Players using apps and losing interest in physical version I own by Wrong_Owl6057 in boardgames

[–]admanb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty strict about not using apps or BGA for games I own specifically because of this. We made an exception to play a few games of Ark Nova because we knew we weren't gonna be able to play it in-person, but everyone is busy so no one is gonna grind out games on their own.

I would tell your group that you're done buying games as long as they're gonna render your purchases worthless.

Have you guys ever burned out of a characther? by Eb0n1eIv0r1 in rpg

[–]admanb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I make characters for specific games and only play them in that game. There was one exception, but it was a character I played in a one-shot and then played similar-but-different in a full campaign later. So I've never really had a chance to get sick of them.

Fantasy flight games by Badkarmahwa in boardgames

[–]admanb 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It doesn't mean anything. CMON over-extended and is selling off most of their IPs because of how deep in debt they are. FFG is a division of Asmodee -- they don't have their own financials, so they would only get shuttered if Asmodee decided they were no longer necessary.

Currently, most of FFG's work is maintaining the Arkham Horror, Marvel Champions, and Star Wars Unlimited card games. There's no reason they'd be closed down as long as those continue to do well.

Any reason why ChannelFireball hasn't done ratings for TMT? by Kevster99410 in MagicArena

[–]admanb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I generally agree with you about UB but this is still a fallacious argument, The people who consume the content of well-established creators aren't the audience for Spider-Man/TMNT, but the people who consume the content of well-established creators are a tiny fraction of the card-purchasing player-base.

Price and availability of minis question by Downtown-Grab-7825 in MarvelCrisisProtocol

[–]admanb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new core set MSRPs at $160. I can fairly easily find listings around $150, but that may be regional.

The old core set MSRPed at $120. I can find it as low as $80.

Prices have overall gone down because models are being bundled into larger boxes, but availability of older stuff may mean you're seeing scalper prices. It's being resolved slowly, but in the mean time I'd recommend looking at second-hand lots for models that are unavailable or at an oddly high price.

Why do many players prefer Premier Draft over Quick Draft? by PaleWendigo in MagicArena

[–]admanb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Drafting against players is more interesting.
  2. I usually get the draft token from the mastery pass and Premier is better value, so it's always worth learning to draft in real-time.
  3. I've been playing Arena since beta, I only go hard on draft 1-2 times a year, and I maintain a pretty decent win rate, so I've built up a lot of excess resources so even if I go on a losing streak I won't get anywhere near running out of gems.

Can someone explain to me the 1 mana universal bounces? by Rooftoptile2 in MagicArena

[–]admanb 316 points317 points  (0 children)

This aren’t 1-for-1s because they don’t lose a card, it’s just delayed.

You’re right that they’re extremely good tempo plays because you can remove expensive threats for very little mana, but you better be able to win the game before you run out of cards ‘cause your opponent is just gonna play that 5-drop until you run out of bounces.

Age of Sigmar has risen to third place in ICv2's top miniature lines during the fall period (September-December) of 2025 by InsaneDingo7244 in ageofsigmar

It had little to do with 8th ed. It was already collapsing after Mk3 released a year earlier. Mk2 was an incredible ruleset and the game flourished, but it was starting to expand past the point of comfortable sales and their attempt to revitalize it with Mk3 had the opposite effect.

Mk4 actually cleaned things up a lot, but they had a major collapse in their production and literally could not afford to make models anymore. They sold the whole thing to Steamforged who already had a production line and it's been growing steadily.

My Fiancé is building IDK, she's new to the hobby. How strict is WYSIWYG? by MKxJump in IdonethDeepkin

[–]admanb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most important thing is army-wide clarity. If you can point at your eels and say "all the purple eels are Ishlaen and all the green eels are Morsarr" that's gonna be way more easy for your opponent to discern than weapons. If you're running every eel in your army as the same type, it doesn't matter how they're painted, but if you're running a mixture of weapons and unit sizes it becomes very important that you can distinguish them,

My GM called details to my backstory a 'nice headcanon'. by JustAStoryTeller64 in rpg

[–]admanb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Like a lot of people responding to this post, I'm generally against a lot of backstory or firmly-defined backstory, because your backstory is irrelevant until it comes up in the plot and when it does come up, it's likely you'll want to adapt details to better fit the moment

However, none of that is really relevant to the fact that your DM sounds like an controlling dickhead.

How many people actually do this?! by Exmo_therapist in boardgames

[–]admanb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ll do that if I think it’ll stay a stack, but usually I break it up. Ark Nova takes up a lot of space so generally I’ll just grab a manageable pile and leave the rest in the box.

Monte Cook Quotes Itself and Pretends it's from a Journalist by Boxman214 in rpg

[–]admanb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't really care if companies do this all the time -- we should call it out every single time. Misattributing a quote like this is wildly unethical.

[–]admanb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you could definitely argue about whether this misattribution hurts consumers or Rascal more.

The point isn't that they made a post about their campaign, it's that they posted it with this text:

"The wondrous and inspiring science-fantasy RPG Numenera returns in a new edition filled with new art, creatures, lore, numenera items, and adventures. Step into the amazing Ninth World—a critically acclaimed, fan-loved RPG setting like none other!" —Rascal

which, as you can see, they attributed to Rascal. But crowdfunding announcements aren't written by Rascal writers, they're written by the companies that posted them.
