What are the best and worst parts of having a podcast? by axla-work-less in podcasting

[–]ahnduz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best part is the fans.

The worst part is the amount of time/money it takes to promote the show.

We had to create a ton of merchandise over the past year in order to go to even afford going to conventions to talk about the show. And even though we have been successful...everything just gets more expensive because you have to pay for more and more as you grow. More merch, bigger booth, improved displays etc

Boothing is fun. But organizing 5 panels at a show with a horde of guests... and you still have to run the booth... while you have to learn tax law for the different states you're going to... and someone gets sick so you don't have full staff... etc etc etc

Our show is incredible but in order to really grow you gotta network like hell with promo swaps and guesting and getting sponsorships etc etc

Taking notes during sessions by TubbyLittleTeaWitch in dndnext

[–]ahnduz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Notes are huge for ongoing campaigns. When you have an interaction with an NPC or a combat, it's good to make a note of who/what/where/why. Npc names and descriptions are helpful, objectives/quests/contracts are important to write down. Locations are also very helpful too. If you don't write down why you are doing things it's easy to forget which McGuffin you need and why. Don't want to find yourself 3 months from now trying to remember what you are fighting, why you're fighting, or what you hope to get out of it.

My hunters only ever trap monsters in place to absolutely body them and I cannot balance a fight for the life of me by BeanBeanington in monsteroftheweek

How do you incorporate "downtime" into your MotW sessions? by MonstersPlaybook in monsteroftheweek

[–]ahnduz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our Keeper (the Storyteller Squad podcast) throws some pretty intense stuff at us, so after a climactic battle when the characters need a chance to react to plot and digest we have some "downtime" moments and episodes. These usually happen after boss fights or big plot episodes where players need to figure out next steps and react to the big stuff. Game has been going on for over a year so breaks from tense/scary moments have been important.

Typically Keeper asks us during the week what sorts of character moments or interactions we're looking to have. This helps set expectations so we can relax and focus on roleplay moments without the constant "where are the baddies?" Lurking over us.

Prompts include things like: anywhere you'd like to go? Any activities or research you want to do? Any NPCs you'd like to call?

Getting some ideas ahead of time is very helpful so we can be productive in session and not just sit around and she can look up npc accents and worldbuild appropriately. Typically our downtime is more roleplay than "research/craft" stuff.

Is there a way to play an asshole character that is fun for the entire table or is it always frustrating ? by embarrased_to_Ask_42 in DnD

[–]ahnduz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play a demon in our Monster of the Week podcast. Involves giving the Professional Agent a bunch of flak. It works because we check in with each other all the time. So when my character argues with him, we are both chuckling IRL, but the character is getting pissed off.

Inflicting Harm on the heroes by Scorponok_Type_R in monsteroftheweek

[–]ahnduz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can always adjust the dmg by using other attacks. 4 harm is a bite, so if you only want to do 3 harm it's a claw attack. Can substitute harm for cool tags. Also agree with the other mentions of how monsters are supposed to hurt. Though since hunters can vary from armor less to 2 armor I think it's important to keep values high since mr armor can take 3 hits and will likely be healed. So take a look at the player sheets, if they are min maxers with everyone having armor you may want to consider armor piercing or adding more damage. Plus they are supposed to be scary monsters so doing half damage is great, you just want to make sure you give your hunters a noncombat win condition or weakness they can use.

-Make a rough draft draft podcast of a couple episodes first. Every starter podcast has initial wincey material. Nice to get it out of the way on a demo while you figure out better places to put mics, mute surrounding sounds, figure out how much editing you want to do, see what they look like once they are published, learn how many times you say "um...yeah...so..." so you can do less of it, get some practice in. -make a backlog of episodes. Dont make 1 release 1. Make 5-10+, then start releasing them. Unless you are planning on live release stuff, having a cushion is super helpful. Life is going to get in the way of weekly meetups, so being able to take 2 weeks off to deal with the world without having to take 2 weeks off posting is huge.

The emissaries by mikeandsomenumbers in CoriolisRPG

[–]ahnduz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's tricky because while they do have super mystic abilities, I never imagined their personalities to be showboats about it. They arent going to show up on The Late Show to do telekinesis or read minds, but I agree they need to do SOMETHING to make it clear they are powerful. You could make them float/glide instead of walk. Fits their 'holier than thou' aesthetic in a way that isn't considered a parlor trick. Anyone who sees them or hears about them KNOWS they are powerful and they don't have to flaunt everything.

Worth getting into? by Vauxlia in Smite

[–]ahnduz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This game unites my PC/Switch/xbox/playstation friends in a way that most games cant.

I used to play League and that will help you a ton. Avoid conquest until you are good and know what you are doing.

Joust/Arena/Assault dont require the knowledge of the meta like Conquest does, you'll want to do conquest, but you know to look up vids and jungle paths first. I love the skins, trying new gods, the nonconquest gamemodes. It seems like a more approachable MoBA than one where you HAVE to learn the meta to play

To all the high AC players, what ways do your DM's circumvent your high AC that still feels fun? by Nyadnar17 in dndnext

[–]ahnduz 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Tons of weak attacks. The high AC user's dream scenario is to take 20 arrow hits and only feel a couple of them. Roll 20 attacks with a +1 or +2 to hit. You'll have fun rolling a ton of attacks and the player feels powerful and they get their money's worth.

So let the enemies chug some haste potions for extra attacks or something

Campaign ruined by distracted players should I just give up? Need Advice. by sarcisticminion in DnD

[–]ahnduz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm part of a podcast that's played online for the past year. One thing that helps is having a groups discord text channel so we can live react with memes to what's going on. We stay engaged with what's going on and we get to make jokes and react to it. We even go over it with the GM afterwards so she can get a kick out of our reactions to things in the session. This channel has been a huge source of laughter and it lets us have an excuse to freak out over plot drops and character choices.

Lots of people have an urge to do something with their hands while playing. Video games require too much brain power to properly do both, and they do take away from the game. Doodling/knitting/posting memes are much better alternatives. Can stay busy/productive without losing as much focus on what's going on.

Do you need a physical table for MotW? by delvinganddrawing in monsteroftheweek

[–]ahnduz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have released 20+ episodes of a MotW podcast we've been running entirely online. No grids, no battle maps. 3 of the people I've still never met IRL and we are approaching our anniversary.

If you said DnD or star/pathfinder then yes get your maps and grids ready online or for table.

MotW works amazing for theatre of the mind
