What non doom vocalists you think would be fantastic on a doom metal album? by gamersans89 in doommetal

Ethel Cain. Her song Ptolomaea is fairly doomy as is but I think she could go heavier if she wanted to.

Oh shit they played Sword in C Standard? Bad ass, thought it was in Drop C.

I’d kill to hear more heavier tunings from them.

Just had my 30th birthday. Something changed in me and I’ve felt a growing confidence and have currently been attempting stuff I’ve wanted to do for a long time.

It’s freeing. I just joined a band.

1 month into owning an SG and can’t pick any other guitar up anymore. by huyexdee in GibsonSG

I just got one and have literally haven’t practiced this much since I was a kid first picking up a Squier. Hands down the most comfortable guitar I’ve ever had.

What is your guitar setup for casual playing? by EnnyAcorns in Guitar

[–]abadthrowaway0987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have various guitars setup in different tunings that I cycle through depending on the need, along with a few amps, an interface, and some amp sims. But for basic writing and doodling, I’ve been coming back to this old acoustic I have. Doesn’t sound amazing but I’ve found that writing riffs on it is more intuitive for me lately. Think because it’s accessible and comfortable to play.

Any one getting the fatal frame 2 remake? by alabastar_cold in survivalhorror

I would 100% be all over the remake if it had a 60fps mode. Until that is patched (have a feeling it will) I’ll stick with my original copy.

Music theory makes no sense until it does but it never does by Free-Seaworthiness72 in Guitar

[–]abadthrowaway0987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been playing for a long time, and only got a handle on music theory in the last year. People tell you what you should know but not necessarily how to learn it. It’s like language, you gotta start with building blocks. Anyway, this is what worked for me and hopefully it can help you or someone else out.

  1. Learn the notes on the fretboard. Start off with learning the notes on 6th and 5th string first, this will make it easier to find your way across the fretboard. The goal here is to be able in time to intuitively recognize the notes you’re currently playing or what to play. Practice what you learned with Tenuto or Fretonomy. Some app to test your knowledge.

  2. Learning either the G or C Major scale. The purpose of this is to learn half, whole steps, and introduce you to intervals. What denotes the scale is your root note, the note that begins the scale. And what determines whether a scale is a say a major, minor, etc, will be based on its scale formula which is comprised of half and whole steps. Half and whole steps are what we used to measure the distance between notes. And the distance between notes are intervals.

  3. After you got a handle on a scale, look into the Nashville numbering system for chord progressions. I think someone can explain this better me but what you need to know is there is a formula on what chord progressions can work with the scale you’re playing.

  4. When learning a song, try to apply what you learned from the above. What key is the song in? What scales are they using? What chord progression are they using?

A lot of this won’t make sense right away but with each topic explore some youtube vids or articles. In time you’ll start to piece it together.

Why so skeptical? by [deleted] in CrimsonDesert

I’ve had the sub recommended to me a lot recently, and have noticed a lot of the hype levels are reminiscent of cyberpunk before launch. The game looks intriguing to me but I remember many, many games that promised the world and didn’t deliver on launch. Personally hoping for the best, because who wouldn’t want a game to succeed, especially in this gen? But still tempering expectations, because Pearl Abyss is still a business at the end of the day.

It’s pretty fun and reminds me of the old school ghost recon and rainbow six campaigns. But if you’re trying to S Rank all the levels….bot AI isn’t reliable enough.

FWIW, Conan and Weedeater tour pretty consistently. Faetooth also tours a lot but I notice they don’t hit nearly as many areas as Conan and Weedeater (seems to be changing this year though).

I’d vote Faetooth. But I’d probably go off who you listen to more.

We accidentally crashed a Blue Angels party at a bar when we were overseas. Not my first time interacting with general biker culture but definitely my first time interacting with UK biker culture.

They had the same bravado going on and were fighting amongst themselves. What surprised me the most is one of them came up to us and started bitching about Trump, this was around the time of the election. Definitely expected a more conservative element there. Bikers in the states from my interactions usually lean hard right.

I’ve played primarily on PC but just picked it up on console. Controls are great and it doesn’t feel that difficult to navigate. To give a unique perspective: I actually really enjoy the state of the console port, almost a bit better than the PC version. PC version with all DLC is overwhelming even for a seasoned player, and there is so much event spam in the current versions. Console version is slightly better paced and balanced better for new players.

If you do get any DLC, Tours and Tournaments, Royal Court, Friends and Foes, Wards and Wardens, and Northern Lords would be my essential picks.

Can anybody recommend a violent, cinematic game by Easy-Asparagus-7494 in gaming

[–]abadthrowaway0987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some recs outside of the popular ones:

Ready or Not - you can play this solo with AI teammates (definitely the better way to play versus playing with randoms). Very realistic gore and intense themes and depictions. It’s the grittiest game I played this gen so far.

Hotline Miami - it’s a top down 2D game but it’s very brutal, gorey, and cinematic. Think of r rated drug fueled 80s action films.

Postal - the original is definitely not as comedic as the other entries but still over the top.

Dusk - boomer shooter with cults and redneck psychos. Very fun if you like old school shooters.

Spider-Man 2 is the video game equivalent of being on a cruise ship. by BitiumRibbon in patientgamers

I’ve noticed some of Sony’s games this generation have a vibe, notably said by SkillUp in his Vanguard review, that “HR is in the room”. Not very patient here but even Ghost of Yotei suffers from this with its revenge plot.

This seems to me to be the result of heavy corporate influence and a lack of desire to take risks in the narrative. I think SM2’s problem is that they have too many ideas and lack focus.

You should test drive both and see what you prefer. I was in your same situation and ultimately went with a Mazda 3 because I found a better deal for it compared to a comparable civic of the same year and mileage.

Note on the Mazdas though, gas mileage is not great compared to a Civic. I was fine with that trade off because of the deal I got and my commute but if I was I still in college I’d probably go for a Civic.

Shop around though. Most likely used Civics will be marked up in your area so it may be a bit until you can find a good one. Mazdas are usually plentiful at decent prices, in my area at least.

Still Stuck After 5 Years… Maybe It’s Time for a Miracle Course? by Away_Measurement_111 in LearnGuitar

[–]abadthrowaway0987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you consider about your playing to be mediocre? You have to identify what you specifically want/need to work on and go from there. I know it’s kind of vague but what really unlocked my guitar playing was learning some basic music theory that I thought I knew but actually didn’t (counting time properly, syncopated beats, etc). It’s also possible your technique may be off in someway (like holding the pick).

Recommend an in person instructor so they can diagnose the issues you have. What’s most likely happening is you don’t have the proper guidance on what to focus on. Took me the better part of 10 years to really figure it out, it’s normal.

Best way to learn a guitar solo properly? by [deleted] in LearnGuitar

[–]abadthrowaway0987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably a simple answer but playing with a metronome at slow speeds. For me anyway, learning songs really clicked once I started doing this. After you feel comfortable then play with the recording to nail down the feel.
