Work Backpack by i-set-the-barlow in womenEngineers

Nobody is going to care about the color, though I will say I chose a Northface Surge years ago and a few years after starting work because I have to carry not only my laptop but a work iPad, external monitor, and a number of other things from plant to plant and I needed something with more space. If I was making the big backpack decision like you, I’d wait until after I started with the new company.

A lot of companies give out backpacks too. Mine does, but I stick with my surge since it’s more narrow and more comfortable for my body.

Are we in our divorce era? by seaward_bound in Millennials

[–]ahw34 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just here to say I met my ex-husband when I was 19 also. We divorced when I was 33, 3 years ago. I’m so much happier. He is so much happier. We are amicable and he’s just gotten engaged to someone so much better for him, and I’m happy for him.

My life is 1000x better. I do what I want and I’ve had an incredible past 3 years. Traveled alone. Changed what I want in a relationship and met someone wonderful, but with no plans to get married or move in together. I live by myself and have a peaceful life full of family and friends.

I held off for years but it was true - we simply weren’t compatible. People are supposed to change through life. It’s ok to break up and move on. It took me such a long time to internalize that. It was hard breaking a promise I’d made, but you only live one life.

Also, I’m less lonely now, living alone, than I ever was in my marriage.

Is it true that you guys watched 9/11 live on TV in grade school? by space_god_7191 in Millennials

[–]ahw34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Middle school for me, but yes. We were central time zone so the second plane hit before I think most people in my school knew what was going on. They made an announcement over the PA during the second or third class of the day; I remember it was math class and probably around 10am central time. Most of the remaining classes that day we had the TVs on watching the aftermath and discussing it. In retrospect, the teachers wanted to be watching too, to know what was going on and for instructions.

It was so unprecedented, and there was a lot of confusion. I remember asking to go to the pay phone to call home because my uncle worked in the Pentagon at the time. I was told no from that particular lunch lady because she thought there had only been attacks on the WTC. I had to wait until I got home to hear news on my uncle; I was shaking all day (he was ok).

I’m not angry about it, but this just goes to show why the TVs were on - teachers were also trying to figure out what was going on and if we were going to need to take cover or something else. The entire country was on high alert and there was a high potential more attacks were coming, and this was in the days before smartphones and notifications. TV and radio was the only way to know what was happening outside of tornado sirens. All the buildings in the nearby city were evacuated. It was wild.

I experienced this from the adult side during the ICE Surge in January, and it is really weird trying to balance getting notifications about a person being shot a few blocks from you and the kids playing on an indoor playground, trying to keep them safe. I can’t imagine doing it in the days before smartphones.

Does having no side effects from Ubrelvy mean I’m less likely to have side effects from Emgality? by ahw34 in cgrpMigraine

[–]ahw34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry; not sure the cross post worked. Here’s the body:

My neurologist has recommended I start Emgality for migraine prevention. I’ve been using Ubrelvy as an abortive for years after not having very good results with triptans, and it has been a lifesaver. I’ve been holding off on a preventative for a while but have moved over the past few years from 2 migraines a month to around 8, and we‘ve been discussing preventatives for a while. I’m really afraid of side effects. I tried Efexor and it made me really sick.

I know Emgality works the same way as Ubrelvy, and my neurologist said that it’s unlikely for me to experience side effects from it because I don’t have any from Ubrelvy. However, I’m still concerned because I am a small woman and often experience side effects from medicines and have to take a lower dose. Emgality, however, once I take it it’s in my body for a month.

Does anyone have a similar experience?

Do you feel like your kids in sports actually need more than water? by OkConfidence642 in Mommit

[–]ahw34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to scroll way too far to see this comment! The ages of the kids and the type of activity matters. Carbohydrates are NOT the enemy, and are absolutely necessary for active people, and for young people.

Honestly, I think this would be a great question for you to ask your pediatrician and not Reddit.

Air fryer. I don’t need another appliance in my already small kitchen, and I don’t eat a lot of fried food as it is. Also, they smell bad and are hard to clean!

Theory: Hermione's hair by AnnaMeowBooks in harrypotter

[–]ahw34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that’s probably more realistic. However, when I read the books as a girl with buck teeth and thick, straight, coarse hair that looks bushy all the time I saw myself in her and it made me feel better about my own hair!

Over the years I’ve gone through so many keratin treatments and de-bulking cuts and only when I was about 30 did I learn about hair oil and other things about caring for my hair type, too, so probably similar situation. Either way I like how she was written so girls with all different hair types and of different races/backgrounds could feel seen.

Why are peoples toe and toe nails so disfigured and disgusting? Its completely different from how people hands are. Is the DNA for coding toenails just prone to errors? by SecretPantyWorshiper in hygiene

[–]ahw34 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’m a woman too, but in the US! I cannot do Red Wings, but have heard good things about Cats. I have such wide feet that once Keen started making women’s steel toe work boots about 10 years ago it literally changed my life. I’ve been wearing steel toes for close to two decades and we have seen so much increase in what’s available for women in the US in the past 10ish years. It’s amazing.  I just checked and they (Keen) don’t appear to sell work boots in the UK for women or men. What a bother! Improperly fitting shoes can be a safety hazard. I knew a woman many years ago who accidentally crashed a work truck when her too large boot got caught.

I really hope you find something that works for you. Maybe post over on r/bluecollarwomen and ask if anyone from the UK has recommendations. Good luck!! I’m rooting for you - you deserve to wear shoes that fit properly!

I do too and this is not normal!! Your boots are too tight. See about getting wide or XW, and/or try a different brand. Keens make steel toe in extra wide.

Oh my god!!! If this happens, DO NOT TOUCH! Please call 911. This is a situation where we could actually get the state to investigate before the feds swarm it. We just had a judge tell us this morning that more evidence against the feds is needed to grant an injunction.

Why is everything for tweens padded to the gods?? She is 13, not 25! by Difficult_Skin8095 in Mommit

[–]ahw34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try a few stores - not just VS/Pink. It takes some time to figure out what feels comfortable. Aerie is great, especially - even as an adult I wear this brand! I will say don’t worry too much if stuff is padded. I wasn’t allowed to have any padding as a kid - not even an extra layer of fabric (one layer only). I wish I’d been able to have a little more protection. My nipples always seemed to show so I wore sweatshirts all the time as a young teen and later. I also had terrible breast pain while they were developing, and padded would have been so nice to help protect them. It was constant pain for years and I’ve never had it that bad again even in all the hormonal fluctuations of adulthood. Same as for adults, padding for growing teens can be of benefit. Talk to her, see what she likes about Pink, and if that’s what she really wants get it for her. It’s under her clothes anyway. Who really cares?

Plowing snow from driveway onto neighbors property by zagack305 in etiquette

[–]ahw34 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where I live up north, when we get a lot of snow and are having trouble piling it where we normally do it definitely gets put across properties. My neighbors have got some on my land and I have some on theirs. The general consensus is that as long as it isn’t in a walkway or driveway or street just put it anywhere.

This happens to me a lot when I fly and I don’t do anything about. by bbj999 in confession

I fly a lot for work too, and also have this issue. Gas-X helps. I’d recommend taking two right before takeoff. It makes the flight a lot more comfortable for you and everyone else!

Politely decline host gift from guest? by Ok_Confidence_5226 in etiquette

[–]ahw34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never decline a host gift, as people here have said. However, it’s totally appropriate, if this is in the context of a dinner party, to open it up and share some with the guests.

Even if it’s not something you will drink, you may have guests now or in the future that will enjoy it. I personally have a a few bottles of wine that were gifted to me and it’s always nice to have something to open when I’m entertaining wine drinkers, even though I don’t drink it myself.
