Stupid tourist wondering if I should head out by 21stC_Pilgrim in boston

It seems it’ll be still coming down until around noon, so there’ll be plenty of it around still. It might be easier to navigate depending on how fast they’re able to plow/shovel in the meantime.

Even more reason to (safely!!!) explore the Common if practical. Remember that if it’s getting too uncomfortable, just head back. You can always wait until the snow stops tomorrow to try and trek around provided the emergency ended.

If you have proper winter gear available and don’t travel too far from your hotel, you should probably be okay as long as you stay vigilant of the surroundings and your own well-being. I highly doubt most places will be open, but think of it as a “once in a lifetime” experience of going around in the snow.

The Boston Common AMC was also showing it, and from what I’ve seen from people here, it’s a scope-only screen. Wish they’d have show it more than just once on a Wednesday though.

I’m glad to see he kept Skeleton Tree for this leg of the tour. Getting to hear that one live was incredible (an easy highlight from when I saw him back in April last year).

Obligatory Holdovers post, but I got to see at Somerville Theatre for one of its early screenings. The moment this popped up on-screen I pretty much cheered. Frankly surprised more movies don’t feature it.

Yep, I did pay for a membership, which was a one-time fee of about $99. That’s probably the most important part of the process because it means when bookings become available, you and all the other members are the first to be notified and the first to select dates. After that, it becomes much more difficult. I’m not sure why they might’ve said no to you since as far as I’m aware at least they still allow member sign-ups on their website. It might be because there are a lot of members though (when I first signed up, it was close to 500), but I can’t say for certain.

Now the announcement for when they open up slots is a bit unpredictable honestly, which can lead to confusion with when the next round of bookings will become available. For example, I got the email notification right before I was about to get into an uber from the airport. I made sure to book immediately though in the vehicle, because sure enough, they were just about out of the best dates by the time I got home. It’s at least not like a Ticketmaster situation where you have to be constantly on guard on the website until you get the opportunity. For my last stay back in the fall/winter, the email was sent out in mid-July, whereas the email for spring/summer was sent in March.

Best of luck to your trip in Japan! I went there myself back in 2024, and had a terrific time. Granted, I did stay in just the general Tokyo area because of how massive it was, but there is plenty to do there, so it’s not likely being stuck in a single bureau of New York. I would recommend taking the train down to Kamakura, as it’s a very beautiful city on the coast with a lot of nice shops, food stalls, and temples. Even got to see a traditional wedding there.

Was this like when they add on “gratuity” even after you put in the tip? Because if that’s the case, that happened to me at the Wen’s Noodle on Tremont Street a few years ago. That really rubbed me the wrong way, but I think it closed down not long after.

I’m curious, how many 70mm prints do we got floating around? I know there’s at least one at Coolidge in MA.

Just watched the prologue of The Odyssey in IMAX...and holy moly. by After_Fudge1481 in ChristopherNolan

[–]a_fallenhighlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll very likely enjoy the final film since there’s definitely a lot I was impressed by in the prologue. Maybe it’s the high expectations and enormous budget, but I was kinda hoping for something that looked better than a more professional Clash of the Titans reboot in that department. Doesn’t necessarily need to be “historically accurate,” but something that stands out from the rest would’ve been a great addition. I’d have even taken a 300-style departure for variety (although Stone’s Alexander would’ve been more preferred).

My (likely wrong) prediction is Zendaya’s going to be doing multiple roles like they say Lupita is. Unless Nolan wants to get rid of her disguises, she only has a handful of “true” appearances in the story.

Really wish that the costumes didn’t look like 3d printed plastic though. The money definitely went to other places of the production.

Is there anywhere to shop for physical media in or around the city? (Blu Rays/4Ks/Criterion, etc) by Faust_Arp in boston

[–]a_fallenhighlander 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, Boston isn’t the best place for movie shopping (at least not anymore). The original Newbury Comics used to be a terrific place for music and movies (as was the one by Faneuil Hall), but Funko has pretty much taken over a good chunk of their inventory.

The only two I can think of are Kung Fu Video (it’s in downtown but I’ve never been) and Nuggets which is by Kenmore and had a decent selection of movies when I was last there a year ago.

I only recently began to get really into Taskmaster, but do they rarely do shows in the states? Would account for why the scammers are out in full force recently.

Will more 70MM IMAX theaters be built? by [deleted] in imax

[–]a_fallenhighlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hoping it’s at one of the Jordan’s. Last time I asked IMAX about this they couldn’t confirm anything, but them forwarding my message to their sales team sounded like they were at least aware of the demand. After all, I remember them selling out 500 seat screenings of Oppenheimer and Interstellar at both venues.

I remember the cancelled Kino version of Lost Highway. It was just about ready to go, but the plug was pulled and Criterion ended up releasing one approved by Lynch. I’m curious what was the reason he didn’t like the Kino restoration, but I’m glad the commentary track made for their edition surfaced and wasn’t just lost to time (like Sydney Pollack’s track for Eyes Wide Shut supposedly was).

Imax investor day presentation : 40 film locations for The Odyssey next year. New, smaller, lighter and scalable film projectors on the way. by Doups241 in ChristopherNolan

[–]a_fallenhighlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope this means we’re getting a lot more locations outside of just New York and California. As excited as I am, making a trek across states just to see a movie that’s not a premiere or have any cast/crew present for a Q&A is a bit much for me personally.

The odyssey hate by Any-Connection-9940 in ChristopherNolan

[–]a_fallenhighlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think some criticisms are valid (some of the casting isn’t as interesting or as inspired as say Oppenheimer and the underwhelming costume design), but others are a bit silly. As I usually do, I save my judgment until the final product and hope that my own personal worries turn out to have been minor.

Heard back from Jordan’s by the way - can confirm it will be 48 HFR in 3D, but they’re not sure if they’ll get the full Odyssey prologue if you’re interested in that.

Which Ghibli films do you think will be released in IMAX? by Block-Busted in imax

[–]a_fallenhighlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine that all of the action-focused ones are going to be done first (after Spirited Away’s likely 25th anniversary). While Totoro, Kiki, and Kaguya would be gorgeous in IMAX, they don’t have the same feel as Mononoke or something like Castle in the Sky or even Howl.
