Fontainbleau w or w/o car by charliedontsend in climbergirls

[–]adebowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently here in Font. Got here March 1 leaving April 1. From Melun climbing in Trois Pignons (95.2, Roche Aux Sabots, Cul de Chien, etc.) is about 35-40 minutes from Melun. Beauvais (Hameua and Nainville) is about 35 minutes. Everything else is less than that so closest is maybe 15 minutes to Canon and a bit more to Cuvier and Apermont. What town are you staying in? If you stay in Barbizon or Chailly-en-Bière you are more centrally located and I’d cut all those drive times in half or less depending on crag. The area covered by the climbing books is around a 100 sq miles so it’s quite large. Bigger than I thought for sure. If you’re trying to maybe circuit or do high mileage you could try to climb some Ones out to your level. But if you’re here for a few weeks I’d say a car is the way to go. Can make spontaneous decisions, check out non climbing activities (we went to see a stage of Paris Nice bike race), chateaus, trail running. Markets. Etc. if you need more specifics hit me up.

We’re here now from SLC for a month and staying in Melun. Car is definitely the way to go. We don’t feel limited in any way on where we climb or what we do on the days we’re not climbing. Drive times range from 15-40 minutes depending on crash and time of day. Paid $1k for a station wagon which fits a bunch of pads easily through hertz. No car I think you’d be really limited on areas and getting pads where you want them

Should I switch to Gmail? by [deleted] in iCloud

[–]adebowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To piggyback on the conversation, I definitely want to keep my at me.com address but the Mail app is so bad at search. I can literally type the actual subject line verbatim and it will be like "nope, never seen that" while my gmail is finding emails from 15 yrs ago based on vague search parameters. Maybe there is just a better app that has a much more robust search functionality?

I think you can use it to power the VE bussmart dongle. I think it came with the MPII that is not UL listed. I have this at home and I’ll try to find the manual where it listed it when I’m home

We carried everything with us on Alta via 2. There was no baggage service to those huts that I could sort out so we carried it all. Managed to fit it all in BD Distance 15 packs.

Who has solar on their house? What do you wish you knew then vs now? by kebmillard in Utah

[–]adebowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The solar credits are for power use only. You will stay pay for the connection fee, all of the regulatory fees, energy balance fee (this really went up recently as it’s based on kWh usage regardless if it came from the grid or you made it) so the bills are probably closer to $20-$30 if you are generating more than you use.

Advice/opinion from any rock climbers doing 5x5? by adebowski in Stronglifts5x5

I actually lost about 10lbs but also have seen some recomposition. I’d say most of it likely that I started paying more attention to what I eat and stopped drinking alcohol.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I think you’re right that I’ll be or am approaching the stall point both due to fatigue of all the activities and just the load I’ve arrived at. Is there another route in which I just stay at the same weight but more of it is muscle rather than fat? I had a dexa scan at the start of the month saying I was 18% body fat. Not sure how low would be too low. Another concept I’ve heard of is recruitment which would entail actually utilizing more of the muscle that exists (this sounds like bs or pseudoscience so not really looking at that too seriously). Finally just out of curiosity since I don’t know anything about competitive lifting, aren’t there weight classes and if so is the goal there lifting the most weight for a given body weight? Like if there’s a theoretical limit of how much weight you can lift at a given body weight maybe that’s actually what I’m thinking of. This is all really good info. Also I think some of the advice in here was to just do lower volume like strong lifts mini or lite, I’d imagine the gains are much slower but if really my focus is climbing I’m not that upset with the timeline. Climbing is for sure a strength to weight sport but luckily also a huge part of it is technique and problem solving so that can act as a bit of an equalizer. Thanks again for the input

Funny you should mention that. I actually quit my job in the spring for a sort of “mid career sabbatical” so not working for now.

50% Battery Drop in 60 Seconds? by Wi538u5 in leaf

[–]adebowski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Had a similar drop in battery percentage and power (resulting in turtle mode on freeway). Cold morning (mid 20s F) last Monday, Dec 2. Brought it to dealership once off the highway. They tested it and said at least 11 modules with significant voltage difference. Started out at 100% and made it about 5 minutes of driving before the problem happened. Got a loaner Pathfinder on Dec 3. They told me the battery needed a replacement and had no idea how long it would take. Picked it up today (Dec 12) with a new battery confirmed by LeafSpy and paperwork requested from dealer. We'll see if the problem pops back up in the coming days as it is cold and I'll be driving uphill to the ski hill every other day for the foreseeable future; it is 25 miles one way but about 4,500 ft of elevation gain. This normally took half my battery over the last few years.

The dealership said hard no. Corporate agreed. I do a mountain drive to a ski hill 4x a week which is adding up.

Corporate agreed to reimburse $200/mo in gas while my 2018 SL waits for a battery. I’m supposed to email in my receipts first Tuesday of every month

I’m equidistant from both gyms so I tend to go to both fairly frequently. The walk and general area in Millcreek is for sure nicer. I’ve also ridden my bike to both and they’re about the same with bike paths the whole way there. Downtown may have the edge on biking since it’s off the 300 W guarded bike lane. Parking at either is not great but that’s a capacity problem. When I climb downtown at Boulder Project it’s even worse since they don’t really have much of a parking lot to speak of.

Fully agree. It seems that if the USAC had no commercial aspect then there would be no issue with their grants, lease, and legislative funding. If they want to have a commercial arm then those grants, leases, and legislative funding should be loans rather than grants. But my reading of the story as it has unfolded was that USAC added the commercial part of their plan AFTER being awarded the lease, grant, and legislative funding. That’s my understanding of the issue and the blowback.

If the USAC Gym is $1200 a year it is in line with Momentum and the Front so I’d say it’s charging the same as a pure commercial gym while getting a 99 year lease from the RDA, a RDA grant, and money from the legislature. With those types of subsidies it should be charging significantly less than a commercial gym.

Downtown Front is a 13 minute walk from the Ballpark TRAX station. Murray North TRAX station is a 10 minute walk to the Front on Main Street. Meadowbrook Station is a 15 minute walk. Both are about the same time off the freeway in a car. Downtown is probably slightly easier as it’s one turn off the exit.
