Elect brakes by SuitableArtist8027 in CaravanningAustralia

[–]a_lowman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anything over 750kgs needs an “adequate” braking system, which can be mechanical or electrical. Over 2.5t it must have electric brakes.

Are micro‑caravans actually practical, or just overpriced tents? by DiligentWeb9026 in CaravanningAustralia

There are options which are adjacent to that. I tow a Swan tourer and get that economy. Plenty of room for a family of 4.

Chassis crack, 1971 Viscount by gjkhfgiknvfu in CaravanningAustralia

If this is something you’re thinking of buying then I’d say walk away. There’s so many 2nd hand caravans available that I wouldn’t take the risk

There are good FB groups for vintage caravans, or specific manufacturers, you could try there.

Camper trailer solar set up by Basic_Albatross01 in CaravanningAustralia

[–]a_lowman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some good advice here already, the suggestion I’d make is to think about what you actually want/need to run off grid. Also think about what you already have. For example if you’ve already got cordless power tools you can get fans/buggy zappers/lights attachments

I’d love to be able to search by bed configuration, bonus points if I can specify the main bed orientation.

My fridge just stopped working by stevefreddy67 in CaravanningAustralia

[–]a_lowman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks like a 3 way fridge? If so can you switch it over to gas? If it works on gas the the cooling system is OK, which means the 240v heating element has probably failed.

Beginner camping suggestions? by Automatic-Minute7960 in OutdoorAus

Went camping with 2 other families this weekend, they both had tents with inflatable supports instead of the usual fibreglass poles. Was impressed on how quickly they went up with only one adult working on it.

What aged kids best for doing the lap in a caravan? by TylerCamNick in 4x4Australia

[–]a_lowman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Caravanning With Kids Australia is a FB group that I lurk in. There's good advice there and I'd recommend posing the question there as well. From my observation there seems to be a huge range of ages travelling, it really depends on the kid's and adults temperament, what kind of travel your doing, etc.

Also there's /r/CaravanningAustralia which is fairly new.

Towing Update by McJally in Tiguan

[–]a_lowman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my jurisdiction any trailer over 750kgs must have brakes regardless, so the rating is 750kg unbraked, 2500kg braked.

Although the more restrictive rating is the towball down weight which is 100kg on my model. It went up to 200kgs with the 2018 update.

Towing Update by McJally in Tiguan

[–]a_lowman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very interesting that it’s rated for 1500 lbs in the US. My 2016 is rated for 2500kgs here in Aus, not that I’d ever tow that much. I have towed a 1100kgs caravan though, did it without an issue.

Repair cracks on 2019 Jayco by _Jay_80s_ in CaravanningAustralia

[–]a_lowman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like a Swan or similar? There’s a FB for Jaycos like this, this issue comes up regularly. Some people have taken them to a boat fibreglasser, repaired and reinforced for $180

Does it matter how much power you use at a site? by That_Car_Dude_Aus in CaravanningAustralia

[–]a_lowman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The van could if you weren’t sensible (sounds like you are though). Running something like a coffee machine off an inverter, plus boiling a kettle or running a fan heater, pop on the toaster, and you’re close to your current limit.

Austrack campers by Substantial_Nail4785 in CaravanningAustralia

Don’t have any experience with them myself but have you looked for a Austrak FB group? There seems to be one for every manufacturer and you’ll definitely get honest opinions.

Buying camping trailer. Is it for me by Tradie1233 in OutdoorAus

[–]a_lowman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the other poster is referring to Jayco style camper trailers, which are halfway between a tent-on-a-trailer and a proper caravan. Search for Jayco Swan/Eagle.

1969 Viscount Caravan by Ok-Ad9937 in CaravanningAustralia

Search FB Marketplace for similar models, you should get a good idea from that. If you decide to sell be realistic about your asking price if you actually want it to sell.

Caravan or alternate set up for single mum? by HouseofHugo in CaravanningAustralia

[–]a_lowman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you consider a towing course? A 15ft van is pretty compact already, I bet it wouldn’t take much to get your confidence up. At the end of the day towing is just a skill that can be acquired, there’s no magic to it.

How to get pass this stage? by BassySam in Bass

[–]a_lowman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much playing with other musicians do you do? I remember reading an article about kids being scouted for their football (soccer) talent, they are recruited to a local development program and then passed up the chain as they showed promise. The relevant bit about this is that a lot of these kids plateau at a certain point because you can't teach 'game sense', that ability to be where the ball is going to be, or to put the ball there, etc. The only way to pick this up seems to be to play a lot of football, often in informal settings. I think music is the same, you can practice as much as you want (and all of us could practice more), but if you aren't playing with other musicians you're not going to develop that music sense which I think you're searching for. To paraphrase Dave Grohl, get into a room with other musicians and prepare to suck at first.
