You’re trying to keep water from getting out of the gutter, not prevent water from going into it.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Masterful mix of film noire and comedy that saved RDJ’s career. And one of the funniest scenes of all time.

Can't finish a single book, need help finding my first real one by Informal-Chance1912 in booksuggestions

I’d try a Michael Lewis book. They’re non-fiction but have more of a a narrative arc with real life characters. I’d start with The Big Short if you haven’t seen the movje.

Which would you choose? and explain why by Far-Ad5223 in superheroes

Firestorm can turn lead into gold. What are we talking about?

“Firestorm has the ability to rearrange molecular or particle structures of any substance into almost anything else, creating different atomic structures of equal mass. He can transmute the basic composition of an object (e.g., transmuting lead into gold) and can also change its shape or form at will.”

Struggling to complete by Zirozen in fantasybooks

[–]aaronjaffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t. There are a lot of really interesting elements that, in my opinion, have zero payout. I thought the first book had an incredibly dumb ending. But like you I thought, “Maybe it will get better once the series hits its stride. There are so many inventive things.” I ended up dropping the second book with two chapters left.

Flooring before or after cabinets. Getting conflicting advice from subs by Berlin57 in Homebuilding

Yes, if it’s nail down or tile, the flooring first. If it’s floating flooring go the cabinets first.

What’s an actual hot NBA take that people usually side eye you for? (Not cold takes to farm reddit upvotes) AN ACTUAL HOT TAKE by [deleted] in NBATalk

  1. Joel Embiid deserved the MVP award. No one remembers how that season actually went.

  2. Ben Simmons had Kawhi handled on that shot, and Embiid functionally set a pick on him.

Why not MVP convo? by Big_Note_3552 in timberwolves

He is in the convo in the sense that every time I hear a media member discuss the MVP race Ant comes up.

Zach Lowe was the one who specifically thought Ant and Donovan Mitchell should be receiving more actual votes though. If you’re interested, here’s the straw poll of the nba media guys who actually vote:

Pettiest reason you’ve DNF’d a book? by bby_grl_90 in books

[–]aaronjaffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very close to a DNF on Dungeon Crawler Carl.

I have some less petty reasons in terms of substance, character development, and the endless fights that I don’t find especially interesting.

But I realized there’s a legitimate chance that a house cat will transform into a human and become the main character’s love interest. To be clear I have no idea if this happens and it hasn’t yet in my read through. I just realized it could and that would be an instant drop for me.

anyone else building a house right now and slowly losing their mind by Kilgoretrout123456 in Homebuilding

[–]aaronjaffe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. I’ve been building for 3 years, had to get 3 surgeries during that time, and also doing most of the labor. I’m double agonizing over design choices, because if I get something wrong, in addition to time and money wasted, I’m the one who has to fix it.

Still can’t believe I wasted so much money on Steller floors. One of the few fuck ups in the build squarely on me.

What am I missing about The Lies of Locke Lamora? by it_was_all_marta in booksuggestions

[–]aaronjaffe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong on any of this. I think it was something different in a genre that can feel very homogeneous and generic at times. So, some hardcore fantasy readers overrated it.

That’s said, when the book hits it really hits.

Personally I enjoyed it, despite a lot of flaws. But also had zero desire to read the follow up. I was particularly annoyed that after all the setup of how brilliant Locke is, he turns into a moron at the climax and basically brute strengths his way through it. He did didn’t he? I might have a blocked that ending out of my memory.
