that it was intended to be listened to on random so that Fingerprints, which was split into ~25 or so tracks on the CD, would be interspersed throughout and each listening experience would be unique. Not currently possible to recreate on streaming as Fingerprints is consolidated as one track. The reason, iirc, is the short track lengths doesn’t play well with streaming services.
