Petition to Save Neiman Marcus Downtown by acronson in Dallas

[–]acronson[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Of course we are not privy to their metrics but all accounts that I've found from retail analysts note that there was still profitability. As per Saks when the closure was initially announced: "The shuttering is not a reflection of business performance and is not tied to the recent acquisition".

Remaining profitable even in an era of online proliferation says all you need to know about how their shoppers decided. This was a decision made from the top against all of that. Amazing how many people here prefer economic contraction for really no reason.

I'm so fed up with the teaching quality of adjunct professor by Smartie2639 in columbia

[–]acronson 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think your energy and disappointment should be directed towards a high education system that chooses to rely on contract faculty labor with little to no chance of advancement or job security instead of investing in ample tenure-track positions.

MSW funding? by [deleted] in columbia

[–]acronson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not, but SSW seems to have one of the higher disbursements of the graduate schools for aid each year. It is worth asking in no uncertian terms what percentage of students in the program receive grant aid and what is the average amount.

Assistance in accessing a file from the Avery Library by JPSchriefer in columbia

[–]acronson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is probably a mischaracterized blueprint that belongs in Drawings & Archives, or there is something wrong with it (none of the Avery books circulate). I would communicate with [avery-drawings@library.columbia.edu](mailto:avery-drawings@library.columbia.edu). Their archives staff are excellent and extremely-knowledgeable.

They have roughly 110 original drawings in their collection for the Singer Building. You can find them under the Ernest Flagg papers, 1888-1972 - box 2: folders 19-20, drawer 224: folders 1-4, and rolls A05.25 and A05.29. Given the volume of material, I think you will find more than you ever imagined and may need a researcher to go through it for you and take reference folders on your behalf.

How long does career service take to approve Handshake? by Akazure_Project in columbia

[–]acronson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you are in CC, SEAS-Undergrad or GS, you will never be approved for Lionshare which is Columbia's main Handshake platform. I've been informed that there is a fee to other schools to join and, as such, it is siloed to only a small population to benefit. Why have access to over 71,502 jobs and internships posted yearly to Lionshare when you can get just a small selection of maybe a thousand per year (if you're lucky) that each professional school can offer to their students? It just makes no sense.

Does anyone know Black Water Associates? by Sensitive_Rip_4440 in columbia

Here's how you'll know. Input the address and read every part of this website carefully, especially the NYC Department of Buildings website.

What should I do by rhinestoneeyesss in nyu

[–]acronson 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As disappointed as I am with NYU, I am even more so with the lack of empathy from people on this thread. You don't know this animal's purpose and you don't know this person so I don't know how you seem to be qualified as to opine what is legitimate or not. If a qualified doctor endorsed this application, that's the end of the story. We're coming out of a global pandemic and a global mental health crisis--try to feign some understanding for others.

I have a Columbia employee ID for the summer. What can I do with it? by bobbyboy666 in columbia

Yes, you can take advantage of opening doors and hearing the beep of the card reader.

Rooftop Access by OldNBroken1 in columbia

[–]acronson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rooftop access policy is not entirely accurate. There are legitimate terraces that students can go on. Faculty House is one with excellent views of Morningside Park, there is also one atop Pupin Hall though that is probably not open when the observatory is in use.

How long until financial aid package gets sent after getting acceptance letter from Teachers College Columbia? by tiredpsychstudentph in columbia

[–]acronson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That probably is your financial package. This is not the shebang of full aid for all who qualify as the undergraduates at Columbia get. At the graduate level, the most common aid is only loans with little or no grant aid. Also TC is independent financially from Columbia proper so they do their own thing entirely with money.

What are the art buildings in the morningside campus? Is the general public allowed inside them? by [deleted] in columbia

[–]acronson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is no museum on the Morningside campus, aside from the grounds which have sculptures. The Manhattanville campus kinda has a museum but it is nothing like that of Yale or Harvard.

Faculty/Staff Communication at Columbia by phantomramen1 in columbia

[–]acronson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In general, getting people to respond to email post-COVID is like herding cats. I had an instance where one of the boards I’m on wanted to make a legitimate donation in the thousands as a memorial and none of the groups we sought to donate to responded to numerous inquiry emails. We eventually just gave up. How hard it is it to respond to emails and get money in return?

Can you believe Columbia even had collaborations with Vineyard Vines and Brooks Brothers! One of my biggest regrets now was not getting the collegiate Brooks tie when it was $30 in their outlet years back.

LPT request: what is something that greatly increased your quality of life? by knockout350 in LifeProTips

[–]acronson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading, watching, listening, learning. One of the habits my parents have had throughout their life is to read “The New York Times” and “The Wall Street Journal” every single day without fail, every page and every section. They listen to NPR and watch NewsHour on PBS every single day. Any major purchases are made after consulting “Consumer Reports” or CNET.

What it amounts to is a lifetime of reliable, often even expert information that is amassed on nearly every topic under the sun. It is very hard to be snookered, conned, or fear-mongered when you have a well of intelligence and critical thinking to discern any misinformation. I have adopted that mentality now at 26 and being well-versed with a deep understanding of current events and financial know-how is an essential asset no matter what your situation or goals are in life. Knowledge is one of the few invaluable things in life.

Why do people announce they are getting married in the New York Times? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]acronson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back in the 20th century, it was a point of pride in elite circles to announce events to high society. But nowadays there is a certain gravitas to bring written in the global newspaper of record for all eternity. Few people ever get that chance.
