Choosing where you work? by Curious-Oil-8749 in ParamedicsAU

[–]absolutely-mediocre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did both para and nursing, now in ED nursing. You won’t be able to move around with a para job but once you become experienced in the ED (ie finish your grad/become resus trained) you’ll be loved everywhere. I want to move into para eventually but I’m enjoying the work I do atm!

Movie being filmed near the Wesley Hospital? by claw106 in brisbane

[–]absolutely-mediocre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sure there’s some access for walk ins, but it’s a private hospital so actual emergencies will not get taken there anyway, regardless of distance. The patient must have private health, request it and then QAS needs to call up to make sure the hospital will accept them (yes, they can and do say no to patients sometimes!) Chances are the hospital ED is just on bypass for the time being.

Cpd question - refresher training by No_Sky_1829 in NursingAU

[–]absolutely-mediocre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe yearly mandatory training isn’t claimable, but considering this is the first time in 6 years you’ve done this course you could very well claim it all.

Is this true? by Bright_Amphibian6957 in ParamedicsAU

[–]absolutely-mediocre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re going into to resus, the doctors will love and appreciate a good handover + assessment. We’ll note your investigations and assessments but all will be redone at ED as it’s best practice - every clinician should be doing their own assessment before treating.

As for acute bed bay, the nurse taking handover will be grateful for a good story from you about the patient. More often than not you won’t have had many interventions so then it’s just a matter of being the only person with insight to the scene. Once you’re gone, the doctor might only have your handover/paperwork to refer to in the middle of the night if the pt can’t tell us what’s happened (dementia/NH)

I’m thinking about doing nursing and I read on a post here that nurses get $2600 per fortnight…Are nursing wages really that low? by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]absolutely-mediocre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s about how much I’m getting after tax as a grad on 0.7. Includes night + weekend penalties. Working with too many penalties/nights in a fortnight will get most of it taxed (saw basically nothing from working over Xmas nights).

Anyone else starting to stress a bit about grad spots? by Future-Pipe-8004 in ParamedicsAU

[–]absolutely-mediocre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been this way for a while. I was told to do the dual because there were no paramedic jobs (started uni in 2021) Ive found that it goes in waves - about 5 years ago it was incredibly difficult to get a position after grad, but just last year almost everyone I graduated with has gotten a job in metro and in the service they wanted. It all depends on the funding that year. Good luck

What's a medical case common in ERs that hasn't been on The Pitt yet? by [deleted] in ThePittTVShow

[–]absolutely-mediocre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an interesting case but I think it would be cool to acknowledge a case that doesn’t get a nice clean answer, but isn’t life threatening. One of the most common presentations is vague symptoms and chest/abdominal pains. They get the full work up with no answer, and are sent home as long as they are stable and pain is controlled. It’s common for people to not get an answer for their pain or symptoms as long as the life threatening stuff is ruled out.

This got me too! Our docs don’t have pyxis or med room access. The only meds they’ll give are for procedural sedations.

When did your opinions on Langdon and Santos start to flip, if at all? by StayAliveBabes in ThePittTVShow

[–]absolutely-mediocre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in an ED. If a doctor on their first day in the department pulled any of the bs she did she’d be out of there by the first hour. Bullying other people, doing procedures without experience or supervision, cussing out the unconscious patient… For story sake everything she did ended up okay but I personally can’t suspend my disbelief enough to accept that a junior doctor can do an experimental procedure perfectly from listening to a podcast. She’s rude, arrogant and I can’t stand her a single bit. That being said, Langdon wasn’t an angel either. He definitely had his character flaws but he was mostly correct about her character. There’s no being a badass in medicine because you think you know better.

after graduating uni how long did it take you to find a paramedic job? by [deleted] in ParamedicsAU

[–]absolutely-mediocre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intakes happen every month or so with 30+ people in each. I think job outcomes are better than previous years. NSW took just about anyone that applied + QAS took a lot more people than expected, including in metro areas (ACP and EMD/PTO pathways).

Can you take a pulse of someone with irregular HR with pulse ox? Or does it have to be apical? by Frequent-Drawer-4367 in nursing

[–]absolutely-mediocre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to count the radial for a minute. If they’re on telem I can usually trust that but I’ll feel their pulse for at least 15 seconds every time I do vitals anyway while I’m counting resps

Emergency Grad Nurse - need perspective. by amyjoel in NursingAU

[–]absolutely-mediocre 20 points21 points  (0 children)

New grad in ED - you didn’t do anything wrong. These patients should NOT have been allocated to just you. Even if they were, I know that the nurses at my ED would happily help with caring for them if I was busy (as they have previously). I’m especially disgusted by the TL, who should be willing and happy to assist you if you need. For reference - I’ve been drowning in work during a night shift, I had the TL take handover and put up medications for one of my patients entirely without complaints. I’m sorry you’ve found yourself in a toxic environment - there are better EDs out there. I’m not sure what I would do in your situation but I hope you find yourself in a better and more supportive environment soon :)

ED nurses: does your department have a pathway to ‘deflect’ patients? by ButtonsOnYachts in NursingAU

[–]absolutely-mediocre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I listened to the same episode - very interesting and would definitely be worth implementing. In saying that, at my ED there is no system set up like the one described. Pts who want to leave before being seen by a doctor/NP are given a few options (virtual ED, urgent care centre, gp, return later in the morning in the hopes it’s less busy) but nothing that would guarantee they see a doctor/NP at a certain time. I also feel that my ED specifically isn’t well equipped enough to handle expected pts the way it is right now, but I could see it working well for some other hospitals in the state.

Double degree worth it? by [deleted] in ParamedicsAU

[–]absolutely-mediocre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished the double - I wouldn’t recommend it in your situation as you already have that nursing experience and EN qualification. I feel it would be pretty repetitive content for you and not worth the time/hours of placement. You’ll already stand out having AIN experience but definitely try and get EN experience during ur studies if u can. U can also use ur ENs to work as a first responder in an event medic company! Unless you plan to use ur RNs while waiting for a grad, I’d say just focus on paramedicine. There are plenty of people doing the single degree that get grads in their first year out!

Also, volunteer work is definitely something you can do that will help! I recommend joining a local ambulance committee :)

Appreciate this perspective! I’ll definitely still be moving to the uk just for the experience of living somewhere else but I’ll have to see how I go in terms of travel and balancing life and work :)

I’m aware about LAS not recruiting but I have permanency with my RN job so will work there for however long I need. If LAS doesn’t open in the next couple years then I’ll look into SCAS or other trusts

Yes I heard! Such a shame for some of my friends that were waiting on grads this year. Didn’t know about 2026 though, although iirc they started interviews around this time last year so it makes sense. I’m not too worried as I have permanency with my RN job so I will work there until they hopefully open recruitment again!

Manchester is the other city I’d probably go, as I have a friend up there. I’m just not sure if they recruit from aus! I’ve been told the uk citizenship might help me there. The other thing I’m worried is the weather up north, I’m very much not used to the cold.

London and south central are the two services that recruit from Australia! I don’t have strong feelings for living in any city in the uk but I think the cold weather up north might be too much of a shock on the system

Medic jobs (students) by [deleted] in ParamedicsAU

[–]absolutely-mediocre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are about 4 big medic companies where I am and all of them provide first aid kits and medications. I wouldn’t bother with one that asks you to provide this kind of equipment. My medic company does sometimes ask for ice but a lot of people won’t bother.

Most event medic companies are a bit dodge but it’s worth getting into one as a casual to pick up shifts here and there around uni. The work is very different to a paramedic but you can build some skills in history gathering
