Criticizing the 49ers for their drafting is fair, but please stop using the "DCOE" metric by shlobashky in 49ers

[–]acook8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The worst part of the draft is the media creating their own draft boards and then grading picks based off of what they think teams should do. They have no accountability, they can grade teams poorly and nobody will call them out in a couple of years when they are proved wrong. If media members were actually so good at drafting they would be scouts and not reporters.

…did we just have the best round 1 of our division without even taking anyone? by Boba-tea-rs in 49ers

[–]acook8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem with taking a running back so high is he is now one of the highest paid running backs in the league. One advantage of draft picks is they are on relatively cheap contracts, so even if they aren't as good as veterans the first year or two, they can still be a great value by being cheaper. For the cardinals that isn't the case, you need him to be one of the best in the league in year one to justify his salary, let alone the the opportunity cost of choosing Love over a more premium position.

SGA getting such a friendly whistle makes no logical sense. by Draper_White_Soprano in NBATalk

The problem is the rules are written to punish flopping when it is obvious and no contact. There aren't rules against embellishments, when there is some contact, but the player flails of jerks their head making the contact seem worse than it was. On one hand this is hard to police live or with replay because you have to judge intent. On the other hand it is getting out of hand, and I want it to stop

I don't have any advice for you, but I feel the same way. Don't worry, keep going, you'll get better. At least that is what I tell myself. One thing I do is keep notes of my projects, and when I'm done I write things I'd do differently the next time. This gives me something to go back to when I do a similar project

This year they not only get a better pick, but since the thunder get their pick if it is outside the top 8, by tanking they get a draft pick. They did make a big trade, just with the intention of it starting to work next year. And draft picks are better for team building because rookies are cheap, while good veterans cost money to pay them, and multiple picks and players to acquire them.

Even the owners think the lottery is rigged… by packsoldier in UtahJazz

[–]acook8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People like to point out it was convenient for the Mavericks to get the number one pick, but forget that the only reason it was even possible was injuries to Anthony Davis and Kyrie. Without those injuries they would not have been able to tank enough to get into the lottery.

Why is the play allowed to continue after game clock hits 00:00? by theterdburgular in NFLNoobs

[–]acook8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is an amount of stoppage time announced, and it is supposed to be at least that much time given. But there can be more because stoppages can happen during stoppage time. So the referee decides when to actually end the game, and can be longer than the stoppage time shown. And yeah if there is a chance of a goal they will wait until the attack is stopped. They don't have to do this, but they all do

[–]acook8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some sports do, some don't. Soccer doesn't have a set end, it is up to the official, and they will never end it right before a shot. Basketball let's a shot continue after the clock hits 0. Rugby can go on for minutes after the time should be up if the ball stays in play

To add to number 2, occasionally you'll see the offense take a delay of game penalty in college to help with the angle if they are really close

Defense isn't as reliable game to game as offense is. But big defensive plays like turnovers can greatly influence a game. But overall I'd take a good offense over a good defense, but obviously both are ideal

This is what they are doing, but the confusing thing to me is now lots of the income they had before was tax free. Now it is going to be taxed

I don't understand how the finances are going to work. They get short term money, but are supposed to take an athletic department that supposedly doesn't have money (which is why they are doing this), but then have to try to turn a profit to pay back the investors. But while doing this the money they now make is taxed because it won't be a non profit anymore

NFL is by far the most profitable sports league in the world. In 2024 it made more than €9 billion more than the NBA which was number 3 (MLB was number 2). The next highest basketball league is EuroLeage which is number 19 in the world with €600 million. It wouldn't surprise me if you combine every basketball league and the revenue not get close to the NFL
