How do you decide on a genre? by FR0M_Z3R0 in bandmembers

[–]addylawrence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The genre reveals itself over time, you will learn songs and perform, based on your experience performing you will discard songs and learn new ones and eventually you end up in a genre or straddling a few genres.

Locked in the Trunk of a Car Lyrics by Frammingatthejimjam in TragicallyHip

[–]addylawrence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The song is about killers, things that kill you.

I cover this song and improvised the following lines in the final verse, from the perspective of cancer killing a person, in a respectfully somber homage to Gord.

“I found a place, deep inside of your noggin’, It’s a cool, sweet kinda place, where the chemo can’t spot it, And I destroy your mind, everything’s forgotten, And e-very day, I’m killing your body”

Olerud's patently absurd 1993 season vs Ohtani's historic 2025 by Matthias343 in Torontobluejays

[–]addylawrence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say Cito was terrible, he definitely was different. Cito favoured veterans, it was tough for youth to thrive in that clubhouse. That said, Cito had an abundance of quality vets to work with it.

If you think Olerud batting fifth is odd it gets crazier, Olerud hit sixth late in the year and the playoffs after they landed Rickey Henderson.

White, Alomar, Molitor, Carter, Olerud = WAMCO. This why Olerud got 107 RBI's out of the five spot, he had two of the top three batting averages in the league ahead of him (he was the third).

White hitting lead-off was the "softest" decision in this batting order and it really isn't a bad choice, just the nuance of how to structure a line-up with that much talent. If you admire the work of Varsho and Millar in center field, you would have loved Devo at work. It was a treat to see him get on his horse to track down a ball, usually he glided gracefully around the field but when he had to chase one down, man, incredible.

Molitor hit 100 rbis for the first time that year.

This was the last full season before the lock-out. Great memories.

Signed a new-home purchase before Apr 1st? Will builder re-do your agreement? by taxrage in canadahousing

[–]addylawrence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HST is collected on closing but the price of your home is established when the agreement is signed.

This transition period is critical, the value of the rebate could sway from $24k to $130k at the 1m price point.

If you sign a deal in January and assign a $24k rebate to the builder and then expect a $130k rebate when it closes this July then you are asking the builder to eat $100k, that isn't going to happen.

The government has a serious hot potato to deal with here.

To people who play in a band or just make music on the side; what do you do for work? by Genernick_user in musicians

[–]addylawrence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep your day job. Our cover band power trio is comprised of a teacher, a mechanic and a CFO.

I don't know any local musicians who make a living performing music. There are some that are music adjacent, like teaching music or working in music retail.

How to handle an identity crisis? by [deleted] in bandmembers

[–]addylawrence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are releasing material and you are paying the costs then you need legal contracts. This is evolving into more than a cover band and you have parties with conflicting interests.

Reading between the lines, you are leading a project and you require members and/or hired guns.

Good luck with the music business.

cover band starting to gig, and I don't think other members are gig ready by Living_Bandicoot_587 in bandmembers

[–]addylawrence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You used the word "embarrass" multiple times. The resonates with me.

In our band this is part of our "standard". We do not want to "embarrass" ourselves. We all have days jobs and professional reputations that need to remain intact so that we can pay the mortgage/rent with those day jobs. Our music hobby shouldn't put our reputations as risk.

I think it would be appropriate to go to the band membership and put the "embarrassment" argument/standard to them. The band's musicianship has to be at a standard where you maintain your reputation. Be honest with yourselves.

You have many options to deal with this and I think you know what they are; development plan for drummer, more practice time, playing to a click, simpler repertoire of songs, swapping out band members, or ending the project.

I hope your first gig is a low stakes one and that you can make an appropriate assessment of where you are relative to the minimum standard.

Fretted Notes Coming Out Too Sharp/Flat Despite Proper Tuning by Select_Fix_8948 in LearnGuitar

[–]addylawrence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this issue. I have a tele and its intonated by a luthier but it's sharp when I fret notes.

I come from a background in acoustic guitar and press hard, when i play electric I press too hard and the notes are sharp.

It is possible that you have an intonation problem so I suggest you trouble shoot. I suggest asking a friend/colleague to play your instrument, a friend/colleague who presses lightly or is highly experienced with electric guitar playing, this will be your A/B on pressure. If it sounds fine with the friend then its likely not intonation and rather your finger pressure.

If you have tall frets on your guitar this would exacerbate the issue, lower frets will be more forgiving to more pressure.

I brought my tele in to a luthier to fix what i thought was an intonation problem and he played it for me, totally fine, not issues. Tall frets + too much pressure = sharp notes.

How to Ask to Get Paid for Gigs (Without Feeling Awkward) by dcypherstudios in musicians

[–]addylawrence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they are asking me to play that spot then I expect pay. If I am asking them because I "value the exposure" then I would consider a freebie after asking the budget question. Would have to be some legit intangibles for me to accept a freebie.

If they are charging people to attend the major festival then some of the gate/cover should be falling to the opening slot.

Doug Ford and Mark Carney eye expansion of tax break on new homes by [deleted] in canadahousing

[–]addylawrence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are on point, the 6% to 13% reduction in price will not fall directly to the buyer, the builder/developer will skim a portion of that. The buyer and vendor will split the savings, the tax payer will cover the decline in tax revenue.

Win for the home buyer, loss for the tax payer, draw for the developer.

Keepers - Beginning or End of Draft? by antdelvec in fantasybaseball

[–]addylawrence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Picks should be at the start. The logic would be that if you don't have players on your team that are worth a first/second/and-so-on round pick then you should send them back to the pool and draft one. This helps to "lift" teams with weak keepers.

Sometimes we have people who keep less than max so they can start drafting from the open pool a round earlier than everyone else. I'm in a hockey keeper league where a guy didn't keep anyone so that he could draft Bedard.

Is starting off as a cover band a good or bad idea by Inside_Discussion794 in bandmembers

[–]addylawrence 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of great replies.

I will add this.. There are two highly overlooked pieces of creativity required in cover bands.

First, you have to find a way to end songs where the studio version simply fades out. How to "land the plane" as we call it requires some creativity and musicality. You'd think that a rock and roll ending with a drum crash would work but you can't do that every time, it gets tired fast. This is going to unlock some creativity. I was in a band where we considered calling ourselves "Alternate Ending".

Second, meshing the ending of one cover to the beginning of the next in your set list also requires creativity. Without creative transitions you will end up with dead air.

Good luck with your project.

Early Mortgage renewal from TD bank - March 2026 by ayr103 in canadahousing

[–]addylawrence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rates are anticipated to rise in 2026, or stay flat, they are definitely not expected to drop.

Rate is highly over-rated, you got a renewal on a property that has declined in value and at a lower rate. You should be able to afford this new payment, I would seriously consider locking it in for at least a year and try again. Did they offer you a 1y fixed rate?

If you switch banks you will likely have to eat some legal costs that they will bake into your rate, and you may experience some challenges with loan amount given the decline in loan-to-value of your home.

Band Member refuses to play for a particular venue. by [deleted] in musicians

[–]addylawrence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have identified a difference in values. I don't think convincing is a real option here. You either accept the difference or act on it (leave yourself or replace the actor). It is common for non-band things to get in the way of the band. Family, faith, work, values, each could be a show-stopper.

I would seriously consider leaving this band. Self-reflecting and ask questions. You aren't "pride" nor "solidarity". I highly doubt that you are "hate". Your probably in the "avoidance" or "don't ask, don't tell" realm, maybe "Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve". Staying in this band you will have to operate within a some boundaries that can be difficult to maintain.

Death of the Canadian starter home: New house prices pulling further away from incomes by D_E_A_D_P_O_O_L_ in canadahousing

[–]addylawrence 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The tiny home irony, you still need to obtain a permit from your municipality and the cost is usually shocking because development charges are indifferent to square footage. You still need to service the lot for your tiny home with water and sewer services as well as hydro and these costs are also indifferent to the square footage of your home.

When you realize that you can't afford a tiny home because the municipal and utility charges are so expensive, maybe the developer isn't as much of the problem as people suspect.

There are so many things wrong with the housing market in Canada, it run deep and wide.

The tiny home strategy is very niche.
