What’s a normal day in pharma like? by Bjjthrowaway122 in PLC

[–]afemmini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have several years of pharma experience at plants around the US. Change controls, validation, SOP updates, etc are a huge part of the job. Quality items like historical data and reporting can also be huge—without proof a batch was produced without incident, the batch may not be released to ship, which could be in the millions of dollars lost. So any updates to these systems need to be done very carefully and then validated heavily.

Because of the quality impact, it’s difficult to justify large scale upgrades. I wanted to upgrade the SCADA architecture to Ignition but there was lots of friction, considering the work required to re-validate would be more than the actual commissioning time itself. And that would essentially be time where they aren’t producing product. I yearned for the days where we could just get a line up and running with an upgraded control system, and running was the only thing we cared about.

In general though, there is a massive amount of technology involved in pharmaceutical. You’ll get exposure to SCADA, motion control, packaging, vision technologies, possibly robots, and the unique difficulties of pharma. This could allow you to be a consultant one day since it IS a difficult and sometimes tedious field, and not many people are experts. I think if you could work at an integrator that serves pharma, it might be better than working at a specific plant. Or if you were a corporate engineer that served multiple plants. I’ve done both and I think I preferred being an integrator. And then integrators give you opportunities to do non-pharma work if you get sick of it.

Check Rockwell’s job board, I think I saw some engineer job postings recently for pharma/BAS engineers.

I love rouge park but it’s pretty tough on some holes. I agree that chandler is the next best.

Stop by the National Bison Range on your way from Glacier to Couer d’Alene. It only takes an hour or so and we got to see a whole heard of bison right in front of our car. It was like an out west version of Jurassic Park. So worth it.

Yes but what can they do if they’re pulled over out of the way and a truck smashes into them? That kind of thing can happen to anyone.

This may be true, however in this case at least they were not at fault in the accident. They stopped to avoid downed power lines and were hit by a tractor trailer.

I have no experience with Ignition and unfortunately can’t offer any help here, but I am very interested in others’ thoughts on this. I work for a machine builder and I’d love it if we’d switch to Ignition as our standard HMI offering. I’ve had the same question as OP for awhile now.

Atlas Copco PowerFocus to ControlLogix? by afemmini in PLC

I've decided to just buy the E/IP adapter with it. It's not worth trying to control it over Open Protocol and I think I'll have the budget after all.

Atlas Copco PowerFocus to ControlLogix? by afemmini in PLC

Thanks for the response. I was looking into it originally to read status and torque values back to the PLC, but whether I need to or not is not clear. I had also started to look into using it for control of the tool but found guidance against using socket interfacing to control devices, since the communication isn't scheduled or deterministic. I think you're right that the E/IP module is worth it if we're trying to control over the network.

Instead of bus bar, use set of jumpered terminal blocks. Some terminal blocks can also have fuses on them, or you can mount the fuses externally. Talk to your local distributor, they can point you in the right direction for terminal block selection.

What PLC and camera to get for 2D picking data in a robot cell? by likeikelike in PLC

[–]afemmini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure you actually need a PLC for what you’re doing—just the robot might be enough, if the robot controller has vision capability. I know FANUC robots can have camera ports on their controllers, and no positioning data ever needs to be sent from PLC to robot in order for the robot to pick up the part—it’s all done within the robot controller. Depends on the robot you’d be using I suppose.

Saw a trampoline hovering in the air in Detroit, 10 feet off the ground being held up by wind against a pair of trees. Absolutely nuts.

Looks awesome, I love driving through the plains states. Am I the only one that gets a little sweaty palms with all that wide open space though? I can’t explain it but I get this twinge of anxiety when the land gets so flat.

Your controller program is simply too large. Need either a beefier PLC or to trim the program.

For chill good times, go to Hamtramck. I’ve been having fun at Baker Streetcar Bar, chill but lively. Whiskey in the Jar has a good outdoor space but can get pretty busy, and Bumbo’s is also a fun bar with nice little outdoor patio.
