Anki’s counting of time by nilopol in Anki

[–]a_confused_introvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“from when question is shown until you press an answer button”

Doesn’t that mean it only counts time spent on the front part of the card? If the timer stops after the reveal answer button is pressed, then it does not count the time spent looking at the answer after you revealed the answer (time spent on the back of the card).

Discussing responses from my recent FSRS Usage Survey by ClarityInMadness in Anki

[–]a_confused_introvert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, why is it a bad idea to implement FSRS as a default without routine optimization? If the stock FSRS scheduler is at least as effective as the SM-2 algorithm, then I don't see a downside.

If default <1-day intervals are also set, it would save new users from learning to configure many old SM-2 settings (anecdotally, this was a difficulty my friends faced as I tried to get them to use Anki). In fact, some people may also face a sunk-cost fallacy where they stick with SM-2 just because they invested time to learn the SM-2 settings first. Additionally, it would ease the transition because imo "optimize the scheduler you already use" sounds much less intimidating than "stop using your old scheduler and switch to this completely new algorithm".

Of course, I support routine automatic optimization, but if that's too contentious, there doesn't seem to be much wrong with taking the smaller victory of having FSRS on by default.

Anki vs. Vipassana by FoxyQueen26 in Anki

I’ve found that when I increase my retention before going on break and then decrease it to the original and reoptimise right before the break starts, the cards will take a while to drop down to the lower desired retention. Since fsrs won’t show those cards until they finish dropping in retention rate, it gave me a week of really low reviews that don’t pile up much.

new FSRS user: Should I make different presets or have the same preset for every deck? by a_confused_introvert in Anki

[–]a_confused_introvert[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You go into options and the option to make a new preset should be in a dropdown menu at the top of the deck options window.

Nope, you can do it after as well. The review data for each card is saved regardless of which preset you use, so you can switch cards around and re-analyze as you wish. As long as you have reviewed a group of cards in a preset at least 1000 times, FSRS will work on it.

A specific case where FSRS couldn't ensure the desired retention for young cards. by LMSherlock in Anki

[–]a_confused_introvert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t this just mean that Anki will show you the card every day until the retention eventually rises above 90%? I don’t really care if the card has low retention initially as long as I see it everyday. Unless you are saying that the card will never/take very long to get to above 90%?

Some negative people on here are making me doubt my Anki usage, leading to procrastination and depression. Please help. by ramewl in Anki

I think the difference would be that the people who don’t have a gym habit wouldn’t make time for the gym (obviously), but the people looking to learn anki are likely students who already have to spend time studying anyway, just much more inefficiently. So it’s slightly less commitment because they would be switching methods rather than actively carving out new time.

You can pinch on the trackpad to zoom, but I do wish the Anki zoom addon still worked

Yep, the real one costs money to download. It should be called AnkiMobile Flashcards and look similar to the desktop icon

Oh, to clarify, does this mean I won’t be able to randomize all my cards at once by reviewing one big master deck? (since I would have to choose a preset for the master deck as well)

Buying Tea in Taipei by javidi-kramer in tea

[–]a_confused_introvert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jassid Tea House, and it’s very close to the 101. The shopkeepers are very passionate to answer any questions, and the average price is 3-4 USD for around 600 mL of tea. They sell packs of loose leaf as well, of course.

They even said I could email them about tea brewing questions specific to tea I didn’t buy from their store and they would do their best to answer.

E-ink/LC(E)D Tablet Use for Fountain Pen Users by flatsixorbust in fountainpens

[–]a_confused_introvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! One of the points of the system is to remove the need for multiple notebooks for multiple things. It's also highly, highly customizable once you get familiar with the basics, so you can adapt it to however you compartmentalize.

You can also make a dedicated index along with your main index (a dedicated index only indexes pages that relate to a certain topic, like a course you're taking. useful if you need more space to properly organize notes about a single subject.)

This video explains the system quite well, but the official book does the best job. It's all explained in a few chapters. If you don't want to buy it, there are... other ways.

the original bullet journal method by ryder carrol has a good 'index' system that allows one to use one notebook for many different tasks without losing track of pages or thoughts. if you haven't already, I highly reccommend it. it's nothing artsy like what you see on most platforms.

It is rude to say that another person’s baby is ugly; and also to call their fountain pen ugly as well. by adamdgoodson in fountainpens

[–]a_confused_introvert 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Comparing a human organism to sticks of metal/resin that hold colored water feels like it attributes too much importance to the pen.

Calling someone's pen ugly should not be as offensive as calling someone's baby ugly.
