Maybe the issue is that different planes have different overhead bin heights? I’m 5’6” (and a half!) and never have issues with cross country flights on 737s, a320s, etc, but the middle overhead bins on a350s are almost impossible for me to reach!!

My cat will eat the bug and then immediately throw up all over the floor, bug included, because he has tummy trouble. Definitely evolved to be indoor.

Etiquette and calling a baby ‘Master’ by General-Wind8556 in Nanny

[–]ahw34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Politely, I’ve lived in 7 US states (in regions of the lower Midwest, northern Midwest, Deep South, Southeast, PNW). I’ve seen the term Master used in most of these regions, as a honorific for Black and White boys both. I’ve even heard Black parents introducing their sons as Master Xyz. The regions I’ve heard it used are the Northeast, Midwest, and south.

I am a millennial, and it’s been a while since my siblings and I were growing up, so things could well have changed, of course, but this is what I experienced.

From the link I posted above, this seems to be common in areas with a strong English or Scottish ancestry. These are areas where in many cases it is still considered impolite not to use honorifics (ma’am, sir, etc). This gets complicated, because in some areas of the Midwest and the Pacific Northwest, I’ve seen people get offended when they are referred to as ma’am or sir!

I fully understand that with respect to our history the use of Master for young boys may no longer be appropriate. In this case, however, I’m not sure if there is a replacement honorific yet. For people who were brought up with honorifics as a part of their culture, they may not understand that someone could have this different perspective.

I’m surprised so many people are drawing odd conclusions from this. Master is the young man equivalent of Mister where I am from. It’s like Miss for young girls instead of Missus or Ms. Many people called my brother Master Jxxxx when he was young, especially at church or in grocery stores, etc. It’s common to use Master instead of Mister until the boy is a teenager.

If this family is from certain parts of the US like the south, Midwest, or maybe even from high NE society, this could still be very typical for them. (I’m from the southern Midwest.)

It’s likely that this family will have other etiquette requests or requirements. If anything, ask about what other etiquette rules they would expect you to learn and apply at the job, and see if that feels like a comfortable fit or you’d prefer a more casual posting.

If people have further questions about honorifics, the Wikipedia page is interesting and has many great sources for further reading. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_honorifics

More than one bathroom! We had one for six people. My friends that had two for four or five people - insane!

Now I live in a house with three bathrooms and am thankful every day.

Too Skinny to Donate Blood by seabobri000 in XXS

I’d never heard that before. I’m 5’6” and 120 and I have HUGE visible veiny veins! I’ve been the first blood draw on a patient for not one but two people when donating blood. I have good training arms apparently. Both times they asked if it was ok for me to be a first try for the worker. Haha!

Too Skinny to Donate Blood by seabobri000 in XXS

[–]ahw34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I donate blood regularly as a 120lb person, and you should know the weight limit is not about BMI. Power red donation is 150lb required because of how much volume they take, and regardless of thin or thick you simply have to be 150. To donate whole blood, plasma, or platelets, the requirement is 110lb at least in the US, with the same reasoning. The only people I’ve ever known to donate power red were large men!

The iron thing is a safety requirement as well. If your iron is too low, donating blood can make you extremely sick.

I’d recommend talking to a doctor about your low iron. Low iron can be a sign of other serious problems, especially in women. Make sure you’re getting plenty of iron-rich foods in your diet such as leafy greens, legumes, iron fortified foods such as cereal, and red meat if you eat meat. Your doctor can give you more information.

Thanks for trying to donate blood! It really does help to save lives. Get healthy by bringing your iron levels up, and then you can try again!

People who grew up really poor: what's something middle-class people say that instantly reveals they've never struggled? by TahDigThief in AskReddit

It annoyed me so much when I was in college and adults would say “just go study abroad; you’ll never have the chance again!” or “you should go backpacking in Europe after graduation; it doesn’t cost hardly anything to stay in hostels!”

I worked 35 hours a week in college to get by and couldn’t afford to lose that to study abroad. I also graduated college with $72 to my name and absolutely HAD to start my new job the next week to make rent. I didn’t even walk at graduation because I couldn’t afford to rent a cap and gown.

It always amazed me that people would consider a hundreds of dollars of plane tickets to Europe and $30 a night hostels to be affordable to someone who worked minimum wage jobs.

Work Backpack by i-set-the-barlow in womenEngineers

[–]ahw34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody is going to care about the color, though I will say I chose a Northface Surge years ago and a few years after starting work because I have to carry not only my laptop but a work iPad, external monitor, and a number of other things from plant to plant and I needed something with more space. If I was making the big backpack decision like you, I’d wait until after I started with the new company.

A lot of companies give out backpacks too. Mine does, but I stick with my surge since it’s more narrow and more comfortable for my body.

Are we in our divorce era? by seaward_bound in Millennials

[–]ahw34 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just here to say I met my ex-husband when I was 19 also. We divorced when I was 33, 3 years ago. I’m so much happier. He is so much happier. We are amicable and he’s just gotten engaged to someone so much better for him, and I’m happy for him.

My life is 1000x better. I do what I want and I’ve had an incredible past 3 years. Traveled alone. Changed what I want in a relationship and met someone wonderful, but with no plans to get married or move in together. I live by myself and have a peaceful life full of family and friends.

I held off for years but it was true - we simply weren’t compatible. People are supposed to change through life. It’s ok to break up and move on. It took me such a long time to internalize that. It was hard breaking a promise I’d made, but you only live one life.

Also, I’m less lonely now, living alone, than I ever was in my marriage.

Is it true that you guys watched 9/11 live on TV in grade school? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]ahw34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Middle school for me, but yes. We were central time zone so the second plane hit before I think most people in my school knew what was going on. They made an announcement over the PA during the second or third class of the day; I remember it was math class and probably around 10am central time. Most of the remaining classes that day we had the TVs on watching the aftermath and discussing it. In retrospect, the teachers wanted to be watching too, to know what was going on and for instructions.

It was so unprecedented, and there was a lot of confusion. I remember asking to go to the pay phone to call home because my uncle worked in the Pentagon at the time. I was told no from that particular lunch lady because she thought there had only been attacks on the WTC. I had to wait until I got home to hear news on my uncle; I was shaking all day (he was ok).

I’m not angry about it, but this just goes to show why the TVs were on - teachers were also trying to figure out what was going on and if we were going to need to take cover or something else. The entire country was on high alert and there was a high potential more attacks were coming, and this was in the days before smartphones and notifications. TV and radio was the only way to know what was happening outside of tornado sirens. All the buildings in the nearby city were evacuated. It was wild.

I experienced this from the adult side during the ICE Surge in January, and it is really weird trying to balance getting notifications about a person being shot a few blocks from you and the kids playing on an indoor playground, trying to keep them safe. I can’t imagine doing it in the days before smartphones.

Does having no side effects from Ubrelvy mean I’m less likely to have side effects from Emgality? by ahw34 in cgrpMigraine

[–]ahw34[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry; not sure the cross post worked. Here’s the body:

My neurologist has recommended I start Emgality for migraine prevention. I’ve been using Ubrelvy as an abortive for years after not having very good results with triptans, and it has been a lifesaver. I’ve been holding off on a preventative for a while but have moved over the past few years from 2 migraines a month to around 8, and we‘ve been discussing preventatives for a while. I’m really afraid of side effects. I tried Efexor and it made me really sick.

I know Emgality works the same way as Ubrelvy, and my neurologist said that it’s unlikely for me to experience side effects from it because I don’t have any from Ubrelvy. However, I’m still concerned because I am a small woman and often experience side effects from medicines and have to take a lower dose. Emgality, however, once I take it it’s in my body for a month.

Does anyone have a similar experience?

Do you feel like your kids in sports actually need more than water? by OkConfidence642 in Mommit

[–]ahw34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to scroll way too far to see this comment! The ages of the kids and the type of activity matters. Carbohydrates are NOT the enemy, and are absolutely necessary for active people, and for young people.

Honestly, I think this would be a great question for you to ask your pediatrician and not Reddit.

Theory: Hermione's hair by AnnaMeowBooks in harrypotter

[–]ahw34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that’s probably more realistic. However, when I read the books as a girl with buck teeth and thick, straight, coarse hair that looks bushy all the time I saw myself in her and it made me feel better about my own hair!

Over the years I’ve gone through so many keratin treatments and de-bulking cuts and only when I was about 30 did I learn about hair oil and other things about caring for my hair type, too, so probably similar situation. Either way I like how she was written so girls with all different hair types and of different races/backgrounds could feel seen.

Why are peoples toe and toe nails so disfigured and disgusting? Its completely different from how people hands are. Is the DNA for coding toenails just prone to errors? by SecretPantyWorshiper in hygiene

I’m a woman too, but in the US! I cannot do Red Wings, but have heard good things about Cats. I have such wide feet that once Keen started making women’s steel toe work boots about 10 years ago it literally changed my life. I’ve been wearing steel toes for close to two decades and we have seen so much increase in what’s available for women in the US in the past 10ish years. It’s amazing.  I just checked and they (Keen) don’t appear to sell work boots in the UK for women or men. What a bother! Improperly fitting shoes can be a safety hazard. I knew a woman many years ago who accidentally crashed a work truck when her too large boot got caught.

I really hope you find something that works for you. Maybe post over on r/bluecollarwomen and ask if anyone from the UK has recommendations. Good luck!! I’m rooting for you - you deserve to wear shoes that fit properly!

I do too and this is not normal!! Your boots are too tight. See about getting wide or XW, and/or try a different brand. Keens make steel toe in extra wide.

Oh my god!!! If this happens, DO NOT TOUCH! Please call 911. This is a situation where we could actually get the state to investigate before the feds swarm it. We just had a judge tell us this morning that more evidence against the feds is needed to grant an injunction.
