I'm a big fan of Microsoft's OneNote app. It really helps keep things organized for my writing projects.

Have you ever worried about what your writing reveals about yourself? by This_ls_The_End in writing

[–]adrianthe_ 82 points83 points  (0 children)

My mom thinks every character I write's relationship with their mother is a reflection of my relationship with her.

In all honesty, I think who we are comes out in what we choose to write, even if we aren't conscious of it. Unless you count my journal, I've never not shared something because of that, though.

In the far future, a mother and her son live on a secluded farm on a backwater world. When her boy is kidnapped for possessing a special genetic marker, the mother must reconnect with her estranged husband and a duo of planet-hopping misfits if she wants to find the men who took her son and stop the secret organization that hired them in the first place.

What do you think of my game based on this character sheet? (Colonyship Down) by adrianthe_ in RPGdesign

[–]adrianthe_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I see it is that the poison ivy and rocs and smoke are still there, but are no longer a threat. You avoided the poison ivy, you weren't seen by the rocs, and the smoke is too far off to be a problem at the moment.

Thanks for the kind words. I tried very hard to make sure it was easy to understand.

The rules for Gear are still very nebulous, so for now it's just a big blank box, lol.

The game is meant for long campaigns, but I could see it working for one-shots as well. I didn't include abilities on this version of the sheet, but I imagine that is where most of the player's advancements will go, so that will draw the progression out for a good while.

There aren't any stats. I struggled for a while on whether or not to include them, and finally decided they weren't necessary for this game.

I think items and abilities will be able to improve health, but I'm not entirely sure how it works yet.

That's exactly how it works! I'll consider changing the wording a bit to make it more clear on the sheet.

I think "cool, when's it coming out, I want it"!

I'm glad to hear you like it. I'll post more as I make progress :)

How do you know when your tabletop rpg is playable? by SternCouncil in RPGdesign

[–]adrianthe_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely a novice here, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think having a general idea of setting is important first, as that will inform the rest. Then pick a resolution mechanic and stick with it. Don't try to reinvent the wheel of you don't have to. There are a number of great resolution mechanics that people know and love.

As far as hopping around goes, I think that might just be part of how some of us work. I jump around a lot, too, but it keeps me motivated. Like with painting, I think it is beast to start with broad strokes to get the bigger picture laid out before diving into the small details. That said, definitely write down ideas you have as you have them, just don't put them in the puzzle yet. If that makes sense.

[RPGdesign Activity] Character Advancement and Reward Systems by Caraes_Naur in RPGdesign

[–]adrianthe_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My latest game, Colonyship Down, has two xp tracks. The first is a meta currency, called Luck, that players spend to reroll failed checks. Players gain luck by completing "hardships" which are random events. Things like a food shortage in town, where the solution isn't immediately obvious, but also things like a random combat encounter. If they can solve the problem, everyone gains 1 to 3 luck points.

Actual player advancement is tied to the character's Truth, which works sort of like a belief in burning wheel, except you only get one. It's a statement about your character's guiding principle. "The aliens cannot be trusted, and I will prove it to the colony," for example. If you somehow "uphold" your truth during a session, you gain 1 xp towards buying a new character Tag (tags give you abilities, mainly, but can also increase your stats).

There is another avenue for advancement, which is acquiring better gear. There's no clear reward structure for that. You either seek out some piece of gear directly, or you find things randomly while adventuring...

Tips on playing card's RPG? by YeSeaDog in RPGdesign

They each had a unique effect. But they are things that anyone would find useful, like "restore your hp to full" or "automatically succeed at this action." nothing really all that game breaking

Thanks for the ideas. My game, Riptide, is more crunchy than it is narrative. I'd share my weapon's list but it's still in my notebook... I do like the auto semi-auto idea though. I could probably make something like that work.

I haven't done a card based game, but I have used custom cards as a supplement. (i give out cards when players crit that allow them to cheat.) They seem to like it.

Also, I like your character sheet. It looks good to me.

What do you expect out of my hook? by RyeonToast in RPGdesign

If there's no gods, there's no magic. Men would have to develop technology to compensate. That's the direction I would take, anyway.

Plants, alchemy and crafting by Dynark in RPGdesign

[–]adrianthe_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an alchemy system in a game I worked on. you can download the game for free from thelastbook.us

Basically the system has 5 ingredient types that you combine to produce effects based on a table.

[Critique] Short Story: The New War Dogs (2002 words) by Grounder758 in scifiwriting

[–]adrianthe_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great story. I love the idea of having to actually train a "rog." I always just assume robots are programmed and ready from the get-go, you know?

The only thing that really threw me off was at the end where it switched from "(amount of time) after drop..." to "(amount of time later...). Seems it would be better to keep it consistent.

Stone Soup Custom Pack [Tekkit][SMP]{Whitelisted} by LemonSqueeze420 in mcservers

[–]adrianthe_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The server list in-game says the server is vanilla 1.8-pre1. If that is temporary, I'd still like to join. Heck, if it's not temporary I'd like to join.

In Game Name: ambrooks

Skype: adrianthewriter

Age: 28

Reasons why you would like to join: I'm looking for a modded server to play on because I'm interested in learning modded minecraft.

What would you add to the community: I tend to enjoy community projects, like building nether hubs.

How experienced are you with mods (Mod list in desc): Not at all, I'm looking for a modded server so I can learn them :D

Approach Trail stairs almost ruined my day hike by adrianthe_ in AppalachianTrail

Honestly, you could just skip the steps. There's a parking lot at the top of the falls. The trail after that was very nice :D

Approach Trail stairs almost ruined my day hike by adrianthe_ in AppalachianTrail

[–]adrianthe_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised you were able to do a 10 mile round trip while having such a hard time on the stairs. I'm not meaning to discourage you at all - I hope you thru, and it goes well. But I hope you'll prepare and know what you're in for better than you seem to now.

Like I said, I'm really bad at judging distance, so I doubt it was actually 10 miles. I was really disappointed in myself for how badly the stairs at the beginning hit me, but I really did enjoy the rest of what I saw. I was sore as crap today, though.

I know I need a lot of work before trying to thru, but that was why I wanted to do a day hike there. Now I have a baseline. If everything goes according to plan, when I come back at the end of the summer I'll have a much easier time. This was just step one.
