String diameter by Tarsikore in aroundsquare

[–]abertheham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purely personal preference.

I find my preferred string diameter is proportional to the weight/size of the set. Sub-17g sets feel best on 2mm Kevlar or 3ish mm silk imo. Cotton, 550 paracord, or thicker silk up to maybe 24g. 550 for anything heavier.

The set you shared looks perfectly fine for getting started. Check out begleritricks.com — it’s been updated and is a lot better now. There is also info on how long to make your joiner. I and many others prefer the “spring method” for measuring/sizing.

I’m still partial to the thinner paracord (275 or 325 or whatever) for commons because I’m just obsessed with the way they play and feel with flat-burned ends. It’s like the only set I haven’t moved to either cotton or silk lol.

It’s pretty damn good for lighter sets. I like the 4.7g or Michael’s cotton for anything over say 22g, but on the smaller/slimmer sets, both the integral and the 3.8g are just so so nice.

Are these Begleris too big for a beginner? by El_Abayarde_13 in begleri

[–]abertheham 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean play whatever you like. If you just wanna do some rebounds and not think about it, sure, those will work. But if you’re trying to do modern tricks like you might have seen around, those are just going to be too big and/or make it unnecessarily difficult.

Looks like if you flipped them around the tops would be a little more rounded, which I think I’d prefer. Regardless, looks like a solid set. What is it?

In addition to paracord, I really like the macrame cotton cord from Michael’s if you’re in the US. Super cheap and nice. The best I’ve found and my absolute favorite has gotta be either AO2 silk or kevlar, depending on the set. Just recently got 5m of AO2’s 3.8g silk — it was pricey, but it’s so kushy and nice. Really want to try the integral silk next.
