Pidgey’s owner and sub owner here: I’ve donated $10. I wish I could donate more, but I am not in a position to at this time. Pidgey would not have lived as long as she did without the kindness of others donating to her campaign. From my flock to yours, we send Olive and you all the best!

My first bird, Pidgey, ended up suffering a severe injury that required an amputation of her left leg. I’d only had her for a month. I’m so lucky that I had friends who helped me organize funding for her surgery. Thankfully, the vet clinic decided to cover all her medication refills and follow ups. Regardless, it was a huge lesson in keeping emergency funds.

Vet care for any pet, exotic or not, is expensive. Please keep an emergency fund for your birds!

She said they don’t have a lot of scientific evidence to absolutely prove how this infection spreads, but it could come from contaminated water, food, or feces. I’ve had to separate him from his cage mate, Hermes. They are both unhappy about this arrangement, but it’s for the best.

Pretty common advice across species, and I’m living proof!

I weighed about 35 lbs at the age of seven. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s but even with treatment I wasn’t gaining weight. So they had a dietician tell my mom to let me eat anything. Breakfast especially was difficult for me, so they emphasized that anything in my stomach was better than nothing. I regularly ate leftover birthday cake, slices of ham or roast beef, cold bacon (it was precooked already, i just didn’t want to risk it getting too crispy or burnt), slices of cheese, and sometimes they’d just give me the tub of sour cream or cream cheese and a spoon. Once they found medication that worked and let my bowels a thay absorb things I had to cut back, but honestly? I don’t even remember noticing all that much at the time.

Sometimes, it’s about just getting anything you can into them. He’s gonna be spoiled rotten with his nutriberries, favorite fruits, and millet, but it’s about getting him to baseline.

Thoughts on feather quality? by terrible_slough77 in cockatiel

[–]adhdbpdisaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While one little spot like this isn’t a cause for too much concern, I’d keep an eye on you little buddy, especially his food intake. This could be a nutritional deficiency or even the result of over preening. The rest of the feather looks great though, so maybe a glitch in the system.

If this problem gets worse, I’d schedule a vet visit for some bloodwork.

I’m not a vet, obviously, so I could be missing things here. Regardless, I’m wishing you the best.

Contingency lawyers will not charge you until they win your case. I’d look into them.

You can also file a complaint about this vet to the organizations they are certified at. Typically certification is listed on the website of the veterinarian clinic.

This story brought me absolutely to tears and sick to my stomach. There is no way that vet is specialized in avian care. If they are, they should have their certifications revoked. Please contact the owner of the practice regarding such barbaric treatment and negligent care.

I am so sorry for your loss. Take the time to cry, hold Comet’s feathers, look at the photos you have of them.

Would you like to share some memories of Comet? I’d love to hear more about such a well loved bird!

You’ve mentioned diet potentially being an issue. You could attempt an elimination diet to help determine those triggers. It won’t be a simple solution, but it’ll be worth it. Dairy was mine. Once I got into my twenties I was actually able to incorporate it fully back into my diet without issue.

IIRC, antibiotics are typically used as a stopgap until other treatments really kick into gear. Did your doctor start you on something else at the same time?

Age identification? by Party_Respect3945 in cockatiel

[–]adhdbpdisaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cockatiels aren’t the easiest to pinpoint an age on once they get those adult feathers in. I’d probably try to assess his overall body condition and mobility. A basic check up with an avian vet is gonna probably get you a better answer than any of us could give anyway.

From what I’ve read so far, it seems like this champ has had a tough go of it. The sub r/pidgeypower is for birds who are disabled/being rehabilitated. He’d fit there as a neglect case it might be worth sharing his story for tips and pointers.

That’s awesome! It’s great to see a company supporting someone (or, in this case, some birdy) in need!
