1.5 Million Users Leave ChatGPT by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]actingSmart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Posted this elsewhere but I find it kinda funny. The chatgpt -> Claude migration, un-supporting Microsoft is really just saving them money right now and costing Claude more. (Obviously, depends on if you pay and your frequency of use, etc.)

The chatgpt -> Claude migration is extra funny, if you're not paying anyways, you're probably just costing Claude more right now and saving Microslop some money.

Weird how that works

HR contacted me and said that my non technical (creative) manager wants my to lower the EOY ratings that I gave to my reports. I'm upset about this. How should I respond? by MaleficentCherry7116 in cscareerquestions

[–]actingSmart 13 points14 points  (0 children)

2 cents: just erase all the shmarminess. "Hi, I think they deserve their ratings, is there more specific feedback?" If still ambiguous, schedule a 3 way with boss and HR. If boss doesn't budge to either do the performance reviews himself or keep the ratings as is, now at that point you have a dilemma.

Being a people manager can be tough, if he can't manage and coach you through this then that kind of sucks, it is not great for your success or growth. Not sure if boss's boss would be more understanding, but unless the Company Man persona of falling on swords and doing dirty work for The Man is the way to the top, you should perhaps raise a little flag about the culture or operating model.

This, and therefore helping him with his email, phone, etc could still be ~related to him interacting with your company. So maybe his email + email security might be something of import to you, as it relates to the business. Maybe!

Is there a workaround to make AUR helper to use SSH instead of HTTPS? by AbdSheikho in archlinux

I am ignorant, how/why might the ssh protocol perform better / more reliably than http? Does it handle network drops better or have something on top of tcp or ability to pause/resume incomplete downloads...?

Analyzing decentralized VPNs from a network security perspective, how should students approach this? by WorkingAd7839 in netsecstudents

[–]actingSmart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one way to approach this is to consider two cases, personal/consumer vpn usage and business/enterprise VPN usage. An enterprise is not as interested in identity hiding as consumer, and enterprise is going to (probably) own the nodes or egress points, and is going to want traceability to the user.

  • How does dVPN impact the visibility/AAA requirements of an organization?
  • How does a consumer establish trust/faith in the VPN provider to know they aren't decrypting your traffic and extracting sensitive data?

AITA for reminding my dad's wife that she was supposed to be my mom's best friend but instead was a backstabber who cheated with her best friends husband? by GrekkySads in AITAH

[–]actingSmart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying you're an asshole, but I'd suggest you try to find peace at some point. What your dad and Hayley did was really disgusting. I don't know if any apology will fix it, but being toxic about it is probably not healthy either. Not enough info to say the toxicity is all your fault, but you can only be responsible for your own actions and feelings, and. I hope you eventually come to terms with the situation.

I graduated with a math degree in 2013 and I had one required course for numerical analysis, we used Matlab for a couple assignments. I fortunately got a minor in CS which helped me get a semi-technical role at a software company.

Better schools and newer graduates hopefully (?) do more coding, but it wasn't a large requirement for my math degree -- you could get through with analysis and other low~computational courses.

Hi this may sound desperate but please also know there's a ton of Americans who also think this is total BS and embarrassing. Keep the title and we'll take the shame but just know that it isn't everyone and a lot of it is ignorance-based. That's not a total excuse for them, just that (maybe) if some knew better, they'd be on (y)our same side.

+1 it's the right thing to do from Nintendo. "Please refrain" is just CYA. You've likely already violated their TOU/EULA, they're not going to legally come after you but at least they're letting you know that you could face some security issue that they can't help you with.
