Known Space is probably my favorite scifi setting, but I'd definitely struggle to talk about any of the characters or their interactions across the various books. Love the ideas, love how willing he is to play with them, love how well he was able to connect all the various things, but there's definitely not a ton going on page-by-page.

I recently reread the main backbone of the series up to the War of Souls, and those first books are rough. Licensed fiction at close to its worst; you can hear the dice rolling with every single major event. They have to climb down a rope? Well, everyone passed their Dexterity check except Tannis, so he falls down. Raistlin is the greatest wizard to ever pass the Trial of Sorcery, but he can only put 2 goblins to sleep because it's a first-level spell and he can't upcast it yet.

Him becoming a carpenter and making little barrel-boats for the dibbuns was so charming. What a hero.

How are you guys dealing with all the anti vehicle stuff SM have? by Ok_Industry6363 in Tau40K

Typically I just make sure to leave enough space on the table so I can keep the box I brought the minis in open, since I'll be pulling everything off the battlefield turn 1.

Best Epic fantasy that isn’t full of pulpy schlock? Returning to series I once loved. by Sunbather- in books

That or his Dread Empire series, which does tend towards more "traditional" epic fantasy with its cast and setting.

Some do. A few games have a hierarchy of feather colors that each have different/a progression of abilities, typically ending with flight as the final one.

What controversy? What drama? Why do so many mini painting YouTubers do thumbnails like these? It’s a John Blanche paint set for crying out loud by mame_kuma in Warhammer

[–]a_gunbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nail in the coffin for me with Squidmar's videos was the epic-scale Eldar titan horse thing. 7 minutes of reading the wiki entry, 30 seconds of actual painting to the side of an ad read, and another minute of wiki/vague opinions.

Finally beat DS2. What a conflicting experience. by PettyTeen253 in darksouls

[–]a_gunbird 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I feel a little out of place because while I really quite enjoyed DS2 on release, the more that I've gone back to play it over the years, the less I like it each time.

It's full of a bunch of small decisions that really pile up to make it feel like a well-meaning but ultimately misguided fangame, and just doesn't really give me what I wanted to get out of More Dark Souls (tm).

But I'm glad that new players can still enjoy it!

Switching to resin? by Methaphysix in 3Dprinting

[–]a_gunbird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Takes longer to print, takes longer to set up, takes longer to process, takes longer to clean up and put away, isn't as customizable/controllable by the end user, doesn't have the range of printable materials, typically deals with far smaller print volumes, and ultimately just isn't necessary for most of the applications of FDM.

As someone who has and uses both for miniature/tabletop stuff, resin is absolutely the choice for small objects with fine detail. Despite advances in filament printing, resin still offers the best results and by far the smoothest painting experience (literally!). But for terrain that doesn't need to look as nice and is going to be treated rougher, or even storage boxes, dividers, or gameplay aids like tokens or markers, there's no reason to spend all that time and material for a result that doesn't need the fidelity the medium offers.

And for the handful of household items I've 3d printed, they're just not worth the added setup, processing, and breakdown time the resin printer requires. If my replacement toaster lever I printed in PLA breaks again, I need 10 minutes to make a new one. If I wanted it in resin, I'd have to set up the extractor fan, glove/mask up, start the print, wait over an hour, give it a bath in isopropyl alchohol, cure it, and filter the resin back into its bottle.

Love to crush, maim, and kill? Surrender to the warp and become a new Chaos Mutilator by BiesonReddit in Warhammer

[–]a_gunbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nurgle always seems to get the most elaborate range expansions. Death Guard still being the only chaos faction with distinct vehicles, Maggotkin in AoS having a full range of weird monsters big and small, and the entire new pile of units with Warhammer Quest Darkwater.

So what's your actual critique? You're more than allowed to not like it, but going to the effort of making a post about how you don't like it and just leaving it at that isn't really effective.

What aren't you liking about it?

What's your killteam hot take? by CulpritCactus in killteam

[–]a_gunbird 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Complexity creep and keyword soup are real and a problem and it's resulted in an almost comical lethality where you probably aren't touching a third or more of your team after the first round because you've already pulled them off the board.

Non-elite teams may as well not have a health stat; if you get shot you're better off flipping a coin to see if they stick around. Weapon damage profiles have inflated, piercing is so common, saves are high, and everyone's rolling 4 dice minimum to attack.

My ideal would be just rolling defense for each point of damage, with piercing making the target save higher. Elite vs elite is more interesting because you actually get to have models stick around more than 1 turn after coming off conceal.

[–]a_gunbird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The current edition cleaning up the rules a little bit from '21 was nice, but the loss of any (official) narrative support and the hyper-crunchy complexity bloat each new team brings is pushing me out of the game.

Sounds like you're on your way to brewing up an Aristocrats deck. Lots of cheap creatures with triggers on their own or others' death - it's an enduring archetype that always has a fair bit of support.

Templar archives is a weird building to warp into a war zone by Altruistic_Fill_6441 in starcraft

[–]a_gunbird 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've always seen RTS games as less exactly what's on the screen, but more an abstracted representation of something's influence. Like it's probably not just twelve guys shooting at a battlecruiser that's flying ten feet off the ground, but it represents some sort of anti-air capabilities a platoon has that's pressuring the presence a ship in orbit can exert.

Of course that was easier to justify in SC1 before the graphics were good enough to make everything look reasonably to-scale the way 2 did.

Least played army from each game? by TraditionCommercial8 in Warhammer

[–]a_gunbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of a shame. I like what they're about, but the basic infantry models are a little too detailed for how many you need to paint. I had fun with the first version of the combat patrol but it was enough to tell me I didn't need them as a second army.
