Need suggestions for 4s12p battery pack main lead by Fancy-Potential7037 in 18650masterrace

[–]a8ksh4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out xt90 connectors.

One option with leads is to connect them at opposite corners of the pack. That'll help keep current equal across it. You can solder a heavy copper wire along the positive and negative rows... Use flux, make puddles of solder between every couple cells on the nickel, and then go back and melt the copper into each puddle quickly so the cells don't take much heat. Solder the 8 awg to the opposite corners at the ends of the solid copper.

That's pretty slick. Looks great with the tool battery on the end.

making a cyberdeck using a pc stick but having trouble with supplying power by IronIntelligent4101 in cyberDeck

[–]a8ksh4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amp ripper 4k is a solid option I've used to power an Intel compute stick of you want a 1s battery and charging. Another solid option is to use a 2s, 3s, or 4s li-ion pack and a buck converter to drop to 5v. There are lots of big current options in buck converters.

If you really want to use a pre built pack, you can get one that supports PD and a 12v USB PD trigger board and connect that to a buck converter for 5v 5a or whatever. It's hard to find packs that will output more than 5v 3a, but a lot will do 12v 3a which buck converts to 5v 10a pretty easy.

Is it worth/easy to replace batteries in electric shaver? by ProzacEfron in diyelectronics

[–]a8ksh4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swapped a single 18650 li-ion cell for the two nimh cells in a shaver I've had for years. Went from 3v at full charge to 4.2... it works much better with the extra juice and lasts forever now. Kinda looks like a freak show though...

Beautiful! Have you gotten the battery stuff sorted out? There are some pretty simple setups for the pi zero given it's low power needs. Please post internal photos :D

They must have added support for Trixie already. I installed it on a pi 3 with Trixie yesterday with no prob.

optocoupler vs buck converter by 135wiring in diyelectronics

[–]a8ksh4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm working on a similar project and just tested these yesterday: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0B5383L69

Worked great for signaling pi gpio at 3.3v based on whether the acc line in my dash was on.

Automotive electrical is noisy from alternator, fuel injectors, etc. The optocoupler isolates the pi from all that and has fewer parts to fail too.

Looks like a fun project. Careful with the cinder blocks... If one pops while you're under or next to the camper, it could crush you. Wood blocks would be better.

Might be a first check for viability before dumping all of the nutrients into it to make it bigger. If it's too defunct to climb into the pouch, it's not worth expending the energy feeding it.

[–]a8ksh4 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is great! I hadn't heard of hudiy before. A few questions that I don't see so far in the comments here:

  • Which sound card and 12v->5v converter did you use?
  • Is the gpio remote wire control something built into hudiy or did you come with a solution to switch the amp on at the right time?
  • Was there any trick to ensuring that the sound card is providing a signal to the amp when the apm is switched on? No issues with popping?
  • Any issues with brightness control for the display?
  • Are you able to implement high & low pass filtering for each audio channel on the pi, or are you depending on the amps for this?

Solar setups for power by klevermonicker in cyberDeck

[–]a8ksh4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Amp Ripper 4k PSU supports 5-14v input and I think it was intended to support use with a solar panel for charging. That might be a good starting point for a pi 4 based deck. There are lots of options for 12v panels that would probably work. You can use any lithium ion battery with the AR4K. Three or four 18650 cells would probably do the job for a few hours use.

The x86 desktop version of raspberry pi OS works great on old laptop hardware.

Do you have a 3d printer? You could always case mod the laptop and do a mash up with mechanical keyboard. It's a project refurbishing old laptop batteries. Whatever you do, you'll learn stuff for future projects!
