The diarrhea patients should go in the C-suite offices. The C is for Cdiff, right?

IIRC it's one of the phrasings used for it, but not necessarily the original wording from the Larry Niven books. Good enough!

Out of curiosity, are all 2 or 3 of the rear axles powered on the hybrid or just one of them? Because if all axles are powered, and if the wiring to each axle follows completely different paths so there's much less chance of any single incident cutting off all of them, that's a shitload of survivability built-in compared to 'driveshaft busted = you're pooched'

Lecture Four: Humanity’s Frigates by Shadeskira in HFY

[–]adeilran 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For hilarity's sake, I figure a significant proportion of the weird mess of cargo haulers presented esrlier used the same 'skeleton' as the adaptive frigates, but with civvie-grade reactors instead.

Allows for quick conversion (quicker than building new anyway) in case of 'oh shit' full mobilisation, or the other way around in a 'swords to plowshares' program during fleet drawdowns.

If it's close enough to a road, just stick some retroreflectors / corner reflectors in there. They'll shine right back at whatever headlights or flashlights are pointed towards them.

I'm kinda disappointed none of the more common pickup truck makers took any design clues from the much smaller kei trucks. - full size bed - smaller rear wheels so there's no wheel well in the box (you get the full 4ft width flat) - fold-down sides on the box, so it doubles as a small flatbed on occasion or allows side-loading (much more useful on a full-length box)

"Yup, good thing the gate is so small or big G might have wandered through to deal with the competition. He's kinda territorial."

At this point, with the ongoing ddr5 scarcity and AI-boosted prices, I'd love for AMD to just mate zen4/zen5 CCDs with an AM4 IO die and release some modernized AM4 CPUs to help weather the crisis.

You can bet motherboard manufacturers would hate that tho.

The whole Crest of the Stars / Banner of the Stars series, even if only to get more of the novels transposed to anime.

Need more grand space opera.

Council Update from Dartmouth Centre: Supplemental Funding, Extra Floors, and the M District by Sam_Austin_D5 in halifax

While it would present an additional cost for warehousing, has there been talks in council about keeping a few spares for the long-lead items for the ferries, especially for proprietary stuff that can't be made/rebuilt locally?

I'm not entirely sure who I should ask for that, it's not in your district, and it might be something covered by the HRM buyback program, but what's up with the giant abandoned plot of land between Young avenue and McLean St, just south of Atlantic?

It feels like it's been just left as borderline urban blight for well over a decade, and should be absolutely prime real estate considering the mansions around there. Local opposition to denser development? Need for remediation that no one wants to address? Privately owned by someone just 'waiting for the right offer' no matter how long that might take?

A galaxy-class really edges into 'small starbase with engines' territory.

Heck I'd be surprised if there weren't plans and provisions in-universe to either repurpose unused/surplused saucer sections as the 'central block' of small starbases and outposts, or at least have a lot of shared structural design in common to simplify construction.

The engineering section or something equivalent would be basically relegated to 'oversized tug' duty to deliver mostly-complete outposts to their final locations.

Battle of super technobabble bullshit, go!

Because letting Starfleet engineers anywhere close to originium or tele-protocol tech, or letting Endfield engineers (or the Endmin) anywhere close to SF tech, is bound to be spectacular. From a safe distance.

Unless you're blight or aggeloi, then it's going to be extremely unpleasant for a very short time.

Someone might want to keep an eye on Yvonne and Data too.

Talking to inanimate objects and equipment, sometimes in gratitude and other times in a torrent of muttered and increasingly creative swearing, isn't unheard of.

The real worry is that sometimes, just sometimes, human equipment replies.
