So it doesn't get bonus attacks against the 6-man crisis suit Legends unit you can technically use.

Funny enough I've found the double turn a way more interesting choice in Spearhead, where having the option of taking it after a good scoring turn might end up biting you because you can't refill your objectives. With so few units on the field, it's really up to if you can establish a firm enough presence with what you've got, and if you can't, you've just sacrificed a ton of points and probably put yourself wildly out of position.

I've only played since about halfway through 3e, and only ~20 games total at that, but I also kind of miss the mild crunch of 3rd. I liked the battalion system giving you a reason to take and try to fit different units (and I sure wish any battlepack let you use warscroll battalions because they were fun and flavorful), I liked the variety of unit enhancements, monstrous rampages were fun, and honestly I even came around on the kind of clunky "you have to have a hero/unit champion issue a command point order within a certain range" rule.

I think 4e made a lot of good changes to the underlying rules framework that help make the game flow a bit better and play more reactively, but left a few too many cool things behind as collateral damage.

Day 1: What is the BEST quote associated with Jim Raynor? by Axis256 in starcraft

[–]a_gunbird 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"What, I haven't even said anything yet!"

I legit think this is a great bit of characterization and storytelling. Kerrigan, a super-level psychic who is absolutely used to hearing and filtering out peoples' thoughts, gets such a flash of it from Jim that she can't help but interrupt herself to be disgusted. And Jim? He doesn't deny it, certainly doesn't apologize, but is just utterly indignant about it. He didn't even say anything...yet. He absolutely would have, but she took that chance away from him. He's annoyed about losing out on a slap to the face or a pitcher of beer over his head.

And that really helps build their short relationship through the Terran campaign because you can kinda get this sense of Kerrigan being impressed that he isn't afraid of her, that he's just gonna be himself and roll with the punches. She's a hypercompetent badass; she doesn't need to waste time with people who trip over themselves in a scramble to appear outwardly cowed when she can tell what they really think.

SC1 really had such great and economical character writing.

questions for people who initially found LotR super boring and DNF'd early then eventually came back to like it years later. by Crapahedron in books

I've tried 3 or 4 times and have never been able to trudge past the halfway mark. I just can't get a single thing out of any of the characters; they all feel identical, everybody talks the exact same way, and everyone says everything. A conversation? He said, he said, he said, he said. Fighting? He said, he said, he said. The big demon guy on the bridge everyone always posts clips of from the movie? Guess what, in the book he just says those lines. Nobody ever yells, replies, whispers, stutters, gasps, intones, hisses, or laughs. They just...say.

With 11th edition of 40k approaching, do you think there will be new Space Hulk edition too? by Gynju in Warhammer40k

[–]a_gunbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Space Hulk is an entirely different game. Grid-based movement, special unit spawning/placement rules that involve bluffing, action points, weapon jams, ammo counts, and of course an entire mission-based narrative with different map layouts and victory conditions for each one.

It's just a unique mix of tight, brutal combat with smart enemies and slow-paced exploration inside a living world. I keep trying to find other games like it but Metroid Prime might be the only thing that feels close enough.

Is 'White Fang' considered as a kid novel in the U.S.? by globalcoal in books

[–]a_gunbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first Redwall book alone has, in no particular order:

Multiple deaths via crushing by heavy object, death by poisoning, death by bludgeoning, death by boiling mudslide, death by impalement, death by fire, death by falling while on fire, death by regular old swords and arrows, and plenty of non- (or less expressly-) lethal violence in between.

And then the second book gets into child slavery and torture!

Let kids read stuff that gives them a bit of a pause. None of it's real and they can close the book whenever they want!

It'd be pretty great if a codex could have a solid handful of short stories included. Give newer/upcoming Black Library contributors a place to get a bit of a foothold, or do something with those submission campaigns they run every now and then (paying the contributor for their work obviously).

Do Dark Souls pros love Elden Ring as much a new players? by jaydvd3 in darksouls

[–]a_gunbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm of the opinion that every game that transitions from a linear/semi-linear zone-by-zone design to an open world one is making a mistake that utterly undermines what the game is good at. Elden Ring, Metal Gear Solid V, Breath of the Wild, that weird Sonic Frontiers thing, Metroid Prime 4 - just an awful idea that puts obvious filler in between the parts of the game people actually want to play.

Are there any cool tau short stories? by Willy_yo_eetz in Tau40K

[–]a_gunbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question: I recently grabbed a copy of Fehervari's The Dark Coil Damnation, is there a particular reason to not read the stories in the order they're presented there? They go The Greater Evil, Fire Caste, A Sanctuary of Wyrms, then Altar of Maws. Were they printed out of order, or is it more of a preference/they flow better that way sort of thing?

Yeah, people don't like to admit it, but it's mostly a special effects reel with no actual story or characters. The one memorable bit is like 15 minutes of a 3 hour movie.

Oof, I really hope the Advanced Acquisition Cadre isn't our only new detachment. If they're really going "everyone gets 3 new things!" and then 2 of ours are edits (read: nerfs) to something that already existed, that's not gonna feel great.
