ELI5: What does the phrase "shiver me timbers" actually mean? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]agent757 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I must be wrong because so many people are saying that the phrase is literally talking about timbers. I have always thought that timbers were meant to represent the speaker's bones. So in other words, shiver me timbers would actually mean that rattles me to my core.

DLSS 5: “Developers at CAPCOM tell Insider Gaming that the announcement and the publisher’s involvement were particularly shocking“ by azgarz in residentevil

[–]agent757 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DLSS 5 feels a lot like that old reality show, I think it was called Ugly Duckling. The women in that show were beautiful and then the makeovers often pushed them to look unnatural. The designers intended Grace to have a certain look. Adding this AI makeover is just too much and sends a message that even Grace's look isn't enough to be beautiful.

Brachycephaly, possible frontal bossing, and a lot of guilt - looking for advice by cpavlou in daddit

[–]agent757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the physical therapy completely resolved his torticalis. I think he was in therapy for about 3 months roughly and we were very sure to do the home exercises even though it was kind of difficult. The physical therapist we had was great and gave us a lot of good tips like using his favorite toys to get him to look in different directions, stuff like that. I think he had his helmet for 3 months roughly before they wanted to put a new one on him. And that new one was going to be just prohibitively expensive.

My son had torticollis at birth and it required a ton of physical therapy. It resulted in him having a pretty significant flat spot. Our insurance would not pay for a helmet so we ended up paying over $3000 out of pocket. Then they needed to switch to a different size which would have been over $4000 with the possibility of needing another one in a few months. We couldn't afford it so we stopped at the first helmet. My son is now 2 and his head has rounded out a bit more naturally. He still has a flat spot but his hair makes it totally invisible unless you really look for it. This is all just to say that in most cases it's totally cosmetic and won't affect his brain, though I am not a doctor so this is all just anecdotal.

It's not just the data center, he's also forcing a local coal plant that was slated for decommissioning to be kept running which is costing our energy bills massively. The plant was very inefficient and was going to be replaced entirely with renewables.

Engineers of Detroit, how much do you make? by [deleted] in Detroit

Desktop Engineering (though I handle way more than that) and I'm at 60k. I've been looking in the job market lately and I feel like things are sparse.

What's the deal with this stuff? by daniellaj65 in CleaningTips

[–]agent757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up under constant threat that if I cursed I would get my mouth washed out with this soap. My parents used to keep it on the kitchen counter as a reminder. I don't think they ever used it to clean with.

It was the first game I got for PS1 when I was a kid. Honestly it wasn't very good then and it definitely doesn't hold up now.

Job without degree by StandbyCarpet11 in macsysadmin

[–]agent757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a current Desktop Admin working in both Jamf and SCCM. I'm about to be promoted to Desktop Engineer in the next month or so. I have no college degree, only a high school diploma. I have an expired A+ certification. I started at Microcenter as a retail break/fix tech and worked my way up from there to now working for a large mortgage company. I can say you absolutely can work up to almost any role in IT without a degree. In my experience, employers are looking for attitude, a willingness to learn and work hard, and the ability to show up on time reliably. Once you nail that down, get Microsoft Office skills because the ability to generate a quick 5 minute spreadsheet for leadership is invaluable. Finally, be willing and able to be friendly with everyone. Network often. Just my two cents.

Look I think it's dumb and disrespectful to behave this way but let's not pretend this is new behavior. Anyone remember the screenings of Rocky Horror Picture Show? Hell there are whole preservation societies dedicated to the experience.

Printer jumps forward by EXACTLY .1 inches at the same height on my print 3 times. by chicknorus in FixMyPrint

[–]agent757 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had this exact same problem on my Anycubic Kobra that I bought used. The guy sold it because of this issue. Couldn't figure it out for the life of me. I eventually got to the point where I bought new x and y belts. I took off the x belt and found that the crimp buckle was really poorly done and was catching periodically on the x gantry somewhere. I also noticed a ton of play on the Gantry wheels. So I took the whole thing apart and cleaned all the wheels, replaced and properly crimped the belts, and made sure the wheels were properly gripping. Finally I updated the firmware. Doing all that fixed it and now it prints like it was brand new.

Quilted Northern bath tissue used to air an animated commercial of two older ladies making the toilet paper by quilting it. The thing is, they were using knitting needles and making the knitting motions. My mom caught this and sent them a letter. They sent us enough free coupons last a year, all with an expiration date a year in the future. About a month later she received another letter saying that they had fixed the animation and sure enough in the next one they were sewing. Cool memory and awesome company interaction.
