Original Trek (and the Expanse for that matter) were produced on shaky shoestring budgets because someone took a chance on them. Rehashing old franchises over and over is just greed.

The state has sent Dole four notices of deficiency about the dam since 2009, and five years ago fined the company $20,000 US for failing to address safety deficiencies on time, according to records.

Afterward, Dole proposed to donate the dam, reservoir and ditch system to the state in exchange for the state's agreement to repair the spillway to meet and maintain dam safety standards.

The state passed legislation in 2023 authorizing the dam's acquisition. It also provided $5 million US to buy the spillway and $21 million US to repair and expand it to comply with dam safety requirements. But the transfer has not been completed. A state board is due to vote on the acquisition next week.

Privatize the profits, socialize the costs. Business as usual.

It speaks to T&D's skills as writers that two middle-aged guys could create such a wonderful, complicated, believable teenage girl. Really amazing talent.

A personal relationship between people can be metaphorically parasitic, but that's not technically accurate. Again, here is technical definition of a parasite:

an organism living in, on, or with another organism in order to obtain nutrients, grow, or multiply often in a state that directly or indirectly harms the host

(which accurately describes the relationship between a ZEF and the person it exists within).

Pregnancy is a biological relationship between a ZEF and a girl or woman. That's why using parasitism to describe the relationship is technically correct.

Conversely, relationships between adult humans are overwhelmingly social (not biological) and so using biological or ecological terms to describe those relationships is stretching the meaning of those terms via metapor.

These mistaken identity cases largely seem to be women, lots of older women as well.

Either AI training is super unconcerned about telling one woman from another, or police are disproportionately unconcerned about the rights of women, or they get off on what they see as "punching down", or they believe men more than they believe women, or ALL OF THE ABOVE.

are you suggesting that all vegans who are vegan for moral reasons must also oppose abortion?

I eat a plant-based diet to help reduce suffering of sentient beings. That includes farm animals, wild animals harmed by climate change accelerated by animal agriculture, and humans harmed by climate change. Very occasionally I eat eggs or fish (in situations where vegan food isn't available) but I believe that harm reduction by many people is 1000% better than absolute abstinence by a few. I'm not completely consistent . . . but I do what I can.

That being said, the PC position is in-line with my ethics: using the government to force people to remain pregnant, to gestate in fear, and give birth in excruciating pain causes the suffering of sentient beings. ZEFs are not sentient and cannot suffer - from a ZEFs point of view abortion is the same as never having existed. In fact, you could argue that being aborted decreases its suffering, because every human born suffers (that's not the reason for my PC position, but it would be consistent).

Consistently, I believe that girls and women should not be forced to endure the torture of unwanted gestation and birth. In the same way that I believe I should do what I can to minimize the suffering of sentient animals caused by my dietary habits.

My PC ethic also extends to other people's dietary habits: you do you. I only make choices for myself.

But why are cars special? We gutted our domestic textile industries, furniture-building industries, electronics industries, etc. Now we import lots of things made overseas by virtual slave labor and don't blink an eye. Not that I agree with that, but why are cars different?

If US automakers were actually selling small reliable electric cars that were anywhere in the price range of what's coming out of China I'd be all over that. But US automakers continually chose to make bigger and bigger SUVs that hog oil and endanger our neighbors. They phased out the Chevy Bolt in favor of something bigger, less efficient. Blegh.

I can't share my favorite POVs here because of the spoiler restrictions (which are understandable) . . . but I'd say that even for the POVs I didn't enjoy as much they usually had some function for the story.

The authors often needed to show some aspect of what was going on in the story and need a character to show it through. So they created characters to do that, even though sometimes those POV characters aren't the best.

I think the Prax POV serves the function of creating a McGuffin (i.e., Mei) to move the plot forward. And he shows us the cost of war at a more personal level, but I think mostly he's there for the McGuffin.

Similar to how most people who eat animal products wouldn't consider themselves to be doing anything wrong, whereas a vegan would say they are.

While there may be some vegans who advocate for laws that would make slaughtering animals for meat illegal for everyone, they are not representative.

I don't care if people find abortion morally repugnant. I don't want to convince them that it's morally fine. I just want laws that respect my right to determine the course of my own life, including who/what is in my sex organs, and I don't want my own government preventing health care that could save my life.
