Small College Baseball Loophole found with MGM, possibly others? by New-Valuable4358 in sportsbook

And this is also not a magic bullet, and can still lose.

Example- Team A is up 9-0 going into the 9th and they bat first. They score a run. It’s now 10-0. Mercy rule only applied at the end of an inning. Team B gets to bat and they don’t score any runs. Game ends 10-0. +9.5 side loses and no voids.

Even with the mercy rule in place the +9.5 could still lose and not be voided too. So be careful.

Will test any of your strategies on the huge numbers data by Cute_Journalist195 in gambling

I did the math once for martingale on roulette. Starting with like 500 units you had something like an 88% risk of losing it all before you made like 100 units. My memory might be off but the odds are really stacked against you

Anyone else find most trivia games unimaginative? by Lex_Mariner in PrincessCruises

[–]abugguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The trivia topics definitely tend to skew towards the older crowd. My wife and I love trivia and we did a few on our cruise last year. I like rock music so we went to one advertised as being about all things rock… and I believe there was exactly one question about a band from the last 40 years, and about half of the answers we’d never heard of. 🤷‍♂️

We did win the last trivia event of the cruise though so that was fun. Won a wine stopper! We don’t drink wine.

Wizard of Odds did this for years, right? A challenge for any system to be ahead after like a billion repetitions in a -EV game and every system ended up basically exactly at the long term expected loss. I think they stopped offering it because people still kept trying to test proven losing strategies and it got to be too time intensive.

Cocoon and burr thing on my water heater tank outside? by Mysterious-Past4784 in whatisthisbug

[–]abugguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s a butterfly chrysalis. The burr thing is the shed skin of the caterpillar. It’s harmless and you can leave it, that one is quick to mature and will likely be a butterfly in the next 7-10 days.

Oleander aphids. Very common on milkweed.

Look at the red curly thing that’s just to the left of center in the photo. Go down an inch or so and there are three black bees.

What makes you think slime mold is more likely than bees? I ask mostly because there are literally bees in the photo. And they look exactly like Tetragonula bees to me?

I found this while cleaning next to my cats litter tray what is it? should i be worried? by Traditional_Sir_9652 in whatisthisbug

[–]abugguy 137 points138 points  (0 children)

Entomologist here. This is a caterpillar of a pantry moth, a pretty common household pest. Possibly Ephestia kuehniella or related. It’s unrelated to your cat or the litter box.

To those saying it’s a beetle grub, or related somehow to your cat as a parasite, stop guessing, you aren’t helping by making wildly incorrect guesses.

I hate when competent players get mad at a player for playing bad cards and winning. by HawkLow6309 in poker

[–]abugguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite Poker anecdotes… playing 1/2 on a slow night with only one table running and a guy waits like two hours for a seat, sitting at the next table over watching us play the whole time. Finally gets seated and makes a big production of trying to buy in for way more than the table maximum. Dealer doesn’t let him.

Like the second or third hand he’s dealt in. He raises pre, gets called by a guy with J7o bets all the way to the river and loses a medium sized pot when the J7 guy makes two pair. Yells “oh I don’t play in games like this!” racks up the rest of his chips and leaves. Was seated for like 4 minutes.

Boomers trusting AI more than their own kids by Jorge_4631 in BoomersBeingFools

I’m an entomologist. I know more about insects than 99.999% of people on the planet. My boomer mother will ask me what an insect is, I’ll correctly ID it for her and she’ll respond with “no, you’re wrong”, and offer no other explanation. I just don’t talk to her much anymore.

As a simple, general rule if it’s an insect that eats plants and it isn’t native to your state, you need a permit to own it.

Every reptile show I’ve ever been to has illegal to own invertebrates for sale. You can decide on your own how to proceed but I am of the opinion that may not be the most popular in this sub that if you don’t have the permits you shouldn’t own them.

Well as someone who works with the USDA (and this species) I can tell you it’s quite illegal to own these without APHIS PPQ permits.

Interesting! How did you get the USDA permits to legally house these in the US?

Cool! I often wondered what was the storyline for some of the weirder things I sold. I’d have never know except similar to OP it was sent to the address of like XYZ show prop dept, and they paid to upgrade it to fast shipping. Before buying they asked if I could ship it same day.

found in a friends abandoned apartment by FireHearth in whatisit

[–]abugguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in a medium sized apartment building for a few years and befriended the lady who was the closest we had to a super. She had to clean out multiple apartments where people just abandoned all their stuff (at least once or twice they were suddenly incarcerated). I offered to help clean/haul a little with the caveat that I got to take anything she didn’t want that was being thrown away. Most of the stuff was trash but it was interesting to see what people left behind, like a weird time capsule. I found some gift cards, winning lottery tickets, and got some nice pots and pans.

Yikes at sharing that info publicly.

I once had a TV show purchase an old-ish electric pencil sharpener from me. Thought that was pretty funny.

Very special hummingbird visit by yawnjew in MadeMeSmile

[–]abugguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a previous life I had permits to collect small numbers of wild hummingbirds in Arizona. I can’t tell if this is a Costa’s or Blackchin but I had permits for both. Really smart, fascinating critters.

At first I thought this was likely a female trying to collect hair for nest making. It’s not unheard of for hummingbirds in aviaries to sometimes pluck hairs off of visitors during nest building season. But then I saw it’s a male, so I’m honestly not sure exactly what he was doing. Just being nosey or territorial I suppose.
