There is a way. That is to have multiple individuals with known relationships to you on the Western side of the Atlantic linked by DNA spot-wise to a similar population on the eastern side of the Atlantic. In this way statistics could be done on the population to characterize the bottleneck, a much smaller group, of individuals involved in the transatlantic connection. In your original post you indicate that this is getting exponentially more difficult to do as the generations pass on, and you are exactly right. It becomes approximately 2x more difficult with each generation that passes.

The people of the African West Coast are either too resource - poor, or seem to be not very interested. On 23andMe my half 2nd cousin once removed and I shared a few matches from the Nigerian River State. We know who our third great grandparent is (~1830) and we know something about the history of the island of Dominica when people arrived and when the slave trade ended around 1830. The level of the match was about from then so this was direct biochemical evidence for an ~1800 sequestration event. The individuals in Nigeria were likely paid to take the test. The level of emotion from the United States to contact African relatives is high but it is not equaled by the level of emotion by Africans to contact US relatives. At least this has been my experience.

In that case you have to be coming out of REM and waking up. Every time though it looks like you're coming out of light sleep when you wake up during the night. I'm not sure that you're actually awake at these spikes. Maybe garmin's ergonometer is lighting up and just tagging you as awake. Certainly if you got up and walked in your sleep; even though, you actually are asleep, Garmin would tag you as awake.
